History Under threat from both Siamese, Burmese and Chinese invaders in the sixteenth century, the capital of the faltering Lane Xang was moved to Vieng Chan (Vientiane) by King Setthathirat in 1560. The Burmese were not to be put off by this tactical move and finally occupied the city in 1575, holding it for seven years and finally bringing an end to the once great Lane Xang. European ambitions in the region, at the end of the nineteenth century, were of serious concern to the Siamese kings for many years. In 1893, to guarantee that the French colonialists would not challenge the country's sovereignty, Siam gave them Laos. The French - soon realising that the colony was not quite the grand acquisition they had hoped, and that the Mekong River's potential as a backdoor trade route into China had been vastly over estimated - made Laos a protectorate and left much of the running of the country to the Lao people.

Asia Laos Travel Guide ... Lao People's Democratic Republic: Culture The basis of Laotian culture is religion and tradition. Art, literature, music, and drama draw mainly FROM these sources. Towns along the Mekong are exposed to Western culture through Thai mass media. Theravada Buddhism entered the country in the 14th century. This religion and Hinduism have been major influences on cultural and intellectual life in Laos. The story of the Buddha and Hindu myths are the subjects of the carvings and sculptures found in all religious places. In the south, Khmer influences on the peoples of Laos are strong; in the north, Myanmar and Thai influences are readily apparent. As elsewhere in Southeast Asia, religious symbols, stories, and themes have been modified and localized. The snake, for example, representations of which adorn religious and royal buildings, symbolizes the benevolent spirit of the water and the protector of the king. The Laotians have a variety of folk arts, including weaving, basketmaking, wood and ivory carving, and silverwork and goldwork. There are a number of Laotian musical instruments, of which the khen, a bamboo wind instrument, is most widely known. Music is not written down but is played FROM memory.

    Introduction
    Culture and festivals in Laos
Traditional culture in Laos has been heavily influenced by various strains of Khmer, Vietnamese and Thai cultures.
Lao hilltribes The lowland Lao share the same ancestry as many Thai tribes, so the similarities between Lao and Thai culture are especially strong. This can be seen in Lao sculpture, classical music, dance-dramas and cuisine. Lao folk music is more indigenous, based around the khaen (a double row of bamboo reeds fitted into a hardwood sound box). Folk music is often accompanied by dancing or bawdy theatre. The focus of most traditional art has been primarily religious and includes wats (temples), stupas and several distinctively Lao representations of Buddha. The Lao remain skilful carvers and weavers, but traditional silversmithing and goldsmithing are declining arts.

Laos Map Tourist Attractions Find Knowledge base on the main provinces of Laos at Tourist Attraction Lao people boast a plethora of distinctive monuments and architectural styles. One of the most notable structures is That Luang , the Great Sacred Stupa, in Vientiane. Its dome like stupa and four-cornered superstructure is the model for similar monuments throughout Laos. Stupas serve to commemorate the life of the Buddha and many stupas are said to house sacred relics (parts of Buddha's body). Generally, Hinayana Buddhists cremate the dead body then collect the bone and put in the stupa which set around the temple. Different styles of architecture are evident in the numerous Buddhist vats. Three architectural styles can be distinguished, corresponding to the geographical location of the temples and monasteries. Vats built in Vientiane are large rectangular structures constructed of brick and covered with stucco and high-peaked roofs. In Luang Prabang the roofs sweep very low and, unlike in Vientiane, almost reach the ground. These two styles are different from the vats of Xieng Khouang where the temple roofs are not tiered.

    Laos - Culture Festivals
The Lao word for festival is 'boun', which also means 'merit', and is an important part of life - the Lao will happily celebrate almost anything. There are 4 major national festivals through out the year - the exact month varies according to the Buddhist calendar.
The Lao also celebrate Chinese New Year - Tet, Labour Day on May 1st , National day on December 2nd and even Christmas.
Another uniquely Lao ceremony is the baci, which celebrates any major life event, such as a homecoming, wedding, national festival or a birth. It is translated as 'calling the soul', and is a moving experience whereby soft cotton threads are tied round the wrists of the person to be honoured, to bring luck, health and prosperity.
    Animism
A blanket term for a widespread variety of beliefs, pertaining to individual minority and tribal groups, in which local spirits are worshipped and propitiated. Animist practices are discouraged as primitive by most of the governments in the area.

Phia Sing was the Master of Ceremonies and Chef at the royal palace of Luang Prabang. He died in 1967. Phia Sing's notebooks containing these recipes were loaned to Alan Davidson, British ambassador in Vientiane in the early l970s, by the Crown Prince of Laos. Alan Davidson arranged for their translation and added much useful material explaining Lao foods and cookery. The text is ornamented by drawings, mainly by the Lao artist Soun Vannithone. e are 124 recipes. Some of them also figure in Fish and Fish Dishes of Laos , but their range encompasses every aspect of cooking, not merely the fishy bit.

Fish and Fish Dishes of Laos Alan Davidson 185 pp; 158 x 230 mm; paperback (Expected Winter 2000) This book was first published by the author in Vientiane, where he was British ambassador, in 1975, and subsequently by Charles E. Tuttle. Alan Davidson was, of course, the founder of Prospect Books itself. Laos is an inland country, the fish are freshwater species. A catalogue of many of those available in Lao markets is followed by some 50 recipes from Laos and its neighbours. earlier readers may remember it for the description of the giant catfish of the Mekong, but it is valuable too for its description of other strange creatures ('River Dragons: one hears of these..,) and for a cookery that will captivate creator and victim by its fiery delicacy. There are points of contact with the Traditional Recipes of Laos, above, but together they make a wonderful in-troduction to the country.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History The country has long been occupied by migrating Thais (including Shans, Siamese and Lao) and slash-and-burn Hmong/Mien hill tribes. The first Lao principalities were consolidated in the 13th century following the invasion of south-west China by Kublai Khan's Mongol hordes. In the mid-14th century, a Khmer-sponsored warlord, Fa Ngum, combined a number of scattered principalities around Luang Prabang to form his own kingdom, Lan Xang ('a million elephants').
