SEPTEMBER 9, 2002 CULTURE
As Jews celebrate their High Holy Days through Sept. 16, they can also celebrate a renaissance among Jewish museums. At a time when many cultural institutions are facing shrinking budgets and dwindling donations, Jewish museums seem to be thriving. In New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage is adding a new $60 million wing blocks from the destruction of Ground Zero. Two healthy California Jewish museums are merging to share a showplace space in downtown San Francisco. And a $10 million Jewish museum is planned for Cleveland, Ohio. Jewish museums range from stately institutions to collections in the corners of synagogues and Jewish community centers. "The interest in American Jewish history has been rising astronomically," says Ellen Smith, a consultant to many Jewish museums nationally. "Museums have emerged as one of the most able educators for people of all ages, economic and social backgrounds to learn about Jews as a people and Jews as holders of the faith." When the Council of American Jewish Museums was founded in 1977, it had just seven member institutions. Now there are more than 80. But the museums' growth carries with it questions of identity - particularly at a time when the U.S. Jewish population is struggling with lower synagogue affiliation and high intermarriage rates. A recent controversial pop-art Holocaust exhibit at the Jewish Museum in New York - which included a concentration camp model made out of Legos - showed that art can anger as well as enlighten. Are Jewish museums in your area and state expanding or shifting their focus? At a time when American Christians are showing increased interest in Judaism and the state of Israel, are museums aiming exhibits mainly at Jews or non-Jews? What face - religious or secular - are they putting on Jewish identity?

Harnessing Technology for Jewish Museums
by Miriam Ancis
With the increasing availability of broadband access, the Internet revolution is now ushering in a new era of museum education that will permit Jewish museums to further their mission of preserving and transmitting Jewish experience. Jewish museums can reach out to communities of various nationalities and ages by launching innovative exhibits as a way of attracting online students, researchers, and the curious to their collections. As an example of a dynamic virtual museum, the Smithsonian museum's online offering, "The Virtual Smithsonian," leads the way with a stunning presentation of the museum's mission, collection, and vision. Through a series of online exhibits, artifacts are displayed with just the right amount of text accompanied by the seductiveness of sound, video clips and cool photographic tricks. Today, "The Virtual Smithsonian" (having no doubt been produced with a multimillion-dollar budget) stands nearly alone in cyberspace. A portion of The Jewish Museum's site (jewishmuseum.org) called the "Contemporary Artists Projects," approaches this level of innovation by displaying artwork specifically made for computer viewing. By airing these pieces, The Jewish Museum advances the possibilities for this new art form. More often than not, however, museum sites are little more than pages of a book onscreen. Our challenge is to integrate the capacity of CD technology - animation, graphics, music and video, mental and kinesthetic games - with the Internet's contribution of interpersonal discussion. Sites that utilize these technologies will be able to offer dynamic exhibits that call on the viewer to function as an active participant along with fellow virtual-museum travelers.

Introduction to Spiritual Meditation (Part 1)
Gabe Goldman
Location: N1
Tracks: Spirituality Philosophy Education
Type: Creative
This session will introduce you to spiritual meditation that can take place when sitting in a synagogue, walking in the woods, when you lie down, or when you rise up. If you are one of the many people who have become spiritually numb, secretly doubt that there is a spiritual dimension to Jewish life, or have given up on the power of prayer, this is your
opportunity to see beyond the matrix of superficial
reality. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan teaches us that there was a time in Jewish history when hundreds of thousands of ordinary people like yourself were trained to become minor prophets, capable of seeing beyond the limits of their senses, and knowing information beyond the limits of their minds. Through Gabe's guided meditation, you will have the opportunity to experience what these minor prophets experienced.

Personal Reflections on Cultural Diversity
A Visit to Museums in Germany
A Canadian museum worker's personal discovery of Germany's Jewish heritage as portrayed in that country's museums.
by Sandra Morton Weizman
In June 1993, I attended the First International Symposium for the Study of Childhood in Museums, held in Cologne, Germany. It was my first visit to that country, and I was curious about what I would find. Questions posed by my elementary school Judaic Studies teachers of 30 years ago echoed in my head: Where were the good Germans? How could they have allowed the mass extermination of six million Jews? I wondered about the collective consciousness of German people now50 years after the Holocaustand, as a curator, I was interested to see how Jewish themes and cultural diversity would be interpreted in German museums.
There was ample opportunity to find out, even in an eight-day visit which included a full conference schedule and a study tour of 12 museums. The day after my arrival I went on a guid-ed bus tour of Cologne. Like many German cities, Cologne is primarily modern in its architecture, as most of the city was bombed by the Allies in World War II. Our tour guide pointed out several old brick factory build-ings currently used to house Cologne's annual art trade shows. He explained that these buildings had survived the war because the Allies knew they were used by the Nazis for the selection and detainment of Jews, Gypsies and other undesirables before they were sent off on trains bound for concentration camps. I noted that the guide's tone was cool and matter-of-fact as he related this information.

Religious Humanism: The Philosophy of Andreas Simonsen
Andreas Simonsen (1923-91) was Jewish on both his fathers's and mother's side of the family. His father, Rudolph Simonsen, was a lawyer and in addition had an excellent ear for music; he was the managing director of the Copenhagen School of Music for a number of years. Although Rudolph Simonsen was a member of the Jewish Community, judaism did not play a significant role in his home, and Andreas Simonsen remained a stranger to any kind of established religion all his life. From his early youth Andreas Simonsen was drawn to a humanistic view of life, and it was this interest that led him to study the classics, specializing in Socrates.

The Jewish Museum in Stochholm, Sweden
The Jewish museum in Stochholm, founded by Aron and Viola Neuman in 1987, has become a successful cultural and educational institution. Its head and founder Aron Neuman argues that four key ingredients are essential for the establishment of a Jewish museum:
  • the quality of its personnel
  • sufficient capital

Beyond the Pale: The History of Jews in Russia "This exhibition depicts the history of anti-Jewish attitudes and of anti-Semitism today, a form of intolerance that in our century caused the death of millions of people. The exhibition also portrays the history of Jews in Europe and in Russia to help understand their life, religion and culture. " A nice, well-illustrated and very extensive exhibition covering the history of Jews in the Pale where, of course, the vast majority of American Jews immigrated from. Builders of America "One of the most interesting yet relatively unknown aspects of Jewish history concerns Jewish involvement with the creation of America. This involvement is chronicled here on the Internet, and also in a travelling exhibit entitled 'Builders of America -The Jewish Heritage.'" Presented by Florida Atlantic University Libraries. The Jewish Museum Good coverage of current and exhibitions, and a sample of their permanent exhibition. The Jewish Museum is dedicated to chronicling Jewish life in all its multiplicity. National Museum of American Jewish History: Creating American Jews "The permanent exhibition of the National Museum of American Jewish History. Exploring the evolution of Jewish identity in America."
