http://www.nationalarchives.ie/wh/
The major work of the Women’s History Project is to survey and list sources relevant to the history of women in Ireland. Two major databases have been created from work undertaken between October 1997 and August 2001, and both are available here for online searching. The Directory of Sources for the History of Women in Ireland contains information on collections relating to the history of women in Ireland from the earliest times to the present, gathered from public and private repositories in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. The Directory covers over 14,000 collections and sources and contains over 100,000 pieces of information from 262 repositories. Women in 20th-Century Ireland: Sources from the Department of the Taoiseach, 1922-1966 , is the result of a survey that involved examining the files of the Department of the Taoiseach between the years 1922 and 1966. Just under 2,000 boxes of files were examined. Every page within each file was perused to ascertain whether it contained any reference to women. This database contains just under 20,000 entries. Much remains to be done before we achieve an accurate picture of the place of women in Irish history. Our hope is that these databases will assist researchers to contribute to an understanding of that history.

ERASMUS SMITH 1611-1691
Born in Leicestershire, Smith joined the Grocers' Company and traded with Turkey. By 1650 he was an army contractor, supplying oatmeal, wheat and cheese. He profited from Cromwell's campaign in Ireland, being granted 666 acres in Tipperary. He gradually expanded his holding to cover more than 46,000 acres in nine counties, but it was not all valuable. He lived in london and Essex. Worth £120,000, Smith funded at least three grammar schools and more than 40 elementary schools in Ireland. He also founded four chairs in Trinity College:
  • Erasmus Smith's Chair of Natural and Experimental Philosophy (1724) Erasmus Smith's Chair of Hebrew (1724) Erasmus Smith's Chair of Modern History (1762) Erasmus Smith's Chair of Mathematics (1762)

THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND
The UK and Ireland are regarded, for the purposes of this Genealogical Information Service, as being made up of England Ireland (i.e. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland Wales , and Scotland , together with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man . Together, these constitute the British Isles - which is a geographical term for a group of islands lying off the north-west coast of mainland Europe. (Legally, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are largely self governing, and are not part of the United Kingdom.) The Administrative Regions into which the UK and Ireland are divided have changed frequently in recent years. However, in line with normal genealogical practice, this Information Service is structured according to the counties as shown in these maps of England, Scotland and Wales , and of Ireland , i.e., as they were prior to the re-organisation that took place in 1974 (1975 for Scotland).

The Irish landscape has a mythic resonance, due as much to the country's almost tangible history as its claim to being the home of the fairies and the 'little people'. Sure, the weather may not always be clement, but the dampness ensures there are fifty shades of green to compensate - just one of the reasons Ireland is called the Emerald Isle. Full country name:
