Integrated Marketing Communications Broadcast News Sequence If you are interested in working as a reporter, anchor or producer in radio and television news, the broadcast curriculum is for you. You will develop skills that will prepare you for the exciting and fast-paced world of journalism. The curriculum focuses on basic news writing and reporting, editorial decision-making, and hands-on practical experience. You will learn the profession by doing gathering news, writing, shooting and editing stories and by observing professional models of excellence. For more information, contact the broadcast news sequence head, Associate Professor Maryanne Reed, at (304) 293-3505, ext. 5409, e-mail Maryanne.Reed@mail.wvu.edu Curriculum
During the first three academic terms in Pre-Journalism, students aim to earn C or better grades in the SOJ admission prerequisites (English 101 and 102, MDS 103, Journalism 101 and 215) and a competitive JQE score. All Journalism majors ultimately must complete 30-38 hours of Journalism-related courses. In particular, the Broadcast News curriculum stresses basic news writing, editorial judgment, and the principles and practices of radio and television news production. The curriculum integrates the mechanics of broadcast journalism with the ethical principles and norms exhibited by professionals. Such preparation helps students to develop their own communication skills and to appreciate radio, television, cable, and motion pictures as communicative and journalistic arts. In addition to University LSP Cluster requirements, Broadcast News majors must select a minor, double minor, or second concentration as part of their 128 credit hours needed for graduation. Pertinent topics are suggested by advisers.

Facilitator: Victor Merina - Poynter Institute
Victor Merina of the Poynter Institute facilitated this week long course, which focussed on the reporting, writing and editing process, from story ideas to finished copy, as well as writing hard news and profiles. Participants wrote personal essays, and explored the narrative writing form. Participants went on a field trip to Itlhokomoleng Centre for the Aged in Alexandra, where they met and interacted with residents of the centre, health-care workers and community activists - including the indomitable 'Mama' Marjorie Manganye. About Victor Merina:
Victor is a former investigative reporter for the Los Angeles Times and has just finished a two-year teaching fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley, Graduate School of Journalism. A former Freedom Forum Media Studies Centre fellow based in New York City, he has led workshops on investigative reporting, ethics and reporting on race at the Poynter Institute.

No small feat for any journalist, winning the award is quite an accomplishment for emerging writers no more than five years out of journalism school. Still, it's not unheard-of for students in Samuel Freedman's book writing class. Freedman, who has taught the class since 1991, has seen four of his students' books hit the shelves in 1999. Last month, PEN named Philippe Wamba (J '94), as a finalist for the Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir for his book Kinship, (Dutton, August 1999) about relationships between Africans and African-Americans.
