JOURNAL WRITING and SELF HELP
by Phil Rich, Ed.D., MSW.
Journal writing provides a way to put thoughts down on paper where they can be seen and read, and gives shape and substance to feelings. Journaling is an effective and powerful means for self expression, fosters personal growth, and can be a valuable companion on the road to self discovery. A journal provides a place to express and explore innermost thoughts, feelings, ideas, questions, and concerns, and later return to reminisce or re-examine. It can be a place for people to talk and be honest with themselves in a way that may be difficult under other circumstances. And journals can allow people to get in touch with parts of themselves that are hidden under the surface.
Self Expression
To express means to press or squeeze out; to make known and reveal. Once out of your head, words give meaning and clarity to your feelings and thoughts, and sometimes allow you to be relieved of them. But why is it important to express feelings? Talking about things that affect us doesn't change a thing in the world around us, and it's not unusual to hear people ask "What's the point of talking about it, when it doesn't change a thing?" It's not that self expression talking about it changes the world. But, self expression has the power to change you, and the way you see and experience the world. Putting your feelings into words gives them shape and meaning. It allows you to put your feelings and thoughts into the world around you and by doing that, you connect to your environment and the people in your life.

One is their journal writing. I believe it sets the tone of the morning andgets them focused on language arts. Writing Topics. More Journal Prompts.
    http://www.tooter4kids.com/journal_writing.htm
When my students enter the classroom they have two writing tasks to complete One is their journal writing. I believe it sets the tone of the morning and gets them focused on language arts. The routine is daily and they understand that they must write. I began with just ten minutes, but they decided they needed more time. Most students now write for approximately 20 minutes. I did try the new standard of allowing students to write on any topic they wanted to. Confusion about what to write took place, even though in their journals they had ideas written down, posters on the wall about what to write about, and the teacher telling them that they can write about anything they chose. (Ex. What happened last evening or over the weekend.) That took up so much time and thinking. Most children didn't get a chance to complete anything. The whole process took too long. So, I decided to go back to where my teaching of 33 years, told me to. I began giving my students daily topics to write about. I noticed that the students seem to write more fluently, when given this, and they actually enjoyed writing in their journals. (This also helps when they are given the Fourth Grade Writing Test.) They don't need any "think" time, so the writing flowed and became easier. Since kids enjoyed the writing, the next normal progression was sharing what they wrote. This has produced a safe environment for even the shyest child. Since they feel free to write, knowing that they will not be judged by their peers, everyone was eager to share. (We even clapped for students when: we enjoyed what they wrote, or a child who had improved, or a student who just tried his/her personal best.) Oral language was developed, and a style of speaking in front of a group.

    INTRO
We work on structured reading, writing, and spelling from Monday through Thursday. If we are studying the short u, we read 'fun', 'run', 'sun', etc. We spell the words and use the words in sentences. We then read stories composed of these words and other words we have already learned. The sequence is predetermined, the structure is tightly controlled, and the skills are cumulative. The teaching method is the Gillingham Method and the philosophy is similar to the philosophy in Parenting a Struggling Reader by Susan L. Hall and Louisa C. Moats. With this skill work we build our base so that we can eventually generalize our skills to become readers and writers.
    APPLYING SKILLS: RUNNING/WRITING DAYS
Fridays are our Run to Write days. We run and then the kids write in their running journals. They know many reasons for our running: to keep our hearts strong, our bodies fit, our lungs healthy, to turn fat into muscle, AND they know something more, that in our classroom, we run to write. All of the kids are working on a goal of earning a RED RIBBON for completing 12 activities in our Run to Read and Write program. Each time they write in their journal, they get one of their 12 needed points.
Below you will find a description of our running and writing through the school year, told as I believe the kids would tell. The accounts represent my experiences with my kids over the past two years.

Contact Us A journal is a personal writing, much like a diary you may have written when you were young. It is a place to write down your thoughts, your feelings, or maybe just the events that happened in your daily life. The information that you put into your journal is totally up to you! Your journal may be in the form of notebook with several blank pages, a bound notebook, or it may be written on a personal computer and kept in electronic form. Again, the choice is up to you. You may want to keep your journal private and under lock and key. If you write it on a computer, you can use a word processing program that enables you to use a password in order to keep others from prying into your personal writings. In order to start a journal, after you have decided on what you will use to write it on, you need to just basically start writing. There are generally no set rules for starting or keeping a journal. You will probably want to write down the date before you start each entry so that you can easily keep track of when each entry was written. Some people have kept a journal of their life, along with their private hopes, dreams, and thoughts for many years since they were young. Some people make it a point to wrtie down at least a few sentences every day in order to keep a running, daily account of the happenings in their life. Then, they can go back and read their entries whenever they feel like it and recapture the times of their lives. They can read their own words and relive happy times, times of sorrow, or maybe just remember certain events that took place in their own lives. They can even read about world events that they had previously described in their own words in their journals!

