Another section, Insects All Year, presents monthly topics with background information and activities. For May, students are invited to plant a butterfly garden. The background information explains that nectar preferences vary among the species of butterflies and provides photographic images of a variety of plants to include in the garden, as well as photos of different butterfly species. Bug Fun contains instructions for collecting insects and for creating a classroom habitat for them, as well as insect stories and arts and crafts. The Insect Stories page contains articles about a variety of topics, including some of the unique adaptations among insects, a comparison of dangerous and not so dangerous insects, and songs inspired by insects. The web site also offers recipes for insect-themed foods, a mystery bug identification quiz, and a bibliography of books and related web resources. Abstracted 3/22/01 (Author/LCT)

    Parent Role
The idea that parents play a vital role in their children's literacy development is not new. Edmond Huey, in 1908 wrote as follows: The child makes endless questionings about the names of things, as every mother knows. He is concerned also about the printed notices, signs, titles, visiting cards, etc., that come in his way, and should be told what they are when he makes inquiry. It is surprising how large a stock of printed or written words a child will gradually come to recognize in this way. In 1934, Nila B. Smith acknowledged that early reading is taught at home rather than at school. Current literacy research, reported by Teale (1981), Doake (1981), Haussler (1982), and Taylor (1983), indicates not only that the amount of adult-child reading and writing interaction before school is important, but also that the quality of the interactions makes a difference. Parents' attitudes toward literacy, the time they spend interacting with children and print, and the accessibility of literacy materials in the home (such as newspapers, books, chalkboards, paper and writing implements) influence children's reading and writing development.

THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Researchers and educators have long agreed that when parents get involved in education, children try harder and achieve more at school (e.g., Epstein, 1995). Parents who help and encourage their children to learn at home, and who help develop positive attitudes toward school, contribute to the personal growth and academic success of their children. Various approaches have been developed to help schools gain greater parent involvement. These approaches have several features in common: programs that focus on parenting skills and the development of home conditions that support learning; school-to-home and home-to-school communication about school programs and children's progress; the use of volunteers at school or in other locations to support the school and students; and participation by families in decision-making, governance, and advocacy (Bauch, 1994; Davies, 1991).

The project's goal is for the 50 children of the parents in training by June, 2001, to have I.E.P.'s for the 2002-2003 school year with at least 80% of the school day in inclusive settings. Training's will focus on (a) the child's right to an inclusive education, (b) benefits of inclusion, (c) barriers that must be addressed for success, (d) process the school uses in seeking changes, and (e) resources. The Arc of Kentucky is seeking applications from interested parents of students currently attending public school and receiving their education services primarily in segregated special education settings. These students must be ages 5-20.

"This is the most valuable thing I've ever done with my students," one middle school teacher wrote about the "Million Words" assignment. "I've built an instant bond with parents," said another. Here's how it works: The teacher sends a note home with students asking parents to "tell us about your child in a million words or less." Just about every teacher on the MiddleWeb Listserv who tried this idea was amazed by the breadth and depth of the response and the valuable insights they gained into their students' lives. Read this archived conversation, which includes a link to one teacher's actual letter to parents WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL REFORM
"The challenge of the middle grades is to devote equal attention both to students' affective needs and to their academic needs," school reform advocate Hayes Mizell says in this public lecture sponsored by the Nyack NY Partners in Education. "Achieving these results is not easy," Mizell admits, "but schools are more likely to achieve them if they partner with parents." What are parents' appropriate roles in middle school reform? Mizell offers some answers, drawing on many web-based resources which are linked to this important article.
