Newspapers
The University of Kentucky Libraries King Library Reprographics Department does all the microfilming of newspapers for the state of Kentucky and participated in the National Endowment for the Humanities National Newspaper Microfilming project from 1987-1991. Due to that project they filmed almost 1.5 million pages of newspapers pre-1900 dates and are the holders of over 25,000 reels of 35mm microfilm for all Kentucky counties and these go back as far as 1787. They can make copies of any of these reels for purchase. They have a computerized database according to each county, which lists the city, title of the newspaper, dates on the reel and the price. Anyone can request a list according to which county they are interested in and we will get it out to them as soon as possible. They are gradually getting these county lists online and we will add the Southeast Kentucky County links as they get online. Those interested can request via e-mail or snail mail and the usual response time for a list request is 24 hour turn around. List requests are available at no cost. When ordering microfilm, it depends on the number of reels ordered. Usually, 2-4 weeks, or if it is a large order (50 or more reels) count on 6+ weeks. The customer will be invoiced with their film order so they do not have to put down a deposit or send money at the time they order film. The price is calculated per number of feet per reel. A full reel is 100 feet and the cost is $27.00. (or .27 per foot). Some reels are as small as 10 feet, this is usually 1 issue (that may have been the only material we had at the time of filming for that particular title. There are also some miscellaneous reels that have as many as 30 titles on a single reel. These are usually single issues and not a complete run.

(Miko) Pattie When Charles T. Wethington Jr. took the helm of the University of Kentucky in 1990, he announced that academic excellence would be his top priority and a new library building would serve as a statement toward that end. A $5 million gift from local businessman, philanthropist and alumnus William T. Young helped kick off a statewide library building and NEH Challenge Fund campaign, which yielded more than $22 million and involved 15,000 donors. The Kentucky General Assembly authorized the university to proceed with design and site work in 1992 but failed to provide construction funds as expected in 1994. An innovative financing plan involving the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, the UK National Alumni Association, the UK Athletics Association and the Kentucky Medical Services Foundation was devised to secure the sale of bonds to complete funding for the construction. The ground was broken on Dec. 6, 1994.

Virtual Library courier service to boost interlibrary loans
Citizens across the Commonwealth now have more timely and reliable delivery of interlibrary loans, thanks to a free ground courier service provided by the Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual Library. The KCVL negotiated the contract on behalf of 182 of the state?s public and educational institution libraries. The service went into effect Aug. 3. The library-to-library delivery service makes it possible for a resident serviced by a small library to request a book or resource from a larger library and have it delivered to the requesting library in as little as 24 hours. "This is one of the KCVL initiatives to make information resources easily and quickly accessible to all Kentuckians," explained Ling-yuh W. (Miko) Pattie, the director of the KCVL. Prior to the contract, some libraries had to set limits on the number of interlibrary loans or pass the cost on to the consumer because they were confined by their own budgets to pay shipping costs. Jackie Griffitts, assistant library director of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library in West Liberty, said the courier service allowed her library to lift the $1 fee assessed on interlibrary loans.

Kentucky Virtual Library Earns Outstanding Library Award
FRANKFORT, KY (May 15, 2001) - The Kentucky Virtual Library, at www.kyvl.org, was recently named the Outstanding Library Program of the Southeast by the Southeastern Library Network (Solinet). As the largest regional library network in the United States, Solinet represents over 800 libraries in 10 southeastern states and the Caribbean. The Kentucky Virtual Library, established in November 1999, received the Multitype Library Cooperation Award for its initiatives that foster cooperation among Kentucky libraries. The state's participating libraries include 116 public libraries, 36 public universities and colleges, 19 independent universities and colleges, more than 1,200 K-12 schools and 22 special libraries. "Solinet is pleased to be able to recognize the good work of the Kentucky Virtual Library with this award. The Kentucky Virtual Library is a leader in serving the information needs of a wide range of users, with creative and innovative programming," said Kate Nevins, executive director of Solinet. Miko Pattie, director of the virtual library, added, "This award is a tribute to the state's librarians who have worked hard to make the KYVL a reality. Our goal is to level the playing field to quality information resources for all Kentuckians."
