Systems Group 2000 - 2001 Fact Sheet Title IV-Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Description On October 20, 1994, the President signed into law the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA) of 1994, Public Law 103-382, which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of (ESEA) of 1965. The Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) of 1994 as Title IV, Part A of the IASA became effective on July 1, 1995. The SDFSCA is a critical part of the national systemic reform effort. It creates a comprehensive Federal effort in support of the seventh National Education Goal that all schools will be free of alcohol, drugs, violence, and the presence of firearms, and offer a disciplined environment conducive to learning by the year 2000. The Department of Alcohol and Drug Prevention Programs also receives funds from the SDFSCA to support community efforts to keep youth drug and alcohol free. The mission of the Healthy Kids Program Office (HKPO) is to provide leadership to keep youth alcohol, tobacco and other drugs free. Successful drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention, intervention and cessation programs are part of this effort. Overview Drug and violence prevention programs are essential components of a comprehensive learning support system that supports academic achievement for all students. When her teacher called home to find out how the child was doing, she learned that the girl had fallen and hurt her foot so badly that she could not walk on it. Although both her parents worked, the family had no health insurance and did not know where or how to obtain medical care for her, so they kept her at home, hoping her injury would heal. The family eagerly accepted assistance from Partnership for Healthier Kids, which provided the necessary referrals. The little girl got the treatment she needed for her broken foot and returned to school. Program Description - Inova Health System's Partnership for Healthier Kids is an intensive prevention and care coordination program focused on schools, families and neighborhoods. AK Public Health Injury Surveillance And Prevention Program (ISAPP) DESCRIPTION: The Alaska Injury Prevention Program consists of an active network of individuals from a broad spectrum of the public and state and federal agencies who work to apply education, enforcement and engineering efforts to combat the number one killer of Alaskans under age 45. In 1995 an Injury Prevention Plan for Alaska was published, intended to bring Alaskans up-to-date regarding the injury epidemic. Alaska leads the nation in overall unintentional injuries and deaths from injuries. The areas of concern are boating and drowning fatalities, fire and burns, falls, small aircraft crashes, occupational and child injuries. Alaska's suicide rate among young males is over 10 times the national average.