    The Role of Journal Writing
    in Historical Thinking
By D. Antonio Cantu "I think of writing as a way of seeing. It's a way of bringing out the specialness of ordinary things." N The format with which I have had the most success is journal writing. For me, journal writing seems an ideal instructional tool for taking students to higher order cognitive learning levels and for achieving many of the affective learning goals I have identified as requisite to deeper understanding. I have also found journal writing to be a very effective means for integrating all of the elements of historical thinking into my curriculum. When I speak of historical thinking, I am referring to the definition outlined in the National Standards for History , which includes the following components: Chronological Thinking Historical Comprehension Historical Analysis and Interpretation Historical Research Capabilities Historical Issues-Analysis and Decision-Making I never want to sacrifice content for process, and journal writing does not require that of those who choose to utilize it in the classroom. Another benefit of journal writing for me has been the tremendous flexibility inherent in its design. Journal writing activities can be assigned on a daily, weekly and/or semester basis and can be worked out in various formats: notebooks, index cards, typed documents, 3.5" computer disks, protected/secure web pages, and e-mail messages.

Writing journals contain an author's ideas, questions, visions, dreams, and anything in between. Journals are usually written in the first person and may explore a variety of topics. Sometimes the topics may be personal; sometimes they may be general. Journals permit students to experiment with new writing forms , help establish the habit of writing , and enable students to witness their growth as writers . Journals also become repositories of ideas for writing. As the teacher, you must decide on the rules regarding journals . Will they be private? Will you look at them? Will they be shared? And if they will, with whom? Once set, these rules should never be violated. If they are, trust will be undermined, and some students may become reluctant to write. You may wish to hand out the Writing Journal Guidelines for Students and discuss its points in a mini-lesson.

We have had a dream of receiving daily journal writing and photos while the Vermont students are travelling in China and Inner Mongolia. Our high-tech vision is that someday soon a laptop computer equipped with cell modem, cell phone and wireless access to the Internet will enable our student travellers to send regular writing and attached digital photos to families, friends, and the newspapers in Vermontduring their journey. For now, this is still a dream. As Internet technology becomes more advanced and available throughout China, we hope to realize this idea. Essentials of Writing (Style Sheet) JOURNAL WRITING: BUNGEE JUMPING FOR THE BRAIN By Molly Soule, '97 and Andresse St.Rose, '97 " An intellectual journal is neither a diary nor a finished written paper." Steve Orvis, Professor of Government Professors assign journals as a tool for students to become actively engaged with the course material. Students, however, often are resistant to keeping journals because they feel unsure about either the content or the purpose of the journal. Knowing some of the basic goals common to all journals should help you approach a journal writing assignment. Common Goals of a Journal:
    • to encourage regular writing
    • to make connections between class material, lectures, and personal observations
    • to raise questions and issues that can fuel classroom discussions
    • to generate ideas for future paper topics
    • to provide a forum for inquiry, analysis, and evaluation of ideas

    78. Journal Writing - Why And How?
Writing a journal is an investment of your time. Unless you find that youget more out of it than you put into it you will quickly stop doing it.
    http://www.rightmindlogic.com/why_and_how.htm
Search this site: Advanced Search Home What it does Basically, there are two advantages of keeping a journal:
  • The process of writing something down forces you to think it through until you understand it.
  • Storing pieces of knowledge or experience saves you from reinventing the wheel.
  • However, these are potential benefits and they will not come to you automatically. Writing a journal is an investment of your time. Unless you find that you get more out of it than you put into it you will quickly stop doing it. But like with most investments it is not always easy to know if you made the wrong investment or if you should be doing it differently.
    Rule number one
You have to stay with it for a while before you make a decision. An empty journal has no value . Depending on how much you write, you should give yourself at least several weeks before you can expect to be able to see the benefits.
    Rule number two
Make it easy for yourself to enter text. Maybe the most neglected issue in this context is that you have to
