Job-Hunting Advice For B-School Grads
By S TEVE L UBRANO When the M.B.A. Class of 2003 matriculated, they had no idea that their job search would be this hard. Sure, the dot-com vision was evaporating, but everybody figured the markets would be turning around by now. Most of the news these days is a tough pill to swallow at least at first taste but maybe the long-term results will justify the pain. Historically, what a graduate ought to do was more important than what she wanted to do. Now these priorities have switched, and students are entertaining careers that were never under consideration a few years ago.

... How to Raise Teenagers
Read Advice Write an essay on this topic. Advice For Teens Job Hunting
Jul 01 '00
Now that my daughter is a teen and would like a job, I've realized that many students have not been properly guided in the art of job hunting. I hope the following can assist in finding a job they'll enjoy (and get!).
Appearance: Though you may look "cool" to your friends, bell bottoms, torn clothes, tight/short clothes do not impress the interviewer. Nor does multiple body piercings or dreadlocks. Face it - your interviewer is hopelessly behind the times. Dress to impress your interviewer - it'll only help. Basic logic is to wear clean, conservative (your parents view of "normal"), unwrinkled clothes.
The application: Be prepared; take names, addresses and phone numbers of people you know would give you a good reference. Also take along your social security card and driver's license or permit and any other picture ID you may have. Take along the dates you worked at any previous job. Choose your words carefully on why you left your last job. Putting down "fired" almost automatically disqualifies you. Instead note "discuss at interview" or left for personal reasons, unless you left for a better paying job. Write neatly and legibly. Fill out the application thoroughly. If something does not apply to you, write N/A (not applicable) in the space. This shows you didn't forget to answer something.
The interview: Be on time. Look enthused (happy to be there). Do at least a little research on the company - via computer or at the library. It would be very impressive to tell the interviewer "I see this company has been in business since 1978. I'd like to work for a company that's well-established in the community." Do not bad-mouth any other company, past employer, co-worker or boss. It will not impress the interviewer, only make them wonder why you can't get along with others.

Job-Hunting
I recently interviewed with one of my company's chief competitors. When offered the job, I declined. Now I'm worried that my boss will hear about my interview through the grapevine and think I'm disloyal. Does business etiquette require me to tell him?
It's not necessary to tell him; in today's world, it's a given that employees are keeping their career options open. If he does find out and confronts you, you can gently remind him that you proved your loyalty when you didn't take the job. There are scenarios where it's appropriate to go public about interviewing elsewhere if you and your boss concur there is no future for you at your current place of employment, or if you've announced you're relocating or changing careers. Neither of these applies to you.

Search Jobs My Monster Career Advice ... For Employers Job Hunting Strategies That Really Work
by James C. Gonyea
Monster Contributing Writer Many job seekers view their job search as an unpleasant experience filled with frustration, stressful encounters with strangers, a loss of control over their life and an opportunity for personal failure. Job hunting can be difficult, but it doesn't have to be! With proper preparation and a good attitude, looking for the right job can be an opportunity to truly enhance your career. Prepare for Success Finding a job requires preparation. To do it right, start with a thorough self-assessment that includes exploration of your work and school history, military service, hobbies, volunteer activities, ambitions, preferred lifestyle, values and needs. From this review, determine which occupations best match your personality style and then establish appropriate job-hunting goals. If you find this step difficult, seek assistance from a professional career counselor. Prepare your resume and portfolio of accomplishments, organize a support group of friends and relatives to help you conduct your job search, and you're ready to begin.

The most common method of job hunting is to read through the employment section of the major daily newspapers, like the Age and the Australian. However, only 30% of jobs are advertised. The remainder form what is referred to as the 'hidden job market'. The idea behind creative job hunting is to use multiple job search methods. To get you started, read the information below.

Recruitment Agencies
Many companies and government departments now use recruitment agencies to recruit staff. There are literally hundreds of recruitment agencies operating in Melbourne, most agencies will specialise in particular industries or jobs, such as engineering, finance, media, etc. Others specialise in certain levels of jobs, such as executive recruitment or graduate recruitment
Networking
Networking is the process of indentifying and making contact with people who can assist you in your job search. It can be as simple as telling your friends and family that you are looking for work, indicating your areas of interest and asking them for a contact they might have in your field who is in a position of authority to hire. You can also ask them if they know of any relevant current job vacancies.

Job Ads - What to Look For
Always study job ads carefully, this will help you decide whether the position and company are best suited to you. The ad will also help you when constructing the cover letter and give you ideas for questions when being interviewed. Advertisements will usually contain the following information:
  • Job title.
  • Company details.
  • Key characteristics of department, business area etc.
  • Location.
  • Job specifications - duties and responsibilities.
  • Personal specifications - education/qualifications, experience, personal qualities required.
  • Salary package.
Don't be tempted to look at the job title or heading alone and dash off a letter/reply. Respond as requested, no matter how unusual or inconvenient (e.g., handwriting your CV, including a photograph, telephoning for an initial chat etc). If you are asked to telephone an agency, prepare yourself to be screened on the telephone - have your CV and any other relevant information to hand.

And once again, your spouse's career takes precedence and yours is back at square one. Even if you are in total agreement with the move, you will still experience two of the highest stress factors in existance simultaneously - moving and unemployment. Along with death of a family member, loss of a spouse, and disaster, moving and being unemployed rank among the top five stress producers. To be faced with two of the top stressers simultaneously requires the marshalling of all your survival and recovery instincts. You're moving to make life better, but that is only true if moving is best for both of you and the rest of the members of your family. Your job as the transferred spouse is to make the best of the transition. Finding the right employment situation will get you well on the road to accomplishing that goal.
