October 25, 2002: Hour Two, Part 2: Rosalind Franklin Program Summary Guests Related Articles and Links For Discussion ... SFKC Home Program Summary In 1962, British scientists James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in recognition of their work in mapping the structure of DNA. Not mentioned, however, was a young Englishwoman without whose research the other three would never have achieved such a pinnacle. Rosalind Franklin, who died of cancer in 1958 at the age of 37, produced the first clear photograph of the double helix using a technique called x-ray crystallography. Watson and Crick used the photograph without Franklin’s knowledge to advance their own studies, and they published their results before Franklin had the chance. Rosalind Franklin’s contribution to DNA mapping was ignored for decades. Many people feel this snub was due to the misogynist attitude of the scientific world of that day as well as Franklin’s abrasive personality. Times have changed, though. The x-ray crystallography laboratory at London’s Birkbeck College is named after her, and Britain’s Royal Society has this year created the Rosalind Franklin Award, to be given to scientists who have made significant contributions to science, engineering, and technology. Update Log
This section of my web site contains information on my latest hobby, model rockets. Up until the end of 1998, my boys and I had only built Estes kits and scratch-built rockets from Estes parts with engines up to D-size. We started flexing our rocket muscles in 1999. I have built a cluster rocket (a modified Estes Shadow ) that can hold up to 5 engines, with a total impulse in the lower range of F. I have also built my first true high power rocket, . This 46-inch-tall, 4-inch-diameter rocket has an auto-winding 35 mm camera in the payload bay and a 29 mm engine mount. It has been flown numerous times on F-motors: Aerotech single-use F25-4W and F50-4T, Aerotech F40-4W RMS; and NCR F62-4 and F62-6 Dark Stars. On June 11, 2000, I flew it on an Aerotech H97J-S reload in a Dr. Rockets 29/240 RMS casing for my Level 1 High Power certification flight. The hyperlinks on the left, below Rockets , will take you to my other rocket-related pages.

(I am told that made me the prime candidate for captain, but I managed to avoid it.) Besides the bicycles, and this team web page, I build musical instruments, ring churchbells, take pictures with a plate camera, and read entirely too much. More details

Contests For Kids Competition among equally prepared peers can be fun and challenging to children and teens with competitive natures. No child should be forced to enter a contest that doesn't interest him or her. These contests encourage the participation of homeschoolers, but may have restrictions because of age or location. Since contests require registration, kids, ask your parent's permission before entering. Contests being held in one state only will be listed on that state's page . Participation usually requires dedication and preparation and offers some kind of real prize as a reward to winners. Websites not meeting these criteria are considered "games" and listed elsewhere in Explorations 4 Kids. Awards from these contests can be used when filling out college applications, in the "Academic Awards" section.
