Country Info Italy Introduction Italy General Data Italy Maps Italy Culture ... Italy Time and Date Italy Government Back to Top Italy has been a democratic republic since June 2, 1946, when the monarchy was abolished by popular referendum. By the terms of the constitution that became effective on January 1, 1948, the reestablishment of the Fascist Party is prohibited; direct male heirs of the house of Savoy (see Savoy, House of) are ineligible to vote or hold any public office and are, in fact, banished from Italian soil; and recognition is no longer accorded to titles of nobility, although titles in existence prior to October 28, 1922, may be used as part of the bearer’s name. Although Italy’s tumultuous politics have produced more than 50 different governments since the advent of the democratic system, order is maintained through a well-established bureaucracy that supports the elected offices.

GOVERNMENT
Italy has been a democratic republic since June 2, 1946, when the monarchy was abolished by popular referendum. The constitution was promulgated on January 1, 1948.
The Italian state is centralized. The prefect of each of the provinces is appointed by and answerable to the central government. In addition to the provinces, the constitution provides for 20 regions with limited governing powers. Five regionsSardinia, Sicily, Trentino-Alto Adige, Valle d'Aosta, and Friuli-Venezia Giuliafunction with special autonomy statutes. The other 15 regions were established in 1970 and vote for regional 'councils.' The establishment of regional governments throughout Italy has brought some decentralization to the national governmental machinery, and recent governments have devolved further powers to the regions. However, many regional governments, particularly in the north of Italy, are seeking additional powers.
The 1948 constitution established a bicameral parliament (Chamber of Deputies and Senate), a separate judiciary, and an executive branch composed of a Council of Ministers (cabinet), headed by the president of the council (prime minister). The president of the republic is elected for 7 years by the parliament sitting jointly with a small number of regional delegates. The president nominates the prime minister, who chooses the other ministers. The Council of Ministersin practice composed mostly of members of parliamentmust retain the confidence of both houses.

Italian government could fall on Albanian aid vote
Communists in parliament
won't support Premier Prodi
April 9, 1997
Web posted at: 8:33 a.m. EDT (1233 GMT) In this story: ROME (CNN) Italian Premier Romano Prodi told parliament Wednesday that if his Communist allies in parliament do not support Italy's military mission to Albania , he would let the president decide the government's fate. A vote in the Chamber of Deputies the lower house of parliament was scheduled for later in the day. Earlier Wednesday, the Communist Refoundation party confirmed it would vote against the deployment. Prodi did not offer his to step down, as the opposition has demanded, but one outcome of a meeting with President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro could be his resignation. The Communist Refoundation party has repeatedly refused to back the force, which is designed to protect aid to the chaos-wracked country. Prodi needs the party's votes to have a majority in the Chamber of Deputies.
Communists won't budge
Prodi said he would meet with Scalfaro if "the dissent of Communist Refoundation remains." After the speech, a leader of the party, Armando Cossutta, said the Communists would not budge.
