A Brief Biosketch On May 11, 2001, Shinae Chun was confirmed by the Senate as the 15th Director of the Women's Bureau. Under the direction of Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, Ms. Chun is the highest ranking Korean American in the Bush administration, and heads the only Federal agency charged with advocating on behalf of women in the workforce. From 1991 to 1999, Ms. Chun was the Director of the Illinois Department of Labor. In 1982, Ms. Chun was one of the founding members of the Asian American Advisory Council to Governor James R. Thompson. She has authored two books, FROM THE MOOUNTAINS OF MASAN TO THE LAND OF LINCOLN (1996) and KOREAN CULTURE - A PASSAGE THROUGH KERMIT KINGDOM (1980).

Substantial geographic variations in cancer incidence rates have been found within and among nations. Data show that cancers of the lung, breast, colon/rectum, ovary, and prostate tend to be more common in developed countries In contrast, cancers of the cervix, stomach, and liver are more common in some developing countries, including most Asian nations . Among migrants, cancer incidence rates trend toward patterns in the country of adoption . These alterations in cancer rates are probably due to environmental and lifestyle changes, such as diet and cigarette smoking. Cancer rates can differ even within nations. In the U.S., lung cancer mortality rates are significantly higher in the southeast, where tobacco is cultivated and cigarette smoking rates are high . In China, lung cancer mortality rates are high in the north, in areas with widespread industrial and household pollution from fossil fuels . There are also large regional differences in nasopharyngeal cancer mortality rates in China, with higher rates in the southeast among the Cantonese; explanations may be genetic and dietary factors

Cristina Oxtra 27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. I can recall a conversation with a young man at a store some time ago. I had recently been commissioned in the Air Force. When I asked him if he worked in the local area, he said, "I work on base." He was apparently an active-duty military member. When he asked me where I worked, I replied, "I work on base as well." But before I could finish my response, he quipped, "Oh, so you work at the BX." There are many Asian-Americans who work in the civilian sector on base and provide a valuable service to military people and their families. Despite what some people might think, there are also many Asian-American citizens who dedicate their lives to the United States through military service. Before I joined the military, I told a man in a business office that I was born in the Philippines and my family and I immigrated to America when I was 13. He was proud to say he was stationed in the Philippines when he was in the military and knew a great deal about the country.
