The expanded competition was announced today by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) which has committed $3 million to stage the five day event from the 8 th th of January 2003. "Our first Olympic Festival in 2001 was a resounding success and more sports have been added this time round" said AOC Secretary General Bob Elphinston. "Such is the popularity of the AYOF 25 of the 28 summer Sports Federations wanted to participate and ultimately the AOC would like to include them all" he said. The new sports added to the 2003 program are Archery, Badminton, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Softball, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Water Polo, Weightlifting and Wrestling, "Badminton, Fencing, Judo and Wrestling are sports where we are less developed and looking to improve" Elphinston said. The AOC has invited all countries from the East Asian Region and it’s expected Australia’s future Olympians will compete against teams from China, Japan and South Korea. "These countries are the world super powers in many of those disciplines," he said.

Judo: Buernor retains title By Kwabena Agyei-Boahene JUDO Celebrity, David Buernor last Saturday put up a splendid performance to retain his title when he outclassed Emmanuel Lartey to win the 66kg senior class category of the Japan Ambassador’s Cup National Judo Championship at the Sports Hall at the Accra Stadium. Buernor had no problem as he lifted Lartey onto the ground in the early minutes of their challenge to end the encounter ahead of schedule. The victory make Buernor the undisputed champion in his category, a feat he has consolidated after winning bronze for the country in Scotland four years ago. The tournament which was sponsored by the Japan Embassy and the Ghana Judo Association underscored the high profile nature of judo in the country, as well as strengthen the sporting ties between Ghana and Japan. The event, also used to celebrate the Japanese week became the biggest judo tournament ever to take place in the country. In the 66kg class, Alex Amoako exhibited thrilling skills to dispose makes Emmanuel Nartey to clinch victory, while Richard Antwi placed third. After a keen contest in the 16-18 eyars category, Prosper Kudor defeated Osmanu Mohammed to take the gold medal, while Amadu Seidu won bronze for placing third.

This book surprised me at how good it was! It's a rare winning competitor who is also a competent instructor, and Dave Starbrook is apparently one of them. I found many interesting insights into Judo in this small book. Written very much in the style of Anton Geesink's book, or Yamashita's book; it is an autobiographical history of Starbrook's Judo. Many B/W photos, but the text is so good I found myself wishing for less photos and more text...

In this easy-to-follow and informative guide, Dave Starbrook, Britain's leading exponent of the sport, explains his techniques for success in judo. With the help of photographs and line drawings, he describes his favourite throws, attacking moves and combinations, his methods of groundwork, armlocks, strangleholds, defensive and counter moves. But judo is a sport in which each individual has to find the techniques which suit him best, and nobody knows this better than joint British team manager Dave Starbrook. So he also explains methods which other champion judoka (judo players) use, but which he found less rewarding.

A Biography of Jigoro Kano

Pub: 2000 by Kodansha

Even though I give this a Four Star rating, I must admit to being somewhat disappointed in this book. As the author states: "Since the chief aim of the book is to make the life of Jigoro Kano accessible to the widest possible audience, dialogue has been included, much of which has been re-created in the light of documented historical fact and the known personalities of the people involved." I must confess that I would have been much happier with a more scholarly approach to the biography of Jigoro Kano. There is so little available in English, that this could have been a most remarkable book. Instead, it simply makes fine reading, but nothing is annotated, and the "recreated" conversations throw doubt on what is true, and what is "recreated"... at least in my mind. There is, as well, some apparently incorrect 'history' in the book... as an example:
"From the early 1900s, he started to send some of his highest graded judo experts to foreign countries in order to teach Kodokan judo. For example, Mitsuyo Maeda went to Brazil in 1914 to teach Kodokan judo. One of his judo students, Helio Gracie, subsequently devised his own style, which he named Gracie Jujutsu."

Ozkan enjoys Olympic revenge
Chechen-born Huseyin Ozkan gave Turkey its first Olympic judo gold medal on Sunday, and Legna Verdecia underlined the depth of the Cuban challenge, as Japan's gold hunt in their own sport stalled in Sydney. Ozkan, said his under-66kg featherweight win over French world champion Larbi Benboudaoud would be celebrated not only in Turkey but also in Chechnya which he left in 1993. "My family still lives in Chechenya and I am also famous there," the 28-year-old Ozkan said. "My friends and my family are waiting for the news. But there is no television broadcasting in Chechenya. When they hear about this, they will be very happy." In Birmingham, the Frenchman caught me first and could execute his technique. Now we are even at 1-1

Ozkan, who lost to Benboudaoud in the world championship final last October, was slapped with a warning early in the final but threw his French opponent at one minute 44 seconds. Technique "In Birmingham, the Frenchman caught me first and could execute his technique," Ozkan said. "Now we are even at 1-1."

China Seeks Adjustment in Olympic Sports Structure
Having collected an unprecedented overhaul of 28 golds in Sydney Olympics, China aims for breakthrough outside those sports they keep perennial dominance over.
In Monday's meeting involving sporting chiefs across the country, decision-makers, targeting the 2004 Athens Games, decided to make some reasonable and minor changes to the Olympics sports structure while continuing to strengthen the dominance in favorite events.
As many as 26 golds in Sydney Olympics are from such sports as table tennis, badminton, diving, gymnastics, shooting, weightlifting and judo, all of which are traditional sources of medals for China in past major events. But in swimming, athletics and aquatic events, where a total of 119 golds are on offer, China becomes a minnow as they snatched only one gold in women's walking race and ended up without any medals in swimming pools. China also failed to earn Olympic berth in men's soccer, men's volleyball and women's basketball and had a poor Olympic showing in women's volleyball and men's basketball. China's women soccer, which finished runners-up in the 1996 Olympics and 1999 World Cup, did not even go beyond the group stage in Sydney.

While the samurai were highly important in feudal society, after peace was established by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the early 1600's, their fighting skills were diverted into more spiritual activities. The fighting arts were combined with Confucianism Shinto and Zen Buddhism as a means of spiritual as well as physical training. Over the years, the names changed also: kenjutsu , for example, meaning Sword Technique changed to kendo or the Way of the Sword to imply the spiritual discipline inherent in these arts. After the

GAICHI PERFORMANCE: Judo History The sport of judo traces back to the brutal hand-to-hand combat of the ancient Japanese samurai warriors. Literally meaning "soft way," judo was developed by Dr. Jigoro Kano in the early 1880s as a gentler alternative to the more dangerous martial arts. The sport preaches strict training to produce a mind and body in a state of harmony and balance. In Judo, the competitors or "judokas" employ specialized principles of movement, balance and leverage to:
  • Throw the opponent to the mat on his/her back
  • Immobilize or control an opponent on any part of his/her back
  • Apply arm bars, keeping in mind that joint locks other than the elbow constitute a serious rules violation
  • Choke the opponent while avoiding any action which might injure the neck or the spine of the opponent
Incoming force is often used by the defender to defeat an opponent. A perfect, full-point throw results in the end of the match. This perfect move is scored as an "ippon." Other incremental or lesser scores, such as waza-ari, yuko and koka, can be awarded. In its original version, breakdowns by weightclass played no part in the sport. The early theory claimed that the size of the competitor was irrelevant, since the key ingredients of judo are leverage and timing. Therefore, proponents of the sport believe that a small but skilled athlete could defeat a larger fighter. This theory changed in 1961 when the 6 1/2-foot, 253-pound Dutchman named Antonius Geesink won the world championships by crushing three Japanese fighters in consecutive rounds.
