Learning styles have been at the centre of controversy for several decades now, and there is still little agreement about what learning styles really are. One of the major distinctions made in learning styles research is the visual/auditory/kinesthetic distinction. Researchers generally agree that modalities of learning are distinguishable, though whether they represent learning styles or learning differences remains to be seen. Some have included such factors as environmental influences such as intake (ie. food), light, or heat as components of style. Two major issues remain constant. The first is whether to teach to students' strengths or attempt to expand their styles. The second issue revolves around whether or not teachers can observe the differences among students' styles, or whether valid and reliable tests and inventories should be used. A simple test that can be administered in the classroom is to present students with a series of problems which can be solved, with varying success, through a number of styles. The problems in the section "Assessing Your Learning Styles" are designed so that they can be solved through a number of styles. Start at "How Do You Think" , and work your way through the problems, being aware of your thinking as you go about problem solving. You will find that individuals tend to prefer one mode over the others, though those with an adaptive learning style are likely to apply a number of strategies if at first their preferred mode is unsuccessful. There is also a brief look at other inventories which you might want to find more information about on the Web.

For the last twenty years or so, as diversity in our country has been growing, hundreds of different kinds of assessments have been developed to determine individual differences. There have been tests that determine perceptual differences, world view (i.e. field dependent and independent), learning styles, personality differences (i.e. Myers-Briggs), different kinds of talents, and different kinds of intelligence. The results of these tests are of little value unless they can be applied to helping students to learn and teachers to teach more effectively. They can be destructive when they are used primarily to "pigeon-hole" students in their own eyes and the eyes of others. We offer here a few of the most useful kinds of assessment. These tests are especially helpful when taken first by the teacher in order to determine his or her own profile. Thereby the teacher can guard against teaching in only that way and as a consequence making it very difficult for students who do not share a similar profile. It appears that the best use of this information is to help teachers broaden their array of teaching strategies so that students are learning at least part of the time in ways they find comfortable, and at other times in ways that stretch them into new ways of thinking and learning.

At a time when there is increasing diversity of learners in every classroom, Many teachers are finding it challenging to help each student to identify his or her unique strengths and use them to learn successfully. So Each May Learn fills an important need by integrating Jung's theory of psychological types with Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences.
The six chapters include an introduction to multiple intelligences, an introduction to learning styles, how to connect the two models on brain-based principles, how to realign the curriculum so it incorporates both models, how to design integrated performance assessments, and how to teach students about learning styles and MI. The appendixes include inventories for the two models and a teaching strategy index.
The book is filled with charts, diagrams, and numerous examples from the field. It is a timely, practical, and extremely valuable book for teachers on all levels and in every subject-matter area.

Introduction Jump to Details INTRODUCTION During my years as an Educational Consultant and teacher in both the traditional and homeschool arenas, I have been moved by the number of despondent teachers and students I have encountered. They have come to view the learning process as a dreaded chore rather than an invited adventure. I have encountered children as young as six and seven years old who are totally opposed to learning or school of any kind because they have been forced to learn by specific methods that do not fit their individual learning styles. Many of these children in traditional schools are often diagnosed with a variety of disabilities, yet specific teaching styles and learning preferences are never questioned or addressed. Many of these problems can be solved easily by a simple assessment of each student’s primary and secondary learning styles. There are several theories surrounding the issue of learning styles and preferences in circulation today. Some theories focus on different learning personalities such as the social or introspective learner, while others emphasize the methods learners use to process or arrange information. In all my research and experience over the years with learning styles, I have simplified learning preferences into three primary categories. These include the auditory, visual, and tactile/kinesthetic modes of learning. It is my observation that all students receive, process, and give back information either auditorally, visually, or by tactile/kinesthetic methods. A person can learn by using more than one style; yet, each person has a primary learning preference.

Activity Calendar Learning Styles and Your Child If you've ever watched a group of children interact, you've probably noticed that different children like to do different things. Why is this the case? Many educators and child psychologists believe that each child has a particular learning style that affects how he or she most effectively interacts with the world. Knowing the learning style of your child can help you choose activities that will help your child learn.
    Learning Styles: What They Are
Simply put, a learning style is the way a person acquires knowledge. It is not "what" a person learns, but "how" a person learns. Educators and psychologists have identified seven different learning stylesor intelligencesthat come into play when interacting with the world. Although we are all capable of using them all, most of us rely on only one or two. As a result, we develop our own particular approach to learning based on our favored learning styles. Educators and psychologists commonly define the seven different learning styles as follows:
    Linguistic
Linguistic learners relate to language in both its written and spoken form. They learn best through poetry, storytelling, grammar, abstract reasoning, metaphors, similes, etc.

P.E.T. Learning Styles Solution is an easy to use Web-based teaching and learning style assessment and management tool based on the work of Carl Jung and the research of Dr. Patricia Cranton and Dr. Robert Knoop. The P.E.T. Learning Styles Solution correlates personality preferences with learning styles, teaching styles, conflict resolution, leadership, management, problem solving, stress and teamwork. This innovative new Learning Styles Solution is one of the most powerful ways for education professionals to assess, manage and understand differences among students and their unique learning styles. With the move toward the individualization of educational programs in order to best meet the diverse needs of today's students, the importance of Learning Styles cannot be overlooked. Parents, teachers, and administrators now realize the level of success students achieve in school is often dependent on teaching that meets the learning styles of students.

At the same time, since the same limits are common to all humans, there are ranges within which we can characterize ways of responding to the world. Some people may tend to respond to auditory information more sensitively than to other kinds (say, iconic). The aim of learning style research is to find clusters of people who use similar patterns for perceiving and interpreting situations. Based on this information, we should be able to adjust educational environments to make them more efficient and successful places. Return to Table of Contents
    Learning Styles in Higher Education
When we look at our subject areas, we realize that different scholars approach our academic fields differently. It is this difference that make them complex and rich. Scholarship is stronger when it includes intuitive, subjective moments plus creative times plus careful data collection plus systematic analysis as well as reflective evaluation and well-written presentations. Of course, we will be better in some of these abilities and will have colleagues who are better at others. Our work (and our field) will be stronger when we devise ways to bring these multiple orientations to bear on the phenomena we study. The scholarly side of the academy clearly profits when it recognizes multiple points of view.

Learning Principles: More Important than Learning Styles
People not only learn at different rates, but also in different ways. Some students want their teacher to write everything on the board. Others prefer to listen. Some like to sit in small groups and discuss a question; others like to listen to a lecture, translating it into pictures or doodles in their notebook. Such individual learning preferences are known as learning styles. Learning styles are generally divided into three categories: (1.) visual learners, who need to see it to know it, (2.) auditory learners, who need to hear it to know it and (3.) tactual learners, who need to touch it to know it. Once you understand your child's learning style, you may be able to help him adjust his approach to the classroom and his study habits for maximum benefit. Below are a few links that offer evaluations to determine a person's learning style preferences as well as learning tips that would suite specific learning styles. However
