GEOGRAPHY
"The realm of Kurdistan begins on the coast of the Straits of Hormuz, which borders on the shores of the Indian Ocean. From thence, it extends forth on a straight line, terminating with the the provinces of Malatya and Marash. To the north of this line are the provinces of Fars, Persian Iraq, Azerbaijan, Armenia Minor and Armenia Major. To its southern side lay the Arab Iraq, Mosul and Diyarbakir. And thus the branches of this nation have reached from the extremities of the lands of the East to the extremities of the lands of the West." Prince Sharafaddin Bitlisi, AD 1597

Kurdistan General content Presentation Introduction Kurdistan and the Kurdish nation The economy of Kurdistan ... Home The Origin of Kurds The origin of Kurdish people belongs to all the Indo-European tribes who migrated to Kurdistan, and melted the native inhabitants of this land in their crucible. The Kurds have existed in what is on ethnic grounds defined as Kurdistan for several thousands of years. The ancestry to Kurds is often traced back to the Medes, a tribal group which moved into the Iranian plateau from central Asia at the end of the second millennium. The Medes has been a great power in 612 BC, and expanded their empire over a larger area before collapsing in 550 BC( D. Mackdonwall, p.85, 1992 ). th century BC. ( B.Yassin,1985 p.35 ). The Kurds appear to be descendants of diverse ancient groups, including Caucasian peoples in the north and people that had originally inhabited the mountainous western territories of the Caspian Sea from the earliest times. The central part of these territories lies on both sides of the Zagros mountain range and stretches south and west through lower Anatolia into the mountainous area of northern Iraq and Syria.

Office Hours: Before and after class G220 - Resource Page INTRODUCTION Human geography deals with how people arrange, divide and use the space they live and work in. Following the text, will will examine these concepts from five different perspectives:
    • Regions - people create regions wherever they live and these constructs are important in how we order our world. Diffusion - people and ideas are not stationary; they move from place to place bringing new ideas and people into different regions which change those places. Landscape - the visible imprint of people on the surface of the earth. While we all take for granted the smaller things that we create as societies, the largest and perhaps most important is the very landscape we live in. The cultural landscape is not a natural thing but something people create. Ecology - while this word has a lot of meanings today, for this class it refers to how people of different cultures interact with different environments. Integration - a two-pronged theme, it deals but with the general social scientific idea that all these ideas are related and together make up how we live and the second idea that people and regions interact with each other all the time over space. These patterns of interaction are as important in defining our personal and group geographies as is the question of where we are.

As important as the roads which brought foreign influence into the country were the mountainous areas provided a refuge for peoples fleeing from invasions for a brief or permanent stay in the security of their mountain strongholds. The point has recently been made that 'the plains were the melting-pots [p. 17] of various peoples while the mountains provided isolated areas where various religious beliefs [or heresies], old traditions and customs could be maintained in comparative isolation from the great areas of history'. The surprising survival of motifs and techniques in Iranian art over many centuries, and even millennia, may be explained by the traditions maintained in these refuge areas. An example of such an areas is seen in the mountain valleys of western Pakistan in a region formerly called Kafiristan or 'Land of the Infidels'. Horses of an ancestor statue in a graveyard in the Rumbur valley wear ornaments which are very similar to those seen on Assyrian reliefs and which also resemble finds of such ornaments made in Iran in Luristan and at Ziwiye in Kurdistan. . . . . THE KURDISH PEOPLES
The following chart summarizes an extensive survey and evaluation of the Kurdish peoples and the languages they speak. I have followed the classification of languages and dialects used by the Summer Institute of Linguistics , as published in the Ethnologue , 13th Edition, 1996, online. (This was the current edition at the time of the research. Edition 14 of 2000 maintains the same dialect and language designations as Editions 13.) This represents a revision of names and dialect groupings among the Kurds, based on later research than other sources used. This appears to be the most recent schema summarizing research on the Kurdish languages. Previous sources were not consistent, so accounting for some variations from this presentation. Observations and Findings with Conclusions follow the chart. Dr. Orville Boyd Jenkins

    THE KURDS
The Kurdish nation is a divided nation cut up into five parts and distributed among the states of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the former Soviet Union. According to history books and historians, the word "kurds" is very old and it goes back in time to 2000 B.C. The Kurdish population is estimated to be 35 million. The Kurdish people have their own language, culture, and unique historical development. In terms of ethnic origin, the Kurds belong to the Indo European family of nations.
According to history books and historians the word "KURD" is very old and it goes back in time to 2000 B.C. Kurds historical neighbours are Assyrians to the south, Persians to the east, Armenians to the north and Greeks to the west. The Kurdish Language is a branch of the Indo-European family of languages which includes Kurdish, Persian, Baluchi, Urdu, Afgani, and most of the European languages such as German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, French, Scandinavian languages, and English. Many scholars and linguists believe that the Kurdish language, because of its isolation and seclusion in the numerous closed valleys and mountain slopes of the Kurdistan Highlands, has preserved many of its original characteristics; it is considered to be pure and to resemble closely the original primitive Aryan tongue. Modern Kurdish is divided into two major groups: 1)The Kurmanji group with it's two main dialects: North Kurdish (Kurmanji) and
