The Making of a Memorial "This strip of land will always be a special place for me...It appears at the moment when you come over a rise and look down into the Potomac Valley and see the capital spread out with its great monuments - the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the towering Washington Monument, and sweeping on to the gleaming dome of the Capitol. The years never diminished the feeling of pride and elation we felt in those beautiful buildings that belong to all of us. " Lady Bird Johnson, shared these sentiments on April 6,1976 at the dedication of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove. The idea for a Memorial had its beginnings in 1973, following the death of Lyndon B. Johnson. His friends and colleagues wanted a fitting memorial to the mana tribute that would recall his love of the land, and recognize his achievements in preserving the Nation's environment. Built with private funds, this project gained support from people all across the country. In Oregon, school children raised cash with a bake sale, and in New Jersey a third grade class gave money earned through yard work. The Memorial is located in Lady Bird Johnson Park, a Potomac River island in Washington, D.C. In 1968, the island was renamed in Mrs. Johnson's honor for her role in beautifying the Nation's Capital. Later, 17 acres from this park were set aside for the LBJ Memorial Grove. The Grove committee, with Mrs. Johnson as Honorary Chair and more than 70 other men and women, planned this memorial as a different sort of tribute. It would be a living place where people could enjoy the pleasures and beauties of nature, not a great stone building or a bronze or marble statue.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, president of the United States, the eldest of five children of Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson, qqv Johnson's first important political position was as director of the National Youth Administration in Texas from 1935 to 1937. Construction of his system of roadside parks put young Texans to work and quietly introduced the participation of African Americans in some NYA programs. When the incumbent congressman of the Tenth Congressional District died in 1937, Johnson entered the race as a devoted supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. He spent eleven years in the House and became intimately familiar with the legislative process. He was a supporter of Roosevelt's programs and policies and a close ally of majority leader (later speaker of the House) Sam Rayburn . He was the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 1940 and helped the Democrats retain control of the House. In 1941 he ran for the Senate from Texas but was narrowly defeated in a special election. When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, Johnson joined the navy as a lieutenant commander. He saw combat during an inspection tour of the South Pacific in 1942. He left the navy in response to President Roosevelt's directive that congressmen should remain in Washington. Johnson made another race for the Senate in 1948 against popular former governor

Webisode 15. Segment 1 Assassination In 1963, John F. Kennedy, the youngest man ever elected to the presidency, had a lot on his mind. Since he'd taken office in 1961, he'd been trying to lead the country in new directions. He had legislation he wanted passed: a civil rights bill, a tax cut bill, and a health care bill. There were also bills on equal pay for women, aid to cities and poor rural areas, manpower training, and a minimum wage. Despite early opposition, there were signs by 1963 that his ideas were beginning to be accepted in Congress. And Kennedy's reputation was growing worldwide. Great Britain's prime minister, Harold MacMillan, said this: "He seemed, in his own person, to embody all the hopes and aspirations of this new world that is struggling to emerge." But in Texas there was political trouble, and Texas's votes would be important in the coming presidential election in 1964, when Kennedy was hoping to win a second term. So when Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson , a Texan, asked Kennedy to undertake a peacemaking mission, the President thought he should make the trip. Senator J. William Fulbright urged him not to go. "Dallas is a very dangerous place," he said. "I wouldn't go there." Then Kennedy's press secretary got a letter. "Don't let the President go to Texas. Texas is too dangerous," the writer said. But the secretary put the letter aside. Everyone knew there was a group of noisy hatemongers in Dallas, but Kennedy didn't seem to worry. On a sunny November day, the President and his wife Jackie waved good-bye to their children, Caroline and John Jr., and flew off to the Lone Star State. The crowds in San Antonio and Houston and Fort Worth were unusually warm and encouraging. The President liked contact with people.
