Stepping outside the box Berea's student teachers get alternative experience By Donna Morgan, '89 Berea boasts over 3,140 alumni educators, with over 80% serving in the Appalachian region In the early 1990s, with an eye to upcoming trends in public education, department faculty conducted a review of their teacher training program and formulated a portfolio-driven model, which was instituted in the mid-1990s. The new program requires that students keep a portfolio which, through self-examination and recording of experience, provides evidence of the students’ progress in becoming qualified teachers. The focus on a portfolio strongly supports the department’s theory on learning, which is expressed in one of their goals for beginning teachers: "an understanding that authentic learning requires experience (direct and vicarious), inquiry, time, interest, self-correction and external criticism." The portfolio model is derived partly from the Kentucky Education Reform Act, which set high standards for licensing educators. The model and its standards are also accepted in states outside Kentucky, due to similar performance standards developed by the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium.

Weatherization Assistance CFC Press Release FRYSCs play vital role at high-achieving schools Frankfort, Ky. (April 3, 2001) Through his years in junior high school, "Jake" came to school in shabby clothes and struggled in special education classes. Then Charlotte Kilburn, director of the Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) at Lost Creek Elementary School in Perry County, drew a connection between his poor appearance and poor school performance. And she did something about it. She arranged for him to get new clothes. Wearing them, Jake developed a new attitude toward school. He studied more and engaged in more social activities. "We helped the child by building his self-esteem," said Kilburn. "He had so much pride, he wouldn’t ask for help. He never had snack money but he wouldn’t let the teacher give him money unless he worked for it, so he cleaned chalk boards, or desks, et cetera." Best of all, she said, Jake set himself a goal: to get out of special education before he entered high school. "He succeeded, and he will graduate from high school this spring," Kilburn said.

Feature topics WHERE ARE YOU? Personal computing Software Features IT for children's special needs By John Rennie and Jane McCarthy Computers have revolutionised the classroom. Image-editing, spreadsheets, email, the internet and the rest have hugely enriched the learning process; the web alone opens a global encyclopaedia for kids to dip in to. For pupils with special educational needs though, the barriers to this world can seem daunting. What use is the internet to a child whose limited dexterity makes it tough to hit a key or click a mouse?

Outlines commitment to students and adults with disabilities in 13 th stop on national tour
    FOR RELEASE:
July 8, 2002 Contact: Dan Langan
    Kathleen Mynster
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today made the 13th stop on his tour across America, continuing his efforts to build awareness of the historic No Child Left Behind Act and rally Americans to help implement this new law. Paige addressed the national meeting of the National Federation of the Blind in Louisville, Ky. "Our president believes there are no limits to what can be achieved when all Americans have the opportunity to learn, live independently, and pursue their dreams," Paige said. "During his first month in office, the president unveiled his New Freedom Initiative to improve access for children and adults with disabilities including the blind to education and work and the means of achieving their greatest potential. And the Department of Education has a role to play." Paige noted that the Department of Education not only helps to ensure that disabled children receive a free appropriate public education, but also helps to remove barriers to employment and improve opportunities for adults with disabilities.
