Country Profile

Flag of Kuwait Background:
Kuwait was part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire from the 16th century until the latter part of the 19th century when the Al-Sabah family, which now rules Kuwait, took control of local administration and steered the country into a semi-autonomous position.
On 2 August 1990 Kuwait was attacked and overrun by Iraq. Following several weeks of aerial bombardment, a US-led UN coalition began a ground assault on 23 February 1991 that completely liberated Kuwait in four days. Kuwait has spent more than $5 billion to repair oil infrastructure damaged during 1990-91.

Kuwait is one of the most beautiful Arabic countries around and its capital, Kuwait City, is fantastic. I like it because it's my country and it has many attractions, like shopping, camping, fishing, restaurants and lots more great things. The Al-Sabah family ruled Kuwait and its dynasty was established in the mid-eighteenth century, about 1760. Because of its small size and small number of people, Turks threatened to take actual control of Kuwait in 1899. Kuwait received British protection when the threat was real. In 1938, Kuwait discovered oil under its land and by 1946 was exporting the oil, after which Kuwait's economy flourished. It became independent under Sheikh Abdullah Al-Sabah in 1961. In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait. For seven months Iraqi soldiers and war-machines destroyed most of our beautiful country. After those seven months Kuwait was free with the help of the world.

In 1962, the first Kuwaiti play was presented, to be applauded as a success by the zealous audience. The people of Kuwait then showed much zest and encouragement to the following presentations. This encouraging reaction made possible the later development of the Kuwaiti Theater. In 1959, the theatrical movement gained momentum when official efforts resulted in the creation of the modern stage. And the first domestic "Arabi Group" was created and began its activities in 1961.

KUWAIT KONKNNI KENDR
By : Mr. Mario Rebello
One's culture is too deeply linked with one's language. One's language is the barometer of one's culture. If one knows one's language well, then one can know one's own culture well. One can never reach into the sea of eternal understanding through somebod y else's mother tongue. By throwing a shadow over ones own mother tongue one can never expose one's true culture. One's mother tongue is like a soul of one's body. Without a soul the body is dead and without a language one's culture is dead. Wherever Goan s went for greener pastures the first thing they did was to organize Goan organizations to protect their material and other benefits. Fine, this is the need of the hour but never ever expatriate Goans thought of protecting Goan culture in its true sense. < BR>
In view of this on 30th November 1984 finally "KUWAIT KONKNNI KENDR" was formed. Probably for the first time in the history of expatriate Goans, the Goa conscious Goans in Kuwait formed this organization to help protect and promote Goan culture bec ause it is only through Konkani that Goan culture is protected This organization was formed with the initiative of Mr. Anthony Veronica Fernandes

The State of Kuwait is eager to encourage culture, t hroug h public libraries, the activities of the National Council for Culture, the Arts and Literature and its various subsidiary bodies, or through the activities of other institutions. There are public libraries throughout Kuwait, offering hundreds of thousands of books, periodicals and reference works to their readers. There is a well-stocked central library, which occupies the Mubarakiya School building (the first school established in Kuwait). The Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts and the Higher Institute of Music work to spread the arts of the theatre and music, hold special performances and graduate students, thus helping to raise the standards of taste in these arts. The National Council , which was established in 1973, supervises the publication of the World Theatre, World Culture, World of Knowledge, World of Thought and World Creativity series of books. It also organizes an annual cultural festival known as the Qurain Cultural Festival, through which orchestras and artists from Kuwait, the Arab World and other countries present examples of their creativity to the public. Literature The festival also includes an intellectual or cultural seminar, which deals with some subject and is a true embodiment of intellectual variety and respect for opinion and counter-opinion. Kuwaitis contribute a fair amount to Arab literary, cultural and intellectual output. Two Kuwaiti novels have won appreciation in Arab literary circles and were chosen among the hundred best Arabic novels in the twentieth century.

Cultural Roots in Kuwait Contributions of the pioneers of cultural growth in Kuwait Aspects of cultural growth and institutional work Kuwait’s support of scientific research ... Consequences of the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait 1. Cultural Roots in Kuwait Before speaking about the culture of any society, one should consider the conditions of this society in the past, which gave it the chance to express its cultural aspirations through its growing intellectual movement. This is what finally shapes the cultural trends of the society. When discussing cultural roots, we should tackle the political, historical, geographical, social, psychological, strategic, economic, and religious aspects of the society, which help create a suitable and effective atmosphere to shape its cultural and intellectual movements. Political Aspects The nature of Kuwaiti society and its relationships with its rulers throughout different eras show that consultation and open discussions have been principles to which everyone adhered.
