ASIAN LANGUAGES LIBRARY
1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Collection began its development in 1966, together with the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, and was first housed in the same building as the Department in Wynyard Street. A subject librarian was appointed to look after the Collection, and regular funding for the purchase of monographs and periodicals in the Japanese language began in 1968. By 1971 the collection had grown to about 7,200 volumes, and it was transferred to Level 3 of the General Library when the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures moved to a new location in 1972. In 1989, New Zealand’s first Korean studies course was introduced with the sponsorship of the Yongkang Foundation, and Korean language material was added to the Collection. 2.. DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION The core of the Collection is resources on the literature, history, language, philosophy and religions of China, Japan and Korea. This is supplemented by subject related indexes, reference works and bibliographic tools. It has a total of 60,000 volumes of monographs plus 5,500 bound volumes of serials and other material. Of these two-thirds are in Chinese, one-third in Japanese and about 5,000 volumes in Korean. The Collection also comprises Chinese, Japanese and Korean newspapers, audio-visual materials and online links via LEARN to virtual resources.

JAPANESE AND CHINESE CULTURE AND SOCIETY
Outline
This sub-department consists of two sections, and aims to help students engage in a particular, general and interrelational study of Japanese and Chinese language, culture and society. It is based on three axes. 1. Methodological efforts to transcend the traditional tripartition of philosophy, history and literature. 2. Insistence on the positive nature and objectivity of research. 3. Elucidation of the homogeneity and heterogeneity of Japan and China in their historical and cultural relationship. There are two subdivisions:
  • Japanese Culture and Society
  • JAPANESE CULTURE AND SOCIETY
Japanology in Japan must aim at a conscious elucidation of the cultural characteristics of Japan. For this purpose, the section recommends a comparative study from the points of view of Asiatic and World history. Organic relationships with other related Sub-Department are required.

  • Japan, Land of the Rising Sun
Japan is an archipelago, or a group of islands, about 100 miles east of the Asian mainland. The ancient Japanese knew about China and Korea, but they did not know of any land east of their islands. They believed theirs was the first land awakened by the rising sun. The Japanese call their land Nippon, meaning "Land of the Rising Sun." The Europeans learned of Japan from the Chinese, who mispronounced the name as Zipango. That word eventually evolved into Japan.

While retaining its time-honored culture, Japan rapidly absorbed Western technology during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After its devastating defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become the second most powerful economy in the world and a staunch ally of the US.
  • Japan
Japan is an island state comprising a group of four principal islands and several smaller ones, off the east coast of Asia. It is bound by the Sea of Japan, the Korea Strait and the East China Sea to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the east and the La Perouse Strait to the north.

Nat would become our tour guide to Nara, the beautiful ancient (710 - 784 AD) capital and the cradle of its arts, crafts, literature and industries. It was in Nara that Buddhism first appeared in Japan and reached its peak in 752 when Diahutsu, the world's largest bronze statue of Buddha, was completed in the Todaiji Temple
The main hall of Todaiji Temple houses the Diahutsu and is known as the world's largest wooden structure. Both the Diahutsu and the main hall have been damaged or destroyed by fire numerous times since they were first completed. The present statue dates to 1692 and the building to 1709.

      CHRISTOPHER FARAONE
The ancient Greeks commonly resorted to magic spells to attract and keep loversas numerous allusions in Greek literature and recently discovered "voodoo dolls," magical papyri, gemstones, and curse tablets attest. Surveying and analyzing these various texts and artifacts, Christopher Faraone reveals two distinct types of love magic: the curselike charms used primarily by men to torture unwilling women with fiery and maddening passion until they surrender sexually; and the binding spells and debilitating potions generally used by women to sedate angry or philandering husbands and make them more affectionate.

EDITED BY IRAD MALKIN This book is a study of the variable perceptions of Greek collective identity, discussing ancient categories such as blood- and mythically-related primordiality, language, religion, and culture. With less emphasis on dichotomies between Greeks and others, the book considers complex middle grounds of intra-Hellenic perceptions, oppositional identities, and outsiders' views. Studying archaeological, historical, artistic and literary aspects from the Archaic period through the Roman Empire, this book illustrates the force and validity of ethnicity in history.
