Louisville, Kentucky
Dear Postcard Geography Friends, Hello, from Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky. We are located on the Ohio River, but there is no beach along the river. We do enjoy boating, skiing and fishing. The Kentucky Derby, a horse race, is held at Churchill Downs the first Saturday of May. There are 2 weeks of fun before this event, with a parade, balloon race, steamboat race and huge fireworks show. Low rolling hills are seen in the south and east of our city. Four bridges connect Kentucky to Indiana. Our average temperature is 35 F to 78 F. We average 42" of rain. Rich tobacco and champion race horses have long been symbols of Kentucky. We are called the Bluegrass State for the dusty blue flowers seen in grassy fields. Top Postcard Index Home

Additionally there are manuscripts and published copies of several of his many publications including Geography of Kentucky and Oil and Gas Resources of Kentucky Jillson was born May 28, 1890, in Syracuse, New York where as a youth he was greatly interested in natural science, geography, and travel. His undergraduate degree (Syracuse 1912) was followed by a Masters at the University of Washington (State) in 1915 and further studies at the University of Chicago and Yale. He was awarded honorary doctorates by Syracuse University in 1921 and Berea College, 1925. A central theme connecting these research projects is a concern for how place is shaped, by whom, and in whose interests (and at whose expense). Empirical foci range from urban growth management and landscape preservation, to urban street protest and the changing shape of the built environment in US cities. PREFACE TO THE REVISED EDITION (1991) This revised edition of Thomas P. Field's A Guide to Kentucky Place Names, originally published in 1961 by the Kentucky Geological Survey, has been prepared to meet the continuing demand for a relatively comprehensive gazetteer of Kentucky's place names. The basis for the original publication was well stated by Professor Field in his preface for that edition, which is included here. The current revision began in 1989. By that time the supply of the 1961 edition had been sold out. The continuing demand for a comprehensive gazetteer of the State's place names was sufficient to make a reissue or revision desirable. When approached for advice and assistance on the project, Professor Field, Emeritus since 1982, graciously provided his annotated copy of the guide, which contained many minor and major changes that had come to his attention since 1961. Mr. Edward Norman Wilson, formerly of the Kentucky Geological Survey, and Dr. William Adriance Withington, Professor Emeritus, Department of Geography, University of Kentucky, both interested in Kentucky's place names and close friends of Tom Field, offered additional suggestions for this revision. A few major changes have been made in the way information is presented in the revised edition of this guide in order to make it easier to use. All county names and identifying terms in place names, which were abbreviated in the original edition, have been spelled out in the revised edition. Also, the use of reference numbers, which were keyed to a listing in the front of the book, to identify map names or information sources has been eliminated. This information is spelled out in each entry, thereby facilitating use of the guide. These changes were made by Margaret L. Smath, who deserves a great deal of credit for her untiring efforts.
