    Saint-Etienne Museum reopens

The town of Saint-Etienne in south-east France is rightly proud of its newly renovated Museum of Art and Industry that contains 260 bicycles, 300 bicycle posters and 1.5 million ribbons. The first French bicycle was invented here in 1886, ribbons have been produced in the town since the 15th century, and arms and armour since the 16th. The museum has been closed for two years for renovations and modernisation. The renovation of the museum was overseen by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, at a cost of more than FFr69 million (£6.5 million; $9.4 million). Guggenheim goes to Brazil Foundation President, Thomas Krens, has negotiated a deal with the City of Rio de Janeiro that will see the construction of a $150 million underwater Guggenheim museum by Jean Nouvel. The arrangement will earn the New York organisation $25 million By Jason Edward Kaufman and Victoria Verlichak
NEW YORK. Rio de Janeiro will be the site of a new branch of the Guggenheim Museum. After months of negotiations, the agreement will be signed in New York by Mayor Cesar Maia and Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation president Thomas Krens. The date of the signing has not been announced, but Rio de Janeiro’s Secretary of Culture Ricardo Macieira said in a telephone interview earlier this week that the ceremony will take place “around 20 March.” A spokesperson for the Guggenheim in New York could not confirm this.

    Introduction to Islam
    ...
    Quran, News, Songs, Stories
Belief in one God , Allah in Arabic, constitutes the very foundation of Islam. There is no deity except Allah. He is indivisible and absolutely transcendent. God is the Almighty, the Creator and the Sustainer of the universe, Who is similar to nothing and nothing is comparable to Him. The Holy Quran (also written as Koran ) is the Divine Book revealed to Muhammad (peace be on him). Muslims believe that the Holy Quran is one-hundred percent word of God, sent as a guidance for those who believe in God. Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah, present-day Saudi Arabia in 570 C.E. He is the model for humanity of all walks of life to follow until the Last Hour. God sent him as a mercy for the worlds. Prophet Muhammad ( an Arab and a descendant of Abraham) received divine revelations (The Holy Quran) over a period of 23 years in the seventh century of the Christian Era. Muslims believe that he is the last Messenger sent by God for the guidance of mankind until the Day of Judgment.

After the split, the West Roman Empire fell in AD 476, but the East Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine Empire, lasted another one thousand years. It influenced the development of much of Eastern Europe and became a repository of all of the Classical learning, keeping it safe until Medieval Europe was ready for the Renaissance. During the seventh century, the religion of Islam arose in the Middle East and within a hundred years, its followers had built an empire larger than the Roman Empire at its height. The Islamic civilization drew on the rich heritage of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian and Indian cultures. Back to Top

A good quality compass is recommended. Use any straight-edge. If a ruler is used, please point out that it is being used only as a tool to make a straight line; that measuring with numbers has no relevance in this type of geometric construction.
    Classroom Exercise:
Construction of an Islamic Pattern, part A. By following steps 1 - 6, the student will have the experience of constructing the star-hexagon pattern, a popular Islamic all-over pattern.
Construction of an Islamic Pattern, part B. Steps 7 - 9 show how a triangle grid becomes a hexagonal grid.
As students learn about the art produced by people of an unfamiliar society, they discover that it tells them many things about what these people did, knew, and believed. Examining the geometric patterns that characterize so much of Islamic art can provide students with important insights into the technology, scientific knowledge, and religious beliefs of Moslems. At first, an American child may question the value of studying art to understand a distant culture, but connections soon become apparent. Appreciation for a basic relationship between the art and the religion of Islam increases with familiarity. Careful observation of the illustrations here will provide an introduction to Islamic religious beliefs through its art.

Moorish architecture in Spain and Islamic architecture in the Middle East offer excellent examples of tessellations or tilings. Because of the strict injunctions against such depictions of humans or animals which might result in idol-worship, Islamic art developed a unique character, utilizing a number of primary forms: geometric, arabesque, floral, and calligraphic, which are often interwoven. From early times, Muslim art has reflected this balanced, harmonious world-view. - Elisabeth Siddiqui, Islamic Art

    http://mathforum.org/geometry/rugs/carpets/patterns.html
    Patterns in Islamic Art
THE BEAUTY OF ORIENTAL CARPETS can be approached not only in terms of art and mathematics, but also within the contexts of Islamic art and spirituality. Historically, throughout the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia, patterns appear in architecture and interiors to organize space and to beautify the built environment. All patterns reflect the pure beauty of numbers, considered to be of divine origin in Islamic doctrine. And by their very nature, patterns exhibit multiplicity as expressions of unity, which is an attribute of God. Patterns in Oriental carpets may thus be seen as expressive of a world view in which multiplicity exists in relation to the unity of all existence. The Transformation of Islamic Art during the Sunni Revival
    Yasser Tabbaa

The transformation of Islamic architecture and ornament during the eleventh and twelfth centuries signaled profound cultural changes in the Islamic world. Yasser Tabbaa explores with exemplary lucidity the geometric techniques that facilitated this transformation, and investigates the cultural processes by which meaning was produced within the new forms. Iran, Iraq, and Syria saw the development of proportional calligraphy, vegetal and geometric arabesque, muqarnas (stalactite) vaulting, and other devices that became defining features of medieval Islamic architecture. Ultimately, the forms and themes described in this book shaped the development of Mamluk architecture in Egypt and Syria, and by extension, the entire course of North African and Andalusian architecture as well.
These innovations developed and were disseminated in a highly charged atmosphere of confrontation between the Seljuk and post-Seljuk proponents of the traditionalist Sunni revival and their main opponents in Fatimid Egypt. These forms stood as visual signs of allegiance to the orthodox Abbasid caliphate and of difference from the heterodox Fatimids. Tabbaa proposes that their rapid spread throughout the Islamic world operated within a system of reciprocating, ceremonial gestures, which conveyed a new and formal language that helped negotiate the gap between the myth of a unified Sunni Islam and its actual political fragmentation.
