The Culture of Fire on Southern Africa on Example of Lesotho and Madagascar
An Interim Report of the Working Group Forest Technology (IFFN No. 23 - December 2000, p. 50-54) Preface
At the stage of writing this report two countries returned the questionnaires which was circulated to GTZ projects in Southern Africa. Thus, this report is restricted to Lesotho and Madagascar (50% of the island) and a short description for Kenya. Introduction The discussion about pros and cons of fire has and is continuing over the decades and still there is no general answer. One of the difficulties for this is, which indicators should be used for evaluation (forest area, growing rate, income etc.), perhaps biodiversity is the best indicator. Concerning this, Pyne (1995) wrote aptly: "… Biodiversity can be lost as surely through fire exclusion as through fire excess". The contemporary world fire situation is changing dramatically. Two elements have worked to upset any systems. One is climate, the other humanity. The trends are alarming; fire, climate and humanity have begun to interact in new ways. The rapid growth rate of population in the African countries increases dramatically the frequency of fire. This is not a question of a natural process but it is anthropogenic interference into nature. New fire climax vegetation will be created and frequently the degeneration chain will start into progress, especially where the grassland is diminishing.

Lesotho
Lesotho is known as the "kingdom in the sky" and whether you're trekking by pony or by foot, you will be able to see spectacular mountain scenery. Lesotho is a magical country where music and dance feature strongly in all rituals as well as everyday life. Lesotho is ruled by King Letsie III. Many of the citizens of Lesotho still live traditional, simple lives. A journey and visit through Lesotho allows visitors to observe an African country that remains natural and unaffected by tourism.

Country Info Lesotho Introduction Lesotho General Data Lesotho Maps Lesotho Culture ... Lesotho Time and Date Lesotho Culture Back to Top The contradictions created by Lesotho's political independence and economic dependence are reflected in the cultural life of the country. Despite the country's increasing urbanization and the growth of modern institutions and bureaucracy, the overall objective of the Sotho is to build the rural homestead and perpetuate traditional institutions. The people remain loyal to the system of chieftaincy, although this traditional level of leadership has been discredited by the international community. Institutions such as the initiation schools, which perpetuate traditional values, are still significant but are changing in structure and declining in importance. The historical traditions and legacy of Mshweshwe, founder of the nation, remain strong, and there is national pride in Lesotho's history of resistance, the role of the Sotho in building modern southern Africa, and the achievements of such writers as Thomas Mofolo and such composers as Joshua Pulumo Mohapeloa. The newspaper Leselinyana la Lesotho has been published for more than a century, and printing presses at mission stations, such as the Morija Press, have made a substantial contribution to the religious and educational literature of southern Africa. Sporting activities are extremely popular, even given the low income level of the country. Football (soccer) is the most widely played sport in Lesotho, but because many of its best players go to South Africa for economic gain, Lesotho does not excel in international competition. Judo, boxing, and long-distance running are also popular, the first two benefiting from training facilities provided by the police force. Horse racing is an athletic competition important to rural social life.

Culture
Although traditional Basotho culture is breaking down through contact with the rest of the world and changes in the society, much remains because it still relates to the day-to-day lives of the locals, finding footholes in language, proverbs, games and stories. Customs, rites and superstitions explain and flavour the lives and ceremonies of the people. As in all cultures, the milestones of birth, puberty, marriage and death are associated with ceremonies. Cattle, both as sacrifices and as symbols of status, play an important role in village culture, as does the cultivation of crops and the vagaries of the weather - Basotho farmers have to worry about drought, flood, hailstorms, snow and lightning. Music and dance play their part in traditional culture, both on ceremonial occasions and in everyday life. There are various kinds of musical instruments, from the flute-like lekolulo , played by herd-boys, to the stringed thomo , played mainly by women and the setolo-tolo , a stringed instrument played with the mouth by men.

Lesotho By virtue of its topographical isolation, Lesotho has managed largely to avoid many of the recent wars, racist policies and political instability that has plagued most of the African continent this century. Landlocked by South Africa, but geographically distanced from it by huge mountain ranges, Lesotho is an often-surprising combination of rapidly developing modernity, and ancient culture. Most travellers come to Lesotho as a side-trip following time spent in South Africa, and find it a real relief to escape post-apartheid tensions. Although, like most of Africa, Lesotho is a struggling Third World nation, it has built for itself a reputation for dependable tourism. Public transport and organised tours and treks are quite reliable, and the locals are always willing to help. Although shunted to and from British and Boer control for almost 200 years, Lesotho's path to self-rule was, in comparative terms, quite smooth. Although there are still internal political manoeuvrings, the instability looks unlikely to have any adverse or violent effects in the future. Full country name: Kingdom of Lesotho
Area: 30,355 sq km (11,840 sq mi)

Water and Culture
by MaryAnn Camp , Ha Rantubu, Lesotho Having lived in Hu Rantubu, Lesotho, now 15 months, I have learned several cultural rituals connected with water. As in a lot of cultures, the religious ceremony of Baptism is one. I have seen water sprinkled over a baby's head. Another religious observance is during the "phu phu" (funeral)—water is sprinkled on the casket with a small branch (representing an olive branch). The water has been blessed by the clergy and, therefore, becomes holy water. After the sprinkling of the water on the casket, the remaining is poured over the casket at the gravesite before lowering the casket. Another ritual where water is used is if a witch doctor has put a curse on you or your family and you want to break the curse. One fills a clay pot with water and takes it to a place of water, i.e., a pond, creek, or river. The pot is laid near the water and with a stick, a swift blow is delivered to the vessel releasing the contents into the nearby water source. This is supposed to break the spell or curse. by Claire Hilger , Christ the King Mission, Qacha’s Nek, Lesotho Lesotho is a very dry country, so water is revered. Rain and snow are greeted by dancing and singing. We had no snow this year, and it is very dry. People are not planting and are worried that there will be no harvest this year. To alleviate the problem, one of the nuns from the mission asked some students to play the 'lesokoana' game. (A lesokoana is the thick stick used to stir the 'papa,' a thick porridge of maize meal that is eaten at every meal with vegetables and/or meat.) Each family has its own lesokoana, which is cut from the branch of a tree; the bark is removed and the stick becomes smooth with use. A few of my students accompanied me to the edge of the cliff where we could watch the game.

Water provides an excellent lens through which to understand gender roles. In this unit, students compare the division of labor around water-related work in rural Lesotho to their own households. By doing this, they will gain an understanding of the multiple factors that influence how gender role formation takes place in different societies.
