http://www.jinjapan.org/access/education/curricula.html
Introduction History Schools and Curricula Issues in Japanese Education The Challenge of Reform Schools and Curricula School calendar: For most elementary, junior high, and high schools, the school year in Japan begins on April 1 and is divided into three terms: April to July, September to December, and January to March. Some schools follow a two-term schedule. Schools are gradually moving to a five-day week, but as of 1998 children still attended school on Saturday mornings two or three times a month. On average, Japanese students spend considerably more time studying than students in most other advanced industrial nations. This may be attributable to the shorter summer vacation and heavier homework load at Japanese schools, plus the large amount of time many students spend at extracurricular activities. Japanese I. Before Coming To Japan CHAPTER 2. CHOOSING THE ROUTE TO STUDY IN JAPAN (4) Japanese Language School in Japan In case of the route (c) to study in Japan it is difficult to study for entrance examination for a Japanese university when living in a foreign country for the first time. Therefore, Japanese language educational institutions have a lot of impact on the students who want to study in Japan. 1. Japanese Language School Foreign students who comes to Japan as self supporting, can enter either Japanese Language Schools which are accredited by the Association of International Education Japan (Kourin Build. 2F 1-13-19, Kita-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Phone +81-3-5386-0080) or Japanese language programs of universities. All of the schools are listed in the "list of Japanese Language Educational Institutions" which is published by the Association of International Education Japan. You can look up the list in Japanese embassies or consulates abroad. More than half of the Japanese language schools are concentrated in Tokyo and over 60% of the foreign students who go to Japanese language schools are also in Tokyo. (1) Full time or part time?

ADMISSION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Keio University has eight undergraduate faculties and nine graduate schools, as well as the Japanese Language Program (Bekka) of the Center for Japanese Studies. For international students who wish to study at Keio, the three options listed below are available depending on the purpose of your study.
To study Japanese in the Japanese Language Program or in the Summer Intensive Program of Japanese in the Center for Japanese Studies. To pursue an undergraduate degree as a regular student in an undergraduate faculty. To pursue a graduate degree as a regular student in a graduate school. Qualifications for Admission Japanese Language Program Graduates/students of four-year universities, graduates of senior high schools outside Japan, or others with equivalent educational background may be admitted. For the Summer Intensive Program, applicants need to have graduated from or be currently enrolled at a four-year college/university.
Degree Programs Keio University offers special arrangements for international students to apply for admission overcoming any disadvantages in taking the entrance examinations due to differences in secondary educational background or Japanese language ability. A sufficient level of Japanese language proficiency, however, is required because most of the courses at Keio University are offered in Japanese. You also need to take and pass the entrance examinations given by the undergraduate faculties and graduate schools. In recent years, a new provision has been added so that an international student may seek admission to Keio without the burden of traveling to Japan just to take entrance examinations.

Stanford's interdisciplinary M.A. program in East Asian Studies permits the student to construct a course of study suited to individual intellectual interests and career needs. Applications are invited from four types of prospective students: 1) those who wish to concentrate on East Asia for the Ph.D., but have not yet decided on the particular discipline in which they prefer to work; 2) those who have settled on a discipline, but want to obtain intensive area studies and language training before beginning their doctoral program; 3) those who wish to specialize in East Asian Studies in preparation for careers in such fields as law, business, pre-collegiate teaching, journalism, and government service. It should be stressed that, in addition to the A.M. in East Asian Studies, additional training in a professional discipline is usually essential to finding employment in the professions;
