42. Journalism At NYU - Career Services: Job Hunting Tools
It also clarifies which job you're applying for. The best cover letters are lively, bold and conversational, but not gimmicky. Customize your letter.
http://journalism.fas.nyu.edu/alumni/careerservices/jobhunting/coverletter.html
COVER LETTER
Your cover letter carries as much weight as your resume . Maybe even more, because it's what the employer usually reads first. The cover letter is your handshake, your voice, a chance to engage the employer apart from your resume and work samples. It also clarifies which job you're applying for. Even if the application instructions don't specify sending a cover letter, you should include one.
Keep your letter to one page. Make it original, and sell your best qualities. Don't be afraid to let somebody know (without sounding cocky) that you're special. The best cover letters are lively, bold and conversational, but not gimmicky.
Customize your letter. Include a line or two that shows you're familiar with the publication or station you're applying to: what it does, its history and the audience it serves. And don't send a letter addressed to "Dear Sir or Madam" or "Dear Recruiter." You're a journalist, so get the correct name, title and address of the person you should apply to. Make a phone call if necessary to make sure you have it right.
Edit and proofread! This is the first example of your writing that the employer will see, and it must be perfect in every way. Don't forget to put all your contact info and the date at the top of your letter. And don't forget to sign it!

-Truthfully, not a good way to find a job. Any job that's advertised that widely will have a mound of potential candidates, and getting to the top of that mound is frustrating and unlikely.
-The ads can be useful, but more as a research tool. Find out about jobs in your chosen field, what they pay, and what the circumstances are. Research
-This is key. Go to the library or go online and do research about the kinds of jobs you want to do. Join discussion groups for people in that field. Do whatever you can think of.
-Read industry journals. Subscribe to e-mail newsletters in the field.
-Do some information interviews. Do some more. Information interviews
-This means calling up people who have the job you want, or people who manage those people. You're interested in the field, you want to talk to them about how they got there, why they got there, what they like and don't like, etc.
-Don't say, "I'm looking for a job - are there any openings?" Deny any such plan if asked. You just want to talk.

Now you move on to the next step - preparing your resume and cover letter to get yourself into the position of being invited for an interview. Look up our past topics in Focus for the tips of Building a Successful Resume . Write your cover letter using the checklist below to ensure giving a good first impression to your prospective employer.
    Sample letter

(for fresh graduates) Checklist for a perfect cover letter Address the right person
Name the correct title as it's advertised

    Precise and concise

    Tailored for the specific job
    ...
The right letter is in the right envelope with the right address

    Address the right person
Read the job ad carefully and pay special attention to the person your application is addressed to. Don't take it for granted and address "Dear Sir" when it's obviously a female recipient. It looks even worse when you address "Dear Human Resources Manager" but the ad says to the "General Manager". It's only the start of the letter and you don't want the reader to stop there and discard your application.
Name the correct title as it's advertised Make sure you are naming the job correctly. You may be applying for a few positions at the same time but don't mix up. Have the Position in bold to catch the reader's attention so that he or she won't get mixed up either. Making the recruiters' job easier is not your duty but you should do everything possible to get your application to stand out from all the rest. Do include the job reference number if you are requested to do so.

You are most understandable to potential employers in terms of your past career choices and your tenure in prior settings. Understandably, your most recent position is the clearest indication of your highest level of competency. The mere fact of change can raise questions about your motives. Are you running toward something or away from something? It is important to stay in control of your search to ensure that these market forces do not dictate your choices. Job seekers must use all the resources available to them to customize an approach to suit individual needs and overcome market obstacles.
