Set Limits, Save Lives
2002 Professional Issues Conference
M oving on its goal to look beyond the shortage and workload issues affecting nursing and the quality of healthcare, AFT Healthcare has kicked off a campaign to focus attention on the staffing concerns affecting a cross-section of healthcare professions. The campaign, "Set Limits, Save Lives," seeks to address these problems through federal and state legislation, as well as contract language. It will also continue efforts to secure legislative limits on mandatory overtime for nurses. "Our goal is to save lives by setting standards not just for nurses but for all of the workers that we represent," said Candice Owley, AFT vice president and chair of the AFT Healthcare program and policy council, at the annual professional issues conference held in Washington, D.C., April 11-14. "I don't care if we're talking about nurse-patient ratios on [hospital] floors, or the number of patients an X-ray tech is responsible for, or whether schools have an adequate number of nurses," Owley continued, "they are all workload issues that put patients at risk."

Risks Increasing for Workplace Violence
By Peter A. Janus
March, 2001
It is hard to forget the murders of the four Connecticut Lottery executives that took place in Newington in March 1998. More recently, we were reminded of the phenomenon of workplace violence by the shooting late last year of seven employees at an Internet consulting company in Wakefield, Mass., followed by the killing of four workers by an ex-employee at Navistar International Corp. in Melrose, Illinois in early February. And we are consumed today with the aftermath of the Santee, Calif. shootings.
These well-publicized tragedies may present only a small part of a more extensive problem. Violence in the workplace has captured the increasing attention of the press, government officials, safety and health professionals and the legal system. There are many questions that surround the issue. How extensive a problem is it? What is the cause? How can this type of violence be prevented? Do employees face legal liability, and if so, how can they minimize their exposure?
We can't be certain what causes an individual to cross the line. There are various factors that may contribute to some level of occupational violence: financial instability, loss of a job or a layoff, emotional or mental disorder, domestic problems and substance abuse. The stress and demands of the high-paced tech workplace certainly would lead to anxiety, job overload and finally "desk rage." The recent instability and downturn in the industry could also heighten the risk of work-related violence.

Introduction Duty Lawyer Services Legal Representation Community Legal Education ... Legal Aid Application Form Community Legal Education The aim of the community legal education program is twofold. It works to enhance the accessibility of the Legal Aid Office by raising community awareness and access to Legal Aid services. It also seeks to promote public understanding of legal issues, rights and responsibilities. We hope to do this through offering: to community workers, school groups and the public. The program has also worked to promote Legal Aid services through the media, newspaper advertising and articles, interior bus posters, radio announcements and through regularly updating community agencies on our services.
Workshops and Public Information Sessions
Please see our section on Upcoming Events and Workshops for information about current sessions on offer. Information sessions are available to community organisations, schools and the public. These sessions are provided at little or no cost. Five workshops have been developed in response to feedback from community workers and schools. Each information session runs for approximately 1 hour. The sessions are presented by either a Legal Aid lawyer, or the Legal Aid Information and Education Officer:
