Italy
Culture
Dubbed the world's 'living art gallery,' Italy has more culture than you can shake a baton, paintbrush, quill or chisel at. Whether it's a broken pillar rising up through the linoleum floor of a train station or a baroque church overlooking a cracked antique pediment in the Forum, history and culture surround you. Outside there are Etruscan tombs, Greek temples, cat-infested Roman ruins, Moorish architecture and statue-filled baroque fountains to gawp at; inside, you can swoon to Roman sculptures, Byzantine mosaics, beatific Madonnas from Giotto to Titian, gargantuan baroque tombs and trompe l'oeil ceilings. Writers from Virgil, Ovid, Horace, Livy and Cicero to Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Ficino, Mirandola and Vasari all sprang from Italian loins. The Italians were no slouches when it came to music, either, as they invented both the piano and our system of musical notation, as well as producing Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Verdi, Puccini, Bellini and Rossini. Cinema would not be the same without Italy's Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Magnani, Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren and directors Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini, Frederico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Bernardo Bertolucci. Modern literary Italian appeared in the 13th and 14th centuries, developing out of its Latin heritage, the country's many dialects and the works of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio, who wrote chiefly in the Florentine dialect. Though over 80% of the population profess to be Catholic, the number of people who actually practise the religion is surprisingly low: an average of only 25% attend Mass regularly. However, saints' days, first communions and religious festivals never fail to attract large crowds.

Italians are warm, welcoming people who enjoy sharing the pleasures of life with others: a comforting meal, an inspiring sunset, and yes...a clever joke.
Can you experience Italy without sharing a laugh, breaking bread or taking in the last rays of the day's light with an Italian friend? Yes, but how much better to learn about Italian culture, traditions and history while building bridges of mutual understanding! "Una giornata senza riso è una giornata sprecata." is a common proverb: "A day without laughter is a wasted day." Whether in a classroom or strolling streetside, the Italian people express an authenticity and passion unmatched the world over. As a volunteer, you can extend understanding between cultures while enjoying all that the unique culture and people of southern Italy has to offer.

8. Italy: Culture Shock
Spring Summer in Florence, Italy. Culture Shock PreviousTopic (Money Matters). Next Topic (Health Safety) .
http://www.cccd.edu/studyabroad/italy/culture.htm
Culture Shock Previous Topic (Money Matters) Next Topic Topics GENERAL INFORMATION: People usually experience a variety of emotions when adapting to a foreign culture, ranging from excitement and interest in the new culture to depression and fear of the unknown. The difficulties and emotional insecurities that you experience can be a direct result of what is termed "culture shock"an often painful feeling of being "out of synch" with how people in a different cultural environment carry out their everyday lives. There are five fairly distinct phases to culture shock, each experienced in turn for various amounts of time, depending on your general adaptability, amount of experience away from home and other individual factors.
  • Initial excitement: After months of planning, you are finally here! Everything is new and different and you are high on the experience. This phase begins with your arrival in the new country and ends when the excitement wears off.
  • Disorientation: This happens in different ways but is the "out of synch" experience referred to above where you just can't seem to get a handle on what is going on. It may be the longest of the phases if this is your first experience abroad.

Cultural Diversity The Italians love their cars. As the slogan in a recent advert goes in the UK: "no one in Italy grows up wanting to be an engine driver". Rome, the Eternal City, has 25 centuries of history crowded into its maze of alleys, squares and catacombs. Preparations for the Holy Year of Jubilee 2000 are under way; the Trevi Fountain now gleams as white as a full moon, and the Spanish Steps will be completely refinished. The observance of Holy Year traditionally begins when the pope, using a golden hammer, strikes three blows to open the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. (Twelve months later, the door is again walled up.) Life bustles and flows around Rome's shrines to civilization. See its beauty from atop the Capitoline Hill, watch the world go by in the Piazza Navona and marvel at the ornate Fountain of the Four Rivers. The Borghese Museum and Gallery has reopened after 14 years of restoration. Also open again is the Palazzo Altemps, a Renaissance villa that houses an important collection of Greek and Roman sculpture. A popular excursion is the 20-mile journey to Tivoli to see the lavish gardens and grand fountains of Villa d'Este.

The best venue for contemporary dance is Teatro Fondamenta Nuove, Cannaregio 5313, Fondamenta Nuove (tel: (041) 522 498; fax: (041) 523 1988), an old joiner’s shop with a good line in avant-garde performances. The Accademia, Calle Gambera, Dorsoduro (tel: (041) 528 7706), is one of Venice’s oldest and best-loved cinemas, with a good range of flicks from American blockbusters and European independents to arthouse (especially on Wednesday and Thursday). More recently, however, it has been overtaken in the popularity stakes by the brand-new Giorgione Movie D’Essai, Cannaregio 4612, Rio Tera de Franceschi – a two-screen miniplex holding over 300 seats and showing films in the English language every Thursday. Bologna : Hotels Overview Transports Sightseeing ... Cost of Living Bologna Culture Bologna has strong musical links, earning the epithet ‘Italians, salute! Musical Bologna is passing!’ Mozart and Rossini both studied in the city and the former was just 14 when he became a member of the city’s Accademia Filarmonica, one of Europe’s leading musical academies, founded in 1666. Rossini, who hailed from nearby Pesaro, made his operatic debut here in 1814 with Tancredi and The Italian Girl in Algiers. Both works received a cool reception, in marked contrast to the Italian premiere of Wagner’s Lohengrin, which delighted the Bolognese audience and ran for a record 18 performances. The rapturous plaudits stunned even the egocentric Wagner, who declared such success was only possible in a city whose motto was Libertas (Freedom). Wagner was later made an honorary citizen of Bologna, adding further lustre to the city’s musical reputation. Today, the musical tradition continues to flourish. Regular concert cycles are performed, ad hoc, in the Sale Mozart at the Accademia Filarmonica and in various churches around the city. Posters are pinned up outside the venue and tickets can be bought at the door. Bologna holds her own on the popular music front as well – national and international rock stars frequently perform in the football stadium outside the city. Tickets can be bought at record shops around the city. Monthly cultural listings are available from Bologna Online (website: www.televisual.it/bolognaonline).

It is the irony of ironies. Rome and Florence are very high on the travel lists of so many GLBT folk. Gays and lesbians love to visit these major Italian cities. Our travel agency sends lots of gay and lesbian couples on romantic flings to Florence, Rome, and numerous other Italian destinations that bespeak of "amore." And lots of single gays and lesbians like to go, too.
LEFT: Michelangelo's David. ABOVE: Florence. But until relatively recently, neither Rome nor Florence have had a particularly high-profile GLBT community. There is still much less than one might expect when it comes to organized gay life. Nothing in Florence or Rome compares with the plethora of bars, coffeehouses, and other meeting places...or GLBT organizational structure...one finds in Berlin, Munich, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Madrid or Barcelona. Often in the Mediterranean cultures, the GLBT presence is subsumed in the larger fabric of religious mores, family, and the like. But should gays and lesbians feel any hesitation about going to Italy? None, whatsoever! Roman Outing Gays and lesbians are becoming more out and open in Rome. The city was the site of the First World Pride in the year 2000, coinciding with the Roman Catholic Jubilee. World Pride underscored Rome's reputation for tolerance and La Dolce Vita...the sweet life.
