AWAY FROM US
B ack when my brother, Eliot, and I took over the furniture business that our grandfather had founded in 1928, our father said something that I thought was wise. He said that he would always be there for us if we needed him, but that the business was ours to run and that we were in charge.
Early on, for example, we decided to focus on a segment of the market that was then largely being ignored: younger customers aged 18 to 34 who were acquiring homes and starting families, and who, therefore, very much needed furniture.
That intangible is simply the sum of a number of elements that, when combined, makes an enterprise unique. At Jordan's Furniture, in other words, we have created not only a business but also a "culture."
Culture is Critical
Just how important culture is can be illustrated with a landmark development for our company. Three years ago, a gentleman who was in town for a board of directors meeting at Boston-based Gillette Co. gave us a call and said he wanted to talk. The gentleman was legendary investor Warren E. Buffett, and what he wanted to talk about was buying Jordan's Furniture.

This section deals primarily with the region east of the Jordan River; for the history of the area to the west, see Palestine. The region of present-day Jordan was conquered successively by the Seleucids (4th cent. B.C.), Romans (mid-1st cent. A.D.), and Muslim Arabs (7th. cent.). After the Crusaders captured (1099) Jerusalem, it became part of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Ottoman Turks gained control in 1516, and what is now Jordan remained in the Ottoman Empire until World War I. In 1920 Transjordan (as it was then known) was made part of the British mandate of Palestine. The country gained independence in 1946, and the name was changed (1949) to Jordan, reflecting its acquisition of land W of the Jordan R. during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948.
Abdullah ibn Husain, a member of the Hashemite dynasty that headed Jordan since 1921, was assassinated in 1951. His grandson, Hussein I, became king the following year. Jordanian forces were routed by Israel in the 1967 war, and Jordan lost the West Bank. Growing hostility between Hussein and Palestinian guerrilla organizations operating in Jordan led to a brief civil war in 1970, and guerrilla bases were destroyed in 1971. Jordan renounced (1974; reaffirmed 1988) its claims to the West Bank in order to allow the Palestine Liberation Organization eventually to organize a state in this territory. Jordan also joined most of the other Arab countries in opposing the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. It was officially neutral in the Gulf War, but many Jordanians supported Iraq.

Jordan has 10 resettlement areas for Palestinian refugees. This one, Al Bakha, packs in 40,000 refugees in a very small area. Their poverty and lack of a homeland pained me. I [Gregg Williams] sensed a fatigue as they went through the normal efforts of each day. This Palestinian boy was probably born in this camp as a refugee. He has no nation to which he can claim citizenship reflecting his heritage. Our first day in Amman and we went for a walk in the neighborhood. These young boys enjoyed talking with us about their lives. Soon, their mother (in the upstairs window behind us) offered to have us come in for juice or tea. Each of our 27 days in the Mideast gave us similar feelings of openess and friendliness. At least some English is visible on many of the traffic signs, but I'm still not sure where a left turn would take us. (I do not recommend driving in Amman if you weren't raised and trained there.) BCOM 523 READINGS IN THE LIBERAL ARTS TRADITION: COMMERCE, CULTURE, AND COMMUNICATION Michael C. Jordan, Professor, Department of English mcjordan@stthomas.edu SUMMER SEMESTER 2002 Required Texts: Plato, Gorgias; Phaedrus; Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince; Mandragola; Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman; Pope John Paul II, On the Hundredth Anniversary of Rerum Novarum (Centesimus Annus); Lilie Chouliaraki, Discourse in Late Modernity; Charles Handy, The Hungry Spirit. COURSE OVERVIEW The title of a recently published book, Culture Matters, indicates a major theme of this course: that the economic dimension of life must be understood in the light of cultural considerations, and that therefore it is important to examine the relationship between business and culture as a whole. There is nothing startlingly new about this theme, and yet it does run against the prominent tendency to separate the various domains of human life into discrete segments viewed as operating according to distinct values and principles. We might say that an important and distinctive feature of the modern age is the dissociation of various spheres of thought, activity, and life from one another.

fax: Telephones: Required Texts: Plato, Republic; Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America; Charlotte Perkins Gilman, selections from Women and Economics; selections from The Man-Made World: Our Androcentric Culture; selections from Herland; Pope John Paul II, On the Hundredth Anniversary of Rerum Novarum (Centesimus Annus); William Leach, Land of Desire: Merchants, Power, and the rise of a New American Culture. COURSE OVERVIEW The distinctive feature in these activities is not that they overreach the legitimate boundaries of activity in economic, political, or artistic life, since it has always been true that such boundaries are sometimes violated or ignored in the pursuit of particular goals. What is distinctive in each case is the argument that each sphere of activity should be pursued and understood exclusively according to its own norms or laws and should be free from "interference" from other cultural spheres. Arguments for the autonomy of different spheres of society and culture have achieved a certain degree of prominence, power, and legitimacy within contemporary society as a whole, and we can now also find evidence of arguments bringing out the danger of dissociation. This controversy has become widespread in contemporary life and has important implications for all of us.
