  • Civilization on the Korean peninsula has developed in close interaction with neighboring China and other cultures on the Northeast Asian mainland, and with Japan. The Korean climate is continental, similar to the northeastern United States, but with the precipitation patterns of monsoon Asia. Winters are cold and dry, summers hot and humid with heavy rainfall. As in Japan and much of China, the staple food in Korea has traditionally been rice, cultivated in wet paddy fields. Labor-intensive wet-rice agriculture, combined with this difficult topography and climate, meant that most of the Korean population was concentrated into relatively small areas and into tight-knit village communities. Social cohesion in traditional Korea was reinforced by norms of behavior strongly influenced by Confucianism from China.
Cultural Influences
  • From the political unification of the Korean peninsula in the seventh century C.E. until the twentieth century, Korea was a centralized monarchy, ruled by a king, and until at least the fourteenth century Korea also had a powerful hereditary aristocracy. Unlike the warrior class in Japan, the military in Korea lost its elevated social status after the fourteenth century."

Some History of Korea
The Korean people trace their history back about 5000 years. As you can see in the map, Korea is located between the countries China, Japan, and Russia. Throughout history people from these countries have all tried to control the Korean land, so many wars have been fought here. Having to defend their land so much has made the Korean people strong and proud. O ne of their heros is a man called Admiral Yi. In the years 1591 and 1592 he built many new ships. These were called Turtle Ships because they were covered by a hard armor shell, just like a turtle. When the Japanese attacked Korea in 1592, Admiral Yi used these ships to defeat the Japanese Navy. This was a great victory for the Korean People. As you can see from the picture, a person has to be careful when getting on board because it is covered with big pikes. T he Koreans are famous for their Celadon vases. They have been making pottery for thousands of years and have learned to make may beautiful things. I saw many vase shops during my visit. While pretty on the outside, the vases are very cool and dark inside. It was pretty hard not to buy one, but my suitcase is too small and I couldn't carry it.

Breakout: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950 by Martin Russ Quality Paperback
Martin Russ's controversial book "Breakout: The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950" tells the riveting story of how 12,000 Army personnel and Marines fought their way out of an encirclement by more than 60,000 Chinese soldiers. A Marine wounded in combat during the Korean War, Russ writes with a passion for the men who endured freezing temperatures and scaled treacherous mountains while continuing to strike the enemy as they advanced toward safety. While many accounts of modern war bog readers down in a morass of military and administrative details, Russ's history so clearly distinguishes the various units, locations and personalities that shaped the campaign that it could easily be compared with the finest novels of battle, including Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels . Expertly moving between American, Chinese and Korean points of view, Russ argues that the Marines were trapped at Chosin because of the arrogance of Douglas MacArthur, the incompetence of the U.S. Army and the disciplined planning of the Chinese generals.

The fIrst kingdom named Gojoseon was fonned in 2333 B.C. By the first century B.C., Korea's three ancient kingdoms of the Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla ruled the whole Korean Peninsula and much of Manchuria; they were by far the most powerful and eminent kingdoms in the area. The period of their rules, 57 B.C.- A.D. 668, is known as the Three Kingdoms period.
Goguryeo and Baekje were ultimately van- quished by Silla in A.D. 668. In A.D. 676, Silla unified the peninsula for the first time. The Unified Silla period, A.D.676-935, was a golden age for Korean culture. The advancements in the area of Buddhist art are especially noteworthy.
In the succeeding Goryeo Dynasty, A.D. 918-1392, an aristocratic government was instituted. Buddhism was established as the state religion and came to have great influ- ence in the political and administrative spheres. The name "Korea" is a derivative of "Goryeo" . The Joseon Dynasty, A.D. 1392-1910, was the peninsula's final dynasty. During this period various political and economic reforms were enacted. The most prominent of these was the adoption of Confucianism as the state ideology. The surge of creative literary endeavors and the invention of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, in 1443, invest this period with special cultural significance.

Kim Il-sung: The 'eternal' president
The outpouring of grief was extraordinary: a product of decades of exposure to a grotesque cult of personality. Indeed such has been the isolation of this tiny country that it may be many years before North Koreans realise the true legacy of the Kim Il-sung years, and how far and how fast their fortunes have fallen. Cold war warriors The northern half of Korea was born on 9 September 1948 amid the chaos following the end of World War II. Supported by the Soviet Union, the charismatic Kim Il-sung embarked on a series of popular social and economic reforms, including the redistribution of land and nationalisation of Japanese property. This gave the communists considerable support, while simultaneously driving many of the skilled and richer parts of the population to the South.

When Kim Il-sung died in July 1994, North Koreans had never known anything else. The 'Great Leader' had shaped and dominated political and economic affairs for almost half a century. The outpouring of grief was extraordinary: a product of decades of exposure to a grotesque cult of personality. ... With support from the Soviet Union less assured, Kim Il-sung in the 1950's, began a move towards "self-reliance" or Juche.
This led to some industrial success and good economic growth but by the 1970s a combination of higher oil prices and a growing technology gap had undermined the strategy. While other communist countries, including China, opted for reform, North Korea maintained the ideological purity of its economic policy but this rigid state controlled system led to increasing problems exacerbated by high levels of military spending. In 1980, the country defaulted on all of its loans, except those from Japan. By the late 1980's output was declining by more than four per cent a year.

'Last Empress,' Musical Echo of Korea's History
By Don Kirk International Herald Tribune SEOUL - The ironies of Korean history echo across the generations in a Korean musical that blends the influences of Broadway, European opera and Korea's own musical tradition in a sad saga of nationalist frustration, foreign skullduggery and personal tragedy of imperial dimensions. The musical, ''The Last Empress,'' is about the legendary Queen Min, a woman who rose from common origins to marry King Kojong in the late 19th century and then strove mightily to protect him, their son, the throne and the country from the Japanese. She paid with her life as the victim of a meticulously arranged Japanese assassination plot that was the tragic precursor to half a century of Japanese domination, the last 35 years as a ruling colonial power. ''This production is a lesson from history,'' said Yun Ho Jin, the director. ''The form is Western-style, the sets are Western, but the songs carry a lot of Korean rhythm and emotion.''

APR 9, 2003 is a significant year for all Koreans in that it marks thefiftieth anniversary of the country's liberation from Japan. Forthirty-six years, Korea had to suffer under the brutal and inhumane rule of the Japanese, and liberation meant far more than mere physical freedom from oppression. It was a chance to reclaim the country's place in the world and to restore its proud history. To commemorate this special occasion, KBS, as a public broadcasting system representing Korea, takes pride in publishing The History of Korea. The book was written with foreign readers in mind and is designed to provide an accessible, fair and objective overview of the country's history.
Korea is a proud country with a unique culture and tradition that are over 5,000 years old. Yet results of various surveys indicate that many people around the world do not have a correct understanding of the country's history, and information in this area has been relatively scarce. The purpose of this book is to address the inaccuracies or distortions foreigners may have in their knowledge of the history of Korea.
The book contains a comprehensive overview of Korea's history from ancient times to the present and is co-published by Radio Korea International of KBS and the National Institute for International Education Development under the Ministry of Education Korea, It is hoped that readers will find this easily accessible and fair and objective in its presentation of the history of Korea.
