Inside Calabria
History of Calabria If you're making polite conversation at a cocktail party and the small talk moves abruptly to Calabrian history , you may find yourself unwittingly exposed. But have no fear, this rough guide will stand up to all but the best analysis. Firstly, Calabria did not exist when the Greeks first got there. The territory was called Brutium after an ancient Italic tribe who occupied the land and no doubt lived up to their tough name. Prior to that it was known as Enotria after another tribe. The name Calabria comes from the Hebrew 'kaleb' meaning land of resin or woods. This saw a further corruption into Kalòs-Bruo meaning 'fertile land' which was adopted in the Byzantine era of the 7th century.

Paestum The marauding Greeks were not the first to realise the potential of the vast plain overlooking the Gulf of Salerno They were, however, the first to establish a colony of any size. It was in the 7th century BC and they called it Poseidonia They soon built a flourishing town and it became a marvel across the Greek world thanks to the various sanctuaries, temples and the magnificent Doric structures still visible today.

In 1962 SALCA s.r.l. differentiated its production introducing in the catalogue pieces of English style. The positive answer of the foreign markets and good economic results led to an ever increasing specialization in the manifacture of 18th-19th Century English Period Furniture. At this stage, the number of employees stabilized around seventy. In the late 70s there was a clear inversion of trend: the export diminished whereas the demands of the Italian market were constantly growing. The plant was renewed and the staff members were brought to 101. After an initial really positive period, the firm went through a serious crisis culminated in 1986 with the shut-down of SALCA S.p.A. and the consequent establishement of SALCA-ASIAGO S.C. a R.L. The activity continued with the production of furniture; in the meantime the building of a new plant was planned. Its construction took from 1991 to 1995. This brought the covered area of the firm to 4000 square metres. During the last ten years SALCA has experienced a constant economic development which has also determinated the production of an increasingly wider range of products.

The Molino di Fondo used to be the grain mill that supplied the people of Ameno with flour. It was in operation until after the Second World War, when people started to move to cities. Many beautiful houses and homesteads in Piemonte were abandoned at this time. The fields and the terraces on the hillsides started to grow up in woods again. The Molino had been uninhabited for 30 years when Janet Perry bought it in 1975. She was struck by the beauty and the magic of the old mill turning itself slowly into a ruin. Her dream was to revive and renovate the exquisite buildings, and its romantic setting. She had to wait till 1988 when she met Nistal, architect and builder, who joined her in Europe and started the renovations. Janet is an opera singer, and Nistal traveled with her wherever she was singing. Between engagements, as a labor of love, he rebuilt the Molino mostly with his own hands. Over a ten-year period the old ruin transformed itself into Janet's dream. The old basic structure in stone and other traditional materials, combines playfully with novel design to create modern comfort. Stone walls were rebuilt, garden terraces and stone sculptures appeared. This has been the ideal place to conduct workshops, for Janet in voice and singing technique, and for Nistal in sculpture and meditation.

ITALY, TEXAS Italy is at the junction of U.S. Highway 77 and State Highway 34, on the Blackland Prairie forty-five miles south of Dallas in southwest Ellis County. Although a few families had settled in the vicinity by 1860, the Aycock brothers built the first house on the present site of the town in 1879 and used it as a dwelling, grocery store, and post office. That year residents debated what to name the settlement. Some favored Houston Creek, because Sam Houston qv reportedly camped on the creek that flowed through town. Others wanted the name Egypt or Italy. The postal department rejected the first choice because of possible confusion with Houston Creek in Harris County. Gabriel J. Penn, postmaster in Waxahachie, named the town Italy in 1880 because the climate was much like that found in "sunny Italy." The population was 500 in 1890. Settlers found the land good for cotton, corn, sweet potatoes, and wheat. The greatest impetus for growth occurred in December 1890, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad arrived, and the town became a market center for the surrounding area. The next year the first newspaper was published, and Italy was officially incorporated. The Great Depression qv started a downward trend for Italy that lasted for thirty-five years. In 1930 the town had 1,230 residents and forty-five businesses. In 1960 the population was 1,183, and in 1970 the businesses numbered twenty. Throughout the period agricultural operations expanded and displaced much of the rural population. An upswing began in 1975, when milo and corn production increased. The town had become a bedroom community for the Dallas-Fort Worth area by 1980, when the population was 1,306. The town sponsors an Italian festival each June and supports the S. M. Dunlap Memorial Library. In 1990 the population was 1,699.
