Historical-geographical tour of
Nara from the air
Nara is an ancient capital of Japan that abounds with archaeological sites and cultural heritage. Historical monuments in Nara were inscribed on the World Heritage List announced by UNESCO in 1998. This web page guides you on a tour of the nature, history and culture of Nara. The old Japanese word soramitsu was used in classical Japanese poetry as an epithet for Yamato, the old name of the Nara region. Because the Japanese word sora means sky and mi means viewing, Nihon-shoki , a history compiled in the 8th century, explained the derivation of the word soramitsu by the legend that a deity named Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto viewed Yamato from a flying ship and then landed there. Accordingly, this tour uses a satellite image as an index and aerial photos in explanations of the various things you'll discover.

Stand upon ancient walls of Ryukyu history
By: Kenny Ehman If you would like to visit some historical sites around Okinawa, you should definitely put Nakagusuku Castle on your list of places to see this year. The castle was built in the first half of the fifteenth century by Lord Gosamaru, one of Okinawa's most famous warriors. Nakagusku's stone walls sit high on top of Nakagusku village, rising above the Pacific Ocean on the east coast of the island. The castle's remains characterize the Ryukyu Kingdom era, and eerily declare their once powerful presence. It is one of the best preserved castles within the Prefecture, and is also one of the most impressive. After passing through the entrance to the park, follow the signs and walk along the northern face of the castle. Signs will point the way, giving you a choice of entering from the castle's "ura mon" (rear gate) or the "sei mon" (main gate), which is located much further away. To get a real historical perspective of Nakagusuku, take the long route to the main gate - you will slowly be drawn toward its energy as you walk along the lushly covered slopes at the castle's base. Huge trees and sub-tropical vegetation hide the castle's ruins, until you reach the far end of the grounds. Walk up the remnants of a stone road where you will come upon a small, green field overlooking Nakagusuku Bay. Cliffs drop down, covered with thick forest. You can begin to imagine the natural defense Nakagusuku's surrounding terrain provided. From here, continue to your left and follow the signs to the main gate, where you will enter a world of legend and mystery.

The History of Gardening: A Timeline
    From Ancient Times to 1600
35,000 BCE (BCE = Before the Common Era or Christian-Roman Era)
Evidence from archeological sites (tools, corprolites) indicates that Homo Sapiens at the end of the Paleolithic period
had knowledge of many plants dervied from food gathering techniques. Different kids of fruits, nuts, and roots were
only gathered , not cultivated. 15,000 BCE
"The history of the origin of human civilizations and agriculture is, of course, much older than the documentation in the form of pyramids, inscriptions and bas-reliefs or tombs can tell us. A close acquaintance with cultivated plants and with the multitude of types and their differentiation into geographical groups as well as their frequently sharp physiological isolation from each other compel us to refer the very origin of cultivated plants to such remote epochs, where periods of 5-10,000 years such as concern archeologists represent but a brief moment."

    * Archaeologists long believed that Japan had no prehistoric culture; however, excavations conducted since end of WWII have unearthed Paleolithic chipped-stone tools (but no human remains).
    • People who used these tools probably moved from Asia to Japan over several land bridges that joined Japanese islands with the mainland (near Korea and SE coastline of Siberia).
    • Paleolithic Age in Japan dated from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago. Little known about the islands' inhabitants during this timeartifacts indicate they probably lived in pits or caves, used fire, and subsisted by hunting/gathering. No bone or horn tools or pottery recovered from these sites (indicates a Pre-Pottery culture).
    * Paleolithic peoples followed by two Neolithic cultures: Jomon culture (c. 5000 B.C. - c. 250 B. C.): remains show characteristic Neolithic progression from chipped to polished tools and manufacture of pottery, the latter highly developed. Jomon culture spread slowly throughout all Japanese islands, with different regions manufacturing different kinds of pottery.
    • Dwellings were either shallow pits or open, stone-floored space, both covered with roofs. These structures (from 5-6 to several dozen), often grouped together in horseshoe-shaped settlements, with open, commons-space in center.

In November 1902 we published the first volume of The Cambridge Modern History. This reprinted within a month, and established the genre of collaborative scholarly reference uniquely associated with Cambridge. The original twelve volumes of the Cambridge Modern History were swiftly followed by the Cambridge History of English Literature, the Cambridge Medieval History, the Cambridge Ancient History and the Histories of India and the British Empire. A further wave of commissioning from the 1950s to the 1980s initiated the Cambridge Histories of China, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Islam, Iran, various Cambridge Economic Histories, and the revision and renewal of some of the original Histories. During the last decade further expansion has taken place, with Cambridge Histories of political thought, of literature and of philosophy all coming to fruition. Throughout 2002 we shall be celebrating the centenary of the 'Cambridge History' as an institution, and as an exemplar of the quality and continued scholarly resonance of Cambridge publishing.
