ISSUE 10: Educating Faculty on Scholarly Communication Issues
September 1999
Introduction: From the Editor Welcome to the website for issue #10 of Transforming Libraries . In this issue, we focus on the process of educating faculty about scholarly communication issues, a topic of vital interest for academic libraries. The issue is the product of interviews with 23 information professionals in 21 ARL libraries. Most interviewees were ARL library directors. As in previous issues of Transforming Libraries , the Reports from the Field section highlights individual libraries' noteworthy approaches to the featured topic. Synopses of these reports are provided below; see the print edition of this issue for the full reports. Also included in the print edition are a summary of interview findings and a checklist for assessing a library's program in educating faculty. George J. Soete , Editor
Educating Faculty on Scholarly Communication Issues: Reports from the Field
Johns Hopkins University
James Neal, Director of Johns Hopkins University Libraries, has used every available means of connecting with the Libraries' environment on scholarly communication issues. Even a partial list of connections suggests that he and his staff have been very busy indeed. Key to their effort is the Faculty Advisory Committee for the Libraries, which has helped pave the way for educational undertakings. Within the Libraries, Neal regularly briefs his management team on scholarly communication issues, and all-staff exchanges are held monthly.

by Don Coldsmith

Imagine the excitement, the thrill, the drama and the fun of a Methodist revival in small town Kansas. And imagine what it is like for an 11-year-old boy named Edwin J. Stamford, who gets blamed for just about everything. And who has a tattle-tale for a sister. And what it's like trying to grow up in the midst of a religious conflict that reminds us of coming of age in small town Kansas. Max Yoho brings us this story with delightful insight, wry wit and the realism of experience. Retired from his first career, Yoho has launched a new one as a creative writer. After a number of published poems and short stories, he has produced THE REVIVAL, his first novel. Don Coldsmith has called it "somewhere between HUCKLEBERRY FINN and Booth Tarkington's PENROD AND JASPER." It is clearly a regional novel, filled with scenes familiar not only to maturing young men but also to many who have Protestant, small town Kansas roots. Yoho is obviously familiar with his subject and tells a rip-roaring, entertaining, fast-paced story.

KANSAS STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM EASY ONLINE SEARCHING AS KANSAS LIBRARIES GAIN ACCESS TO SIRS DISCOVERER DELUXE Boca Raton, FL, November 10, 2000 - Online information searching has become easier for Kansas students as nearly 1,800 Kansas libraries recently gained access to the SIRS Discoverer Deluxe general reference database. SIRS Discoverer Deluxe is available through Blue Skyways (www.skyways.org), a service of the Kansas State Library that provides Kansas citizens with easy access to global information resources. Statewide access to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe is provided for all public libraries, schools, universities and colleges. Between 400,000 and half a million users will benefit from SIRS Discoverer Deluxe. According to Marc Galbraith, Director of the Kansas State Library's Reference Services Division, access to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe brings Blue Skyways one step closer to creating a comprehensive library of online resources. "The Kansas State Library and the Reference Networking Committee are very pleased to provide our citizens, and especially our young people, with access to SIRS Discoverer Deluxe, an educational, informative and age-appropriate tool," Galbraith said. The decision to purchase SIRS Discoverer stems from the state's search for a database addressing the needs of students in grades 1-9. "Kansas school children are expected to find quality information resources to complete school assignments, and they need the experience of using computers and online exploration to solve problems," said Galbraith. SIRS Discoverer Deluxe's "multi-faceted, colorful and fun" interface helped the database clinch a place among the Kansas State Library's existing online resources.
