Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell, Goochland (now called Albemarle) County, Virginia . His father, Peter Jefferson, was a successful planter and surveyor in Virginia. His mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was from a wealthy family. Education and Marriage
From 1760 to 1762, Jefferson attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He later studied law privately. He began practicing law in 1767. Monticello was the Virginia house that Jefferson designed and lived in most of his life. It was built on land that he inherited from his family. Construction on Monticello began in 1769 but continued for decades as Jefferson added to the house. In 1772, Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton (she died in 1782, after giving birth to their sixth child, Lucy Elizabeth). Only two of their children survived to adulthood.

Jefferson, Thomas
The third President of the United States (1801-1809). A member of the second Continental Congress, he drafted the Declaration of Independence (1776). His presidency was marked by the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France (1803) and the Tripolitan War (1801-1805). A political philosopher, educator, and architect, Jefferson designed his own estate, Monticello, and buildings for the University of Virginia. Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas (1743-1826), third president of the United States (1801-1809) and author of the Declaration of Independence. He was a philosopher, educator, naturalist, politician, scientist, architect, inventor, pioneer in scientific farming, musician, and writer. Jefferson was the foremost spokesperson of his day for democracy. As president, he strengthened the powers of the executive branch of government. He was also the first president to lead a political party. Jefferson had great faith in popular rule and sought to develop a government that would best assure the freedom and well-being of the individual. Early Career
Jefferson was born in western Goochland County, Virginia. In 1760 he entered the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He later studied law and was reasonably successful as a lawyer, but his main source of income was his land. In 1767 Jefferson began work on his mountaintop estate, Monticello, near what is now Charlottesville, Virginia. He designed the mansion himself. He was serving as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the lower chamber of the Virginia legislature, when he married Martha Wayles Skelton in 1772.

Electoral College vote, Aaron Burr (who had been slated for the office of Vice President) was found to have tied Jefferson for President. The choice was automatically left to the House of Representatives, where Jefferson was elected after a long deadlock, largely because Hamilton advised the Federalists to support Jefferson as less dangerous than Burr. Jefferson was the first President inaugurated in Washington, D.C., a city he had helped to plan. He instituted a republican simplicity in the new capital, cut expenditures in all branches of government, replaced Federalist appointees with Republicans, and sought to curb the powers of the judiciary, where he felt that the Federalists were attempting to entrench their philosophy. He believed that the federal government should be concerned mostly with foreign affairs, leaving the states and local governments free to administer local matters. Despite his contention that the Constitution must be interpreted strictly, he pushed through the

Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson wished to be remembered for three achievements in his public life. He had served as governor of Virginia, as U.S. minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington , as vice-president in the administration of John Adams, and as president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. On his tombstone, however, which he designed and for which he wrote the inscription, there is no mention of these offices. Rather, it reads that Thomas Jefferson was "author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia" and, as he requested, "not a word more." Historians might want to add other accomplishmentsfor example, his distinction as an architect, naturalist, and linguistbut in the main they would concur with his own assessment.
Early Life
Jefferson was born at Shadwell in what is now Albemarle County, Va., on Apr. 13, 1743. He treated his pedigree lightly, but his mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, came from one of the first families of Virginia; his father, Peter Jefferson, was a well-to-do landowner, although not in the class of the wealthiest planters. Jefferson attended (1760-62) the College of William and Mary and then studied law with George WYTHE. In 1769 he began six years of service as a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. The following year he began building Monticello on land inherited from his father. The mansion, which he designed in every detail, took years to complete, but part of it was ready for occupancy when he married Martha Wayles Skelton on Jan. 1, 1772. They had six children, two of whom survived into adulthood:

If you did, you should thank Thomas Jefferson because it’s a variation on invention of his called the cipher wheel. While he was serving as the Secretary of State (1790-93) Jefferson devised this ingenious way to code and decode messages. Jefferson’s wheel consisted of twenty-six cylindrical wooden pieces, each threaded onto an iron spindle. The letters of the alphabet were inscribed on each wheel in random order. Turning the wheels the words could be scrambled and unscrambled. The trick was that only someone with a matching wheel could ever figure out the messages. Although Jefferson apparently stopped using the cipher wheel after 1802, it was "reinvented" just prior to World War I and used by the US army and other military services to send messages back and forth. Thomas Jefferson
3rd US president, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, 1743-1826.
Our principles are founded on the immovable basis of equal right and reason. The earth belongs to the living, not to the dead. The happiest moments of my life have a been the few which I have passed at home in the bosom of my family. Peace and friendship with all mankind is our wisest policy, and I wish we may be permitted to pursue it. One man with courage is a majority. The man who fears no truth has nothing to fear from lies. It is more dangerous that even a guilty person should be punished without the forms of law than that he should escape. If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny. If once the people become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, Judges and Governors, shall all become wolves. It seems to be the law of our general nature, in spite of individual exceptions. I, however, place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared.
