    TRANSPORTATION AND MAPS
Transportation is the moving of people and goods from one place to another and connects one place with many others. Location is an important reason why communities begin and grow. There are many forms of transportation students can identify with and each kind has played a major role in the development of communities in New Jersey. The state's location bordering two major cities —New York City and Philadelphia — and two surrounding rivers serving as harbors—the Delaware and the Hudson Rivers — has shaped New Jersey's role in the United States as a "pathway" of goods, such as food or clothing, and people. In this section students will focus on one method of transportation, the automobile, and how people have come to rely on cars every day. Through the examination and comparison of present and past New Jersey road maps students will come to realize how the construction of roads and highways reflected the prominence of cars. OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES
    • Activity 1 - Students will discuss and brainstorm different forms of transportation people use in New Jersey and the United States.

    New York smokey in distance
i think that the " aerial shot taken from a long distance from new york " may have been taken from carteret, new jersey, which is a vantage from which a lot of the panoramic shots of the skyline are taken (most of the shots of the skyline that are familiar are taken from NJ, for, as i (at least attempted to) explain in a previous emessage, there aren't any bridges to obscure the view. if the view is from the southwest of the island of manhattan (and it sounds so from the description - especially the bit about lady liberty being a cyan spec in the left; is staten island visible? (it would be to the southwest of the battery - there is another, unihabited, island closer to the tip of manhattan named governor's island - it was once were paupers were burried, but is now where you need to go in order to get your car when it is towed by the city of new york) can you see a suspension bridge in the right-hand side of the picture? Stephen: There is no suspension bridge visible. If there was no smoke (the smoke obscures nearly the entire island right down to the water, with the exception of a small section of land which is not built up at the far right) the bridges would be visible in the middle of the picture.

    • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).

    New Jersey Maps its Wetlands
To more efficiently regulate the preservation of its wetlands, New Jersey has developed a GIS basemap accurate to within an acre. Aug 95 Level of Govt: State Function: GIS Problem/situation: To preserve wetlands, regulatory agencies need to ascertain the location and extent of the protected areas. Solution: GIS database accurate to within an acre. Jurisdiction: New Jersey By Bill McGarigle Special to Government Technology Few areas in the nation have lost more wetlands than the state of New Jersey. The major causes are a growing population, expanding development and, until recently, a lack of effective resource management tools. The problem is compounded by New Jersey's geography. According to the state's Land Use Regulation Program administrator, Ernest Hahn, "If you get any size parcel in New Jersey, you'll probably have some wetlands associated with them - there are no vast areas of the state that do not have wetlands resources, even in the hilly country of North Jersey." The state's first attempt to stem the loss of coastal wetlands was the Wetlands Act of 1970. "They passed that act," explained Hahn, "because we were having wholesale destruction of those areas as a result of houses built out on the marshes. [Developers] would just fill in the marsh and push out a new road. Everybody would get a lagoon and a waterfront lot." The Wetlands Act of 1970 required the state to completely map all coastal wetlands and create maps that could be used as a regulatory tool in screening applications.

Tuesday, Apr 08, 2003 News Posted on Sun, May. 26, 2002 Census: New Jersey lifestyles still divided by geography By Joseph A. Gambardello Inquirer Staff Writer There never has been one New Jersey. Even in the colonial times it was officially divided between East Jersey and West Jersey. Then came the appellations North Jersey and South Jersey. And in recent years, we've been hearing more about a Central New Jersey - an area encompassing counties in the state's narrow middle that also has been called the Wealth Belt. New census numbers based on prerecession, pre-Sept. 11 surveys are out and they only go to reinforce the notion that the Garden State is made of more than one crop. The North has the richest counties, the Center has the biggest growth, and the South - well let's just say the South has space and is slowly catching up, especially in the amount of time it takes to drive to work. So what is it that North and Central Jersey have that South Jersey does not?

Situated in the mid west of the Island, St Peter is the only parish with two coastlines, one a short stretch at Beaumont on St Aubin's Bay and the other a portion in the middle of St Ouen's Bay. It is divided into five vingtaines; Douet, St Nicholas, Grande Vingtaine, Vingtaine d'Augrez and Coin Varin ( Augeres and Varin were local names). Although it is difficult to confirm, it is believed that the parish of St Peter, along with the other four central parishes of the Island, has existed since about AD475.

    THE ISLAND
Around the Island Parish information St Helier ... States information St Helier - Geography
A great deal of myth surrounds Jersey's patron saint and all that can be said with any certainty is that he lived an austere and pious existence on the rocky outcrop now known as the hermitage and that he was axed to death by pirates in AD 555. The two crossed axes on St Helier's parish crest are a reminder of how the martyr who gave his name to the capital met his violent end, probably at the hands of marauding Vikings. Jersey purportedly had only 30 inhabitants at that time who, as a result of the regular Norse invasions, were naturally terrified of strangers, but who eventually came to respect the devout ascetic who had come to their Island from Limburg.

    The SADC's Geographical Policies
An evolving complex of plans, policies and initiatives has, over the years, attempted to bring geographical coherence to farmland preservation. The concept of a "critical mass" was the original basis for establishing what, in SADC parlance, came to be the goal to "permanently preserve significant areas of reasonably contiguous farmland that will promote the long-term viability of agriculture as an industry." An examination of program maps at a regional scale shows that this has been accomplished to a marked degree, though doubts remain when local patterns of suburbanization intermingled with agriculture are examined. The SADC has adopted a succession of measures intended to bring about this geographic focus. The 1983
