KANSAS WORKS
MISSION
KANSAS WORKS - work program services exist to empower individuals and families to become more self-sufficient through employment; and to develop opportunities for present and future generations to escape dependence on public assistance.
FOUNDATION
  • Work programs support and reward work. Welfare recipients' greatest needs are re-connection to the job market and the opportunity to gain skills on the job. Program staff, recipients and applicants view cash assistance and Food Stamps as temporary programs which assist in transitioning to employment rather than as programs of continued economic assistance. Resources are maximized through the coordination of existing programs at all levels including government, community and business organizations. Participants have the ability and responsibility to utilize the program to improve their employability. Government support should not be provided to those unwilling to participate. The program targets families in economic crisis with supportive services and active help towards gaining (or regaining) strength. An emphasis on individual achievement through work program services sends a message to participants, especially young people, about the rewards of self-reliance and the direct connection between self-responsibility and their own economic success.

KSU HUMEC About Us Message from Dean Kellett The College of Human Ecology has been dedicated to the goal of enhancing the well-being of families and communities since 1873. From our roots as one of the first Domestic Science programs in a land grant university and many years of distinction in Home Economics to our current status as one of the leading programs in Human Ecology, we inherited a legacy of excellence from our founders and leaders. The faculty and staff in Human Ecology are dedicated to continuing the legacy of excellence by addressing the opportunities of the 21st century with great pride and a sense of purpose. Guided by our motto, In a world focused on things, we focus first on people, faculty members have been honored with national, state and university awards for excellence in teaching, research, academic advising, and professional service. We are at the forefront of research, teaching and learning, and outreach. The College is organized into four academic units. The three departments include Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design; Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management and Dietetics; and Human Nutrition. The School of Family Studies and Human Services comprises about half of the faculty and students in six program areas. Programs and courses in General Human Ecology are coordinated in the Dean’s Office.

Kansas City Accreditation Project
community-wide effort focused on improving the quality of early childhood care and education helped to create the Kansas City area Accreditation Project. This project is designed to improve the quality of child care programs in the Kansas City area by increasing the number of early childhood centers accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAFCC) and family child care providers accredited by the National Association for Family Child Care. This program is managed by Heart of America Family Services. When the Accreditation Project began in 1997, only 15 of 500 Kansas City metropolitan area early education programs were nationally accredited. Since that time the Accreditation Project has succeeded in rallying community support for improving the quality of all community early education programs and is well on its way to achieving these goals:
  • 100 NAEYC nationally accredited early education centers by the end of 2002
As of December 2001, support from the Accreditation Project generated these results:

Early Education
Outcome: All children enter school prepared to succeed ritical building blocks for a child's future include a healthy, nurtured start in life and early success as learners. Assuring children's positive development requires a comprehensive approach that is both family- and child-centered. Our Early Education investments focus on quality early education and parent and family support initiatives. The majority of our funding goes to programs and initiatives in the greater Kansas City area, and in the states of Kansas and Missouri.
Programs and Partnerships...
School Readiness We invest in efforts to improve the quality of early education programs through professional development of early education teachers and improving overall quality of center- and home-based programs through national accreditation efforts. We are working to increase the accountability of early education programs through research in order to track school readiness indicators among children entering kindergarten We are pursuing strategies to build the public will and to advocate for the financing and sustainability of quality programs.
Early Care and Education Collaborative

The Collaborative's purpose is to design and implement strategic public education strategies aimed at creating the public will in each of the target states to expand both the supply and the quality of early care and education resources. Further, the Collaborative will share "lessons learned" on this unique partnership with the broader child care community.
