Introduction Dermatologists of The Los Angeles Metropolitan Dermatological Society are alarmed by the epidemic of skin cancer in this country. This year more than one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer. 9,800 will die from it. The incidence of malignant melanoma, the most deadly of common skin cancers, has been increasing at a rate faster than for any other type of cancer. We clearly have a very serious problem and one which is getting worse. Why are so many skin cancers occurring? Studies have shown that childhood sun damage, particularly sunburning, is mostly to blame. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that the average person acquires 80% of his/her lifetime total sun exposure prior to age 18. A peer-reviewed statistical analysis concludes that 78% of skin cancers could be prevented by sun avoidance and sun protection during childhood. While sunlight has many obvious beneficial effects in nature, it can wreak havoc with human skin. The only known health benefit of sunlight on the skin is its role in the body's manufacture of active Vitamin D. It certainly is important for everyone, especially children, to maintain a sufficient level of Vitamin D but it's not necessary to risk skin cancer by relying on sun exposure to do so. The American diet provides Vitamin D in fortified dairy products and other fortified foods. Alternatively, a daily multivitamin containing Vitamin D can be taken. Brittany Project Please Be Seated - Initiated in 1992, this program allows concerned citizens to report moving vehicles carrying unrestrained children. Patterned after a program in Virginia, the program allows motorists to carry Please Be Seated postcards in their vehicles and use them to report non-compliant drivers. The postcards request the tag number of the vehicle, date and time of reported offense, and number and ages of unrestrained children. The owner of the vehicle receives a packet with information on the importance of buckling up children and child passenger safety resources. Wednesday April 9, 2003 Search: News March 2003 - Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Philadelphia Local study makes national media worthy presentation at the Pediatric Academic Society conference The Helmets for High Risk Riders program has been a signature helmet safety activity of IFCK Philadelphia since 2000. Through this program, children who come to the Hospital emergency department as a result of an injury while cycling, skate boarding, or scootering receive a personally fitted helmet as well as developmentally appropriate education on safe riding and playing strategies. In the summer of 2002, David Holtzman added a survey to the program to collect information on the attitudes children and their parents have about helmet use, and nonuse. Health and Safety for Kids on the Farm Farming is one of the most dangerous industries in the United States. Yet injury, illness, and death on the farm are not restricted to adults. Each year, approximately 100,000 children under 20 years of age are injured on farms and over 100 are killed. Approximately 1.5 million children under the age of 20 live, work, or have a regular presence on farms in the United States. Included in this total are children of farm families, farm workers, and migrant and seasonal workers. These children are exposed daily to many farm hazards including tractors, farm machinery, pesticides, and livestock. Until now, there has been no national coordinated effort to protect young people in the production agriculture industry. Even the data used in this fact sheet are estimates, based on inadequate surveillance systems which provide little information about the causes and consequences of injury, and may underestimate the problem. Realizing this, Congress provided funding for a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiative to prevent agricultural injury and death among children. The initiative builds on previous NIOSH research and on recommendations from a national action plan for child agriculture safety and health which was produced by a broad-based coalition of researchers, farmers, agricultural groups, safety and health professionals, and government officials. The NIOSH initiative will address critical data needs; establish an infrastructure which facilitates the use of data to develop and improve upon prevention efforts; and encourage the use of effective prevention strategies by the private and public sectors.
