Paekdusan
Paekdusan straddles the Korean-Chinese border in the far north. At 2744m (1070ft) this extinct volcano is the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula. It is surrounded by a vast wilderness, and the main peak is covered year-round by whitish pumice and snow; the name means 'White Head Mountain'. A huge crater lake called Chonji ('Lake of Heaven') lies at the summit, surrounded by bare rocky crags. It is one of the deepest alpine lakes in the world, and although it's fed by two hot springs, it is also one of the coldest. Paekdusan is sacred to all Koreans, because according to Korean mythology it is where the 'Son of the Lord of Heaven' descended to earth and the first Korean kingdom began. North Korea's current history books also claim that the Dear Leader established his headquarters here in the 1920s and defeated the Japanese from there. Although no history books outside of North Korea claim the region was a battlefield during WWII, plenty of revolutionary and anti-imperialist slogans have been carved on the trees. Many more of these 'slogan-bearing trees' are being discovered every year, and most are so well preserved that you'd think they were carved yesterday, if you didn't know any better. Paekdusan is 350km (217mi) north-east of P'yongyang.

Many people watched the World Cup this summer in Korea. But few people, even Canadians, have had the chance to play on its field.
Jon Pelster not only visited the World Cup stadium, he was one of only of 19 Canadians selected to play soccer on its field only weeks after the World Cup tournament. The teacher at Centennial Christian School in Terrace represented Canada as a soccer player at the Global Association of Culture and Peace (GACP) conference this August in Daejeong, South Korea.
The GACP conference lasted eight days, from August 11 to 18, with athletic competitions and events of cultural appreciation taking place throughout several regions in South Korea.
"The magnitude of the conference is huge. Over 400,000 Koreans are members and the opening ceremonies had 30, 000 in attendance," Jon said.
The GACP uses sport, mainly soccer, plus art and culture to promote peace and understanding with other nations, in order to break the boundaries and misunderstandings of racial differences. This was the sixth global conference held by the GACP.
Pelster and the Canadian team played against five different teams in a tournament that paralleled the World Cup format.

http://www3.telus.net/eslkorea/didyouknow.htm
DID YOU KNOW? The name Korea comes from the early dynasty name Koryo which means high mountains and clear water. Located on the banks of the Han-gang River, Seoul is home to ¼ of Korea's population. Throughout history, Korea has resisted cultural and political domination from outside forces. Koreans do not wear shoes in a home. It is polite to take off your shoes before you enter a home. It is good manners to pass and receive objects with both hands. If you want to take someone's business card, put out your right hand to accept the card and place your left hand under the wrist. You should pass an object in the same manner. The husband is expected to hand over all or most of his salary to his wife, who manages the family finances. Son Ki-jong was the first Korean to win a Gold Medal in a marathon during the 1936 Olympics. At that time, however, Korea was under Japanese colonization and the medal was won for Japan. Acupuncture is a popular treatment for pain and illness in Korea. South Korea has one of the world's highest literacy rates, 98% among 15 year olds and older. Korean kimchi, (fermented spicy dish), is easy to make. Chop one head of Chinese cabbage, 2 green onions, and 1-2 cloves of garlic. Mix in 2 tsp of Korean red pepper powder, 1 tsp of ginger and salt. Put in a covered jar and store in the refrigerator or a cool dark place for at least a month.

potentially lethal and toxic effects. I kind of like the whole halfGodhalf-animal origin of Korean people in korean mythology.
http://www.medeasin.com/foxglove.htm
Fox G. Love : Another drawing I did for my alternative medicine talk. Representing the herbal Foxglove, the origin of the cardiac glycoside, digitalis. Foxglove itself is considered poisonous because eating the raw herbal does not give predictable safe amounts of digitalis, but often results in lethal overdoses of digitalis (per an X-Files episode or Agatha Christie novels). Causing weakness, heart arrhythmias, complete heart block and death in the worst cases. Through modern science, the active compound of Foxglove has been isolated and prescribed as Digoxin, a very common and effective heart medication. (Shown in massive cardiac trials to improve symptoms and decrease hospitalizations in systolic heart failure. No improvement in mortality though.) It's levels are monitored carefully but being able to give predictable small dosages makes it a much safer drug. Foxglove like many alternative medicines has many romantic names, including Witch's Glove, Virgin's Glove, Fairy Fingers. The girl in the drawing is wearing a Korean hairpin ring and pin. Streaked hair seems to be the popular thing among many an Asian femme both in America and Korea.

PROPOSAL TO TURN KOREAN DMZ INTO NATURE AND PEACE RESERVE
It will be the first nature strip on a battlefield - there are moves to turn the de-militarised zone between North and South Korea - still technically at war - into a reserve for the protection of rare and endangered species
The Korean D-M-Z is one of the world's potential military flashpoints, but it has also become a refuge for unique fauna and flora.
    Anita Barraud reports: .
SFX..Now do you see Mount Kumgang over there?
Yeah I do. What do you think of it? Well it looks very tall and majestic, and very steep, and I'd love to go and visit it some day. It's known as the most beautiful mountain in South and North Korea. It's very disapointing that people can't visit Mount Kumgang because of the border. Just look at this fence along the DMZ. It separates the 2 sides.
BARRAUD: Now this potential tourist will get his wish.
A pointed message from a documentary series broadcast recently on the South Korean Television called "DMZ the Hidden Land of Korea"..
This month Mount Kumgang officially opened - minus the barbed wire fence. It's seen as a positive step in fostering cultural exchange between the warring North and South Korea's.

Spirituality K oreans are tolerant and accepting of spiritual differences. Korea's traditional religions, Buddhism, Confucianism and Chondogyoism, have played an important role in shaping their moral code. B uddhism has the largest following of all Korean religions. As of 1991, there were 26 Buddhist sects and 9231 temples with more than 11 million followers. Buddhism originated in India and travelled to Korea via China in the fourth century AD. C hristianity arrived in Korea in the early 17th century when the works of Matteo Ricci, a Catholic missionary in China, were brought from Peking. In 1984, Pope John Paul II paid a visit to the Roman Catholic Church in Korea to help celebrate its bicentennial. The Pope canonized 93 Koreans and 10 French missionary martyrs. It was the first time that a canonization ceremony had been held outside the Vatican. This gave Korea the fourth largest number of Catholic saints in the world. Did you know? According to Korean mythology, Tan-gun , half-human, half-divine and the king of sandalwood, is the ancestor of all Koreans because he became the first king of the people of the Korean peninsula.
