Venezuela’s Disarray Invites Washington to Play a Larger Role

Washington’s professed unrest isn’t necessarily a cover to blast Chavez for his leftist and nationalistic ideologies, or defend the interests of the local elite. Oil has been the glue that has held Venezuela and the U.S. together in the past 50 years. For decades, U.S. administrations have tolerated various nationalistic measures taken by Venezuelan governments

Affluent Hispanics who are increasing in numbers need and want advice and guidance in investments and finance. At the same time, poor economic conditions in Latin America are forcing Latin Americans to seek financial shelter in the more stable markets of the U.S. Finding those investors, however, is not easy. This workshop will guide the audience in identifying, reaching, and communicating with individuals who are interested in such services. In addition, the workshop will help the attendees in developing marketing strategies for reaching Hispanics and Latin Americans. ABOUT YOUR WORKSHOP FACILITATOR: Dr. Gonzalo Soruco

World War II - The internment of German American civilians This is the homepage of Arthur D. Jacobs, Major, USAF Retired; Researcher: Internment in the United States during World War II, December 7, 1941 - July 1948
e-mail:adjacobs@foitimes.com Background German Americans are the largest ethnic group in the US. Approximately 60 million Americans claim German ancestry. German American loyalty to America's promise of freedom traces back to the Revolutionary War. Nevertheless, during World War II, the US government and many Americans viewed German Americans and others of "enemy ancestry" as potentially dangerous, particularly recent immigrants. The Japanese American WWII experience well known. Few, however, know of the European American WWII experience, particularly that of the German Americans. The government used many interrelated, constitutionally questionable methods to control those of enemy ancestry, including internment, individual and group exclusion from military zones, internee exchanges for Americans held in Germany, deportation, "alien enemy" registration requirements, travel restrictions and property confiscation. The human cost of these civil liberties violations was high. Families were disrupted, reputations destroyed, homes and belongings lost. Meanwhile, untold numbers of German Americans fought for freedom around the world, including their ancestral homelands.

A Sweet Message for Americans "We Are Family"
By Norman Solomon On the magazine cover, the big headline next to Oprah's shoulder is as warm and cuddly as the pair of cocker spaniels in her lap. "WE ARE FAMILY," it says. "Now more than ever: the power and pleasure of feeling connected." Inside this new issue of O "The Oprah Magazine" the editorial director's lead-off article offers a profound explanation. "Our vision of family has been expanded," writes Oprah Winfrey. "From the ashes of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and that field in Pennsylvania arose a new spirit of unity. We realize that we are all part of the family of America." It's an appealing concept, especially during these uncertain times. Ever since Sept. 11, countless media outlets have provided similar themes. The December issue of O deftly hits the now-familiar high notes. Three-quarters of the way through the thick, glossy, ad-filled magazine, "We Are Family" reappears in large type, under an American flag and over another message from Oprah. "America is a vast and complicated family," she declares, "but as the smoke clears and the dust settles a family nonetheless." Such sentiments are lovely. But what do they really mean? They're certainly not meant to be taken literally. Oprah isn't inviting you or me over to her place for the holidays, and we wouldn't even think of asking her to add us to her family's topnotch medical coverage.

Writing About Coming of Age in America

Donna Kirschner, Instructor in Anthropology
How does one become an American? More than a fact of birth or citizenship, becoming an American is a process of forming a particular identity with respect to the wider world. This course explores how people of various cultural backgrounds become and live as "Americans." We will compare the diverse ways that people experience American-ness, focusing in particular on the experiences of adolescents and young adults as they struggle to forge their adult identities, or "come of age." This perspective will offer a lens onto wider issues of ethnicity, race, class, region, and other distinctions that are key to understanding American culture and society. Throughout, we will take up the question of national identity, questioning what, if anything, it means to be "American."
To explore these questions, we will read ethnographies (anthropologists' descriptions of culture), autobiographies, fiction, and films of how people "come of age" in American culture and society. Students will also conduct original fieldwork, such as observations of human behavior on Penn's campus or in the Philadelphia area.
Through the intensive writing component of this course, students will respond to the readings, fieldwork and their own coming-of-age experiences. Examination of our own personal histories will serve as a starting point for further critical analyses of issues involved in identity formation in general. Since we will emphasize writing as a process rather than a product, students will have many opportunities to receive feedback and revise their writing.

T Th 9:30 - 10:50 Barnett/Sugimoto Offered for the first time in Spring 2003, ASIA 344 is an interdisciplinary course that serves as an elective for all students and as an elective in either Track I or Track II for Asian Studies majors and minors. This course explores the interactions of Asian peoplesthe commodities, social practices, and ideas which they produceacross borders, both political and imagined. The course crosses disciplinary borders, as well, drawing upon divergent materials from the humanities and social sciences in an attempt to do justice to a contemporary context that could be called "Asia in motion." An underlying thesis holds that, since nineteenth-century colonialism, nations in the "West" and "Asia" participate in a global, dialectical movement in which notions of identity (national, cultural, ethnic, religious, territorial, linguistic) share moments of fluidity and fixity. BIOLOGY BIOL 121A - INTRO TO HUMAN BIOLOGY
MWF 11:00 - 11:50 Pamela Marshall See Course Offerings for available lab times An alternative to BIOL 111, BIOL 121 emphasizes human biology and is designed to fulfill a Natural World core requirement. This course fills the biology requirement for Psychology majors and can serve as preparation for BIOL 221 Human Anatomy and Physiology. Topics covered will include cell communication, genetics, developmental disorders, organ systems, epidemiology, degenerative processes, and memory and learning. Content may vary depending on student interests and events in the news. Case studies will be presented to illustrate the concepts developed in these areas. Laboratory is required and may include (optional) animal dissection. Satisfies a Natural World Natural core requirement. Meets prerequisite requirement for BIOL 221. Does not meet a requirement in the Biology major.
