American FactFinder (U.S. Census) Kansas, the "Sunflower State" Abbreviation: KS Kansas is derived from the Siouan Kansa or Kaw, meaning "people of the south wind," who lived south of the settlements of the northern Great Plains. It was granted statehood in 1861, becoming the 34th state in the US. Kansas is located equidistant from the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean. The geographic center of Northamerica is located in Osborne County. This spot is used as the central reference point for all maps produced by the government. Kansas leads the states in wheat production. In early summer, the vast wheat fields on the state's prairies look like golden seas of grain. One of Kansas' most famous towns is Dodge City, the Cowboy Capital of the World. Kansas has many reminders of its colorful past. One can still see the ruts made by covered wagons on the Santa Fe Trail. Tourists can visit the old forts that served as bases for United States cavalry campaigns against Native American tribes and a variety of local museums, showing the exciting days of cattle drives and gunslingers.

References Geography Topography and Drainage Thomas County lies entirely within the area designated by Fenneman (1931) as the High Plains section of the Great Plains physiographic province. The county consists of nearly flat to gently rolling uplands broken by relatively shallow valleys. The upland-plains surface generally slopes eastward at a rate of somewhat more than 12 feet to the mile. The lowest point in the county is along the valley of Prairie Dog creek where that stream crosses the Sheridan county line, and has an altitude of about 2,845 feet. The highest area in the county is along the Sherman county line south of Brewster where the upland surface attains an altitude of as much as 3,375 feet. Although the general region of which Thomas County is a part is called the High Plains, it has some of the features of a plateauthat is, it is essentially a flat upland surface that stands distinctly above the surrounding regions. The High Plains are terminated eastward in parts of central Kansas by an escarpment produced by the eroded edge of the Fort Hays limestone member of the Niobrara chalk. At some places a second east-facing escarpment, produced by the loosely cemented conglomerates of the Ogallala formation, occurs to the west of the outcrop of the Fort Hays. A less distinct west-facing escarpment, also formed by the eroded edge of the Ogallala formation, can be seen due west of Thomas County in eastern Colorado. South of Thomas County the High Plains upland stands above the dissected area comprising the Smoky Hill valley.

That's what human geography is finally about. You could say that we're looking at pattern now, rather than process. Or you could say that we're looking at the visible consequences of all the activities we've been tracing. I want to begin with American cities, because they're the places we know best. What comes to mind with this topic? One thing is downtown, that cluster of skyscrapers that immigrants first saw from the decks of liners coming into New York's harbor.
