Program Summaries
Family-Community Safe Schools Program Summary Additional Information S chool Safety and Violence Prevention Act. This entitlement program provides a total of $82 million for school safety. These funds, allocated to school districts and county offices of education that maintain any of grades 8 through 12, are to be used for strategies such as hiring student support services personnel trained in conflict resolution, providing on campus communication devices, creating staff training programs, and establishing cooperative arrangements with law enforcement. Districts receive funds based on one of three methods: the number of pupils enrolled, a minimum of $5,000 per school site, or $10,000 per school district/county office of education, whichever is greater.

INJURY PREVENTION: A Role in Prevention
Some Thoughts to Start

PHTLS Injury Prevention Programs

It is a recognized precept that the term "accident" is a misnomer and that injuries are preventable. While the stated purpose of PHTLS is to provide the prehospital provider with the tools to enable effective trauma management to begin at the scene, PHTLS is also cognizant that prevention can be responsible to alleviate the burden of traumatic injury amongst the masses. As EMS providers, we may hold the most effective positions with which to place at the forefront of the preventative field. We have, after all, seen the consequences of traumatic injury. And whom better to educate those groups most afflicted by trauma, than the very people who serve to provide initial care. There are many ways that you can become involved in the prevention movement. We hope that this page will provide you with some of the tools that can help facilitate your interest in a particular area. Or at the very least, give you some ideas as to where to begin.

SAFE KIDS
National SAFE KIDS was the first national non-profit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury. Unintentional injury is still the number one killer of America’s children, taking more lives than disease, violence and suicide. In 1999 alone, nearly 6,000 children died from unintentional injuries, and each year more than 14 million children –– a staggering 1 out of 4 –– are injured seriously enough to require medical attention. The campaign addresses these major areas:
  • traffic incidents (motor vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle) fires and burns drowning and near-drowning falls poisonings choking, suffocation, and strangulation farm injuries unintentional firearm injuries
SAFE KIDS Florida
An estimated 4 million Florida children (1 out of 4), ages 14 and under, will sustain injuries serious enough to require medical attention each year. SAFE KIDS Florida is part of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign and the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, is the lead organization for the statewide coalition. The coalition membership includes a cross-section of public health officials, health care providers, firefighters, EMS, educators, and business professionals. There are currently 11 local SAFE KIDS coalitions and one state SAFE KIDS chapter located throughout Florida.

Goals and objectives for the 2003 Kids Agenda are:
EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE AND EDUCATION
To improve the development and school readiness of low-income children birth to age 5. Support initiatives that efficiently and effectively increase the quality of early childhood education, and promote the development of school readiness indicators. Work with the Consolidated Child Care Pilot communities to develop their programs and increase awareness about their innovative work focused on reducing barriers and achieving high-quality care.
