    Assessing Your Child
    The auditory learner

    Preschool to Kindergarten
by S. Jhoanna Robledo What's below: What is an auditory learner? What are the benefits of knowing my child's learning style? What can I do to help my auditory child excel at preschool and kindergarten? How can I address my auditory child's weaknesses in other areas? ... Where can I get more information about learning styles? What is an auditory learner?
Auditory learners understand new ideas and concepts best when they hear the information. If you peek into a classroom, they're the ones who learn a tune in a snap just from hearing their teacher sing it, or who can follow directions to the letter after being told only once or twice what to do. Other auditory learners concentrate better at a task when they have music or white noise in the background, or retain new information better when they talk it out. If you haven't already, take our learning styles quiz to find out for sure if your child is an auditory learner. What are the benefits of knowing my child's learning style?

    http://comsewogue.k12.ny.us/~rstewart/k2001/Kpals/kindergarten_pals.htm
    Kindergarten PALS
(Partners Assisting Literacy Skills) What are Kindergarten PALS? In a busy classroom it is often difficult for the teacher to focus on a small group and still attend to the needs of the remainder of the class. Kindergarten PALS are volunteers who join the class for Literacy Center Time. PALS will meet with a group of 4-5 children. They may: play a literacy skill-based game
    read a story aloud
assist in the computer center with writing or skill-related software
supervise the listening center. How much time is required? Literacy Center Time is scheduled for approximately one hour. Times may vary with each day. A Kindergarten PAL will volunteer for one hour each week for the entire school year. It is expected that you will seriously commit to attending each week. Who can volunteer? Parents and grandparents are welcome to join us. Your child should understand that this commitment offers your time to all students. If he/she requires your undivided attention, or will not participate in activities outside your particular group, volunteering is not suggested. There will be many other opportunities to join our class during the year.

The curriculum provides an academic core which consists of an introduction to mathematical concepts, activities to develop reading readiness skills and, an introduction to manuscript writing. It also consists of activities in the general and social sciences, as well as the promotion of appreciation of music, art, and literature. Motor facilitation activities are offered to promote the development of the child's large muscle coordination and body awareness.
The development of appropriate work habits is important to a successful school experience. The child should become capable of working independently and in a group, to listen and follow directions, and to relate stories and personal experiences. The amount of formal instruction that can be given is governed by the ability and maturity of the children in each class.
Play in the Kindergarten is a planned learning activity to help your child develop mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. The child is not aware that these planned activities are anything but fun ("play"). Here is a brief outline of the areas of study which will be presented to your child during the coming year. Individual children may be offered alternative materials to meet special needs. The kindergarten staff urges parents to attend regularly scheduled parent-teacher conferences and to contact your child's teacher if they have any questions about progress.

Reasons to Think about Making Writing Fun When everyone needs a break from using picture books to teach narrative writing , make writing fun for both teacher and students by adding an art component to some of your writing activities. Students need to practice the kind of writing required for state testing programs, but there are many ways to prepare them for the test and help them acquire the skills they need. Art is a natural activity to accompany writing for several reasons. The developmental stages of each process parallel each other from the time a child begins to scribble until he or she is able to organize written vocabulary into stories and visual images into pictures. Compare the Developmental Stages of Writing and Artterms very young children use interchangeably. Writing Art Scribbling Scribbling Learns to print letters in name Learns to make symbols to represent objects Uses letters in name to write everything Repeats symbols to represent everything Environmental letters are added (Recognizes words like Wal Mart, McDonald's)
