KENYA GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP October 2002
A personal view
At half term 19 A level Geographers and three staff went on a 9-day visit to Kenya. The aim was experience its natural environment, to learn about the level of development of the country and to have fun. I think we managed to do all three!! This was a return visit to the Taita Discovery Centre(TDC) in SE Kenya. The department took out a smaller group in 2000 and wanted to return to this magical remote area to see how things had changed in the last two years. Judging from the response the 2000 trip was highly thought of amongst the students. There were some changes - many not that desirable. It seems that Kenya, like many other LEDCs is trapped in downward spiral of poverty, debt and corruption. Nairobi seems to epitomise all these aspects, especially since the decline of tourism in the 1980s. We only stayed here two nights but the feeling was that of general unease and dissatisfaction. There were few visible improvements since our visit in 2000, although the drought that had caused power cuts then, seemed to have abated in this part of Africa at least. This time our visit coincided with the run up to the elections. The president, Arap Moi, who appears universally disliked is stepping down. There is a sense that things might improve now - I hope this does not end up in disappointment. One wonders how much more the young Kenyan population will put up with before desperation leads to some form of revolution.

Click here to read Karen Blixen’s famous description of Kenya in her classic Out of Africa The hunter’s "Big Five" are also now the "Big Five" for every traveler who goes on safari to Kenya – Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros, African Buffalo, and Leopard. In Swahili, the lingua franca of East Africa, the "Big Five" are known as – tembo, simba, faru, nyati, and chui. As the fastest mammal on earth it is a rare treat to see a cheetah on the move. Cheetahs have been timed accelerating from a standing start to a speed of 45 miles per hour in two seconds and covering 65 yards in that time. Within another few seconds it can be running at 70 miles per hour (a greyhound’s top speed is about 39 miles per hour and race horse’s 47.5). Kenya Book and Video Selections

Wildebeest are the most numerous large animal in East Africa, and the annual migrations of these ungainly animals through Tanzania and Kenya is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. The fossil evidence suggests that the wildebeest emerged at about the same time that our hominid ancestors began to walk upright - when the savannah grasslands developed about 3.5 million years ago. Kenya's ecology is balanced on a knife's edge. The population is rising at a rate of 3.8 percent per year - the highest growth rate in the world - and the majority of the population is under the age of fifteen. Polygamous families with three or four wives and as many as twelve children are not uncommon. The evidence accumulated over the last few decades points increasingly to Kenya and Ethiopia as having been the "Cradle of Mankind." Kenya is also a cultural microcosm of Africa, with three major language groups binding together the cultural tapestry of more than forty distinct ethnic groups. Kenya Book and Video Selections

Africa Homepage Geographia Homepage K enya is still the primary focus of all adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finestand undoubtedly the most famoussafari destination in the world. Safari , however, is by no means the only reason to visit Kenya, for the attractions of its rich culture and diverse environments are considerable. Kenya is situated right along the equator, on the eastern coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is on the southeast, and to the east lies Somalia. Ethiopia is to the north, the Sudan to the northwest, and Uganda directly to the west. The southwestern border of the country is marked by Lake Victoria, and southward lies Tanzania. Kenya's geography is marvelously varied. While much of northeastern Kenya is a flat, bush-covered plain, the remainder of the country encompasses pristine beaches, scenic highlands and lake regions, the Great Rift Valley, and the magnificent Mount Kenya. Although Kenya's varied environments experience a wide variety of climate conditions, the temperature remains comfortably warm year-round. Much of Kenya experiences heavy rainfall from March through May and, to a lesser extent, from October through December. The best time for most outdoor acitivities (including safari and mountain climbing) is during the dry season (June-September).

    Kenya - Geography
Kenya covers an area of 582,646 square kilometres. The land stretches from the sea level (Indian Ocean) in the east, to 5,199 meters at the peak of the snow-capped Mount Kenya. From the coast, the altitude changes gradually through the coastal belt and plains (below 152 metres above sea level), the dry intermediate low belt to what is known as the Kenya Highlands (over 900 metres above sea level). The monotony of terrain in the low belt is broken by residual hills, masses of broken boulders and inselbergs. Settlement is confined to places where water can be found. Wildlife are masters of the greater part of the low belt. The famous Amboseli Game Reserve and Tsavo National Parks are situated here. The Great Rift Valley bisects the Kenya Highlands into east and west. Mount Kenya is on the eastern side. The Highlands are cool and agriculturally rich. Both large and small holder farming is carried out in the highlands. Major cash crops are tea, coffee, pyrethrum, wheat and corn. Livestock farming is also practised. The Lake Victoria Basin is dominated by Kano plains which are suited for farming through irrigation. The northern part of Kenya is plain and arid. Pastoralism is the main land use activity. However, a variety of food crops do well through irrigation.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Ethnic divisions account for many of Kenya's problems. During the early 1990s, tribal clashes killed thousands and left tens of thousands homeless. Ethnically split opposition groups allowed the regime of Daniel Toroitich arap MOI, in power since 1978, to be reelected for a fourth term in 1997 in balloting marred by violence and fraud. Area The total area of Kenya is 224,960 square miles; almost 5,200 sq. miles of this total takes the form of fresh water, mainly in Lake Rudolf. Location Kenya is positioned on the equator on Africa's east coast. Its northernmost and southernmost points are approximately equidistanta little over 40 north and south of the equator. Kenya shares borders with five other countries. The perimeter of Kenya's international land borders is 3,446 km., including borders with Sudan (306 km), Ethiopia (779 km), Somalia (682 km), Tanzania (769 km), and Uganda (772 km). Kenya's eastern and northern neighbors are Somalia and Ethiopia. To the northwest lies the Sudan. Many inhabitants of the Sudan's border region are in fact ethnically related to Kenya `s peoples. To the west lies Uganda and to the south, Tanzania, both nations that share with Kenya a history of British colonial rule. Geographical Regions The country is commonly divided into seven major geographic regions, as follows. The Coastal Region extends some 250 miles from the southern border where Kenya meets Tanzania, to the border with Somalia in the north. This region is characterized by a variety of geographical features, a variety that is particularly pronounced as one travels south or north. The southern shoreline consists largely of stretches of coral rock and sand interrupted by bays, inlets, and branched creeks. Following the coast is a barrier reef that is broken only rarely. Traveling inland from the coast, one encounters a narrow plain, and later a low plateau area reaching an elevation of about 500 feet, and, finally, a line of discontinuous ridges. The principal geographic feature of the northern part of the region is the Lamu Archipelago, which was formed when a rise in the ocean level inundated coastal lands.
