By Helen C. Broadus
Completely surrounded by the territory of South Africa, Lesotho is a small mountainous country that is primarily a southern African water reservoir with a population of approximately two million people. The Capital City of Lesotho is Maseru with an estimated 160,000 inhabitants and the official languages are English and Sesotho. Lesotho gained its independence on the 4th of October 1966. The Kingdom of Lesotho is a multi-party democracy with King Letsie II, who has no constitutional powers; he is the cornerstone in the maintenance of traditional culture and customs. Souvenir Shopping. The craftsmanship and affordability of handicrafts is quite impressive. Lesotho's famous conical hats, grass woven articles, mats, brooms, baskets, pottery, wool and mohair rugs, tapestries and textiles, rock painting reproductions, traditional seed, clay bead and porcupine quill jewelry, silver and gold items are all sought after. In addition, the distinctive Basotho blankets with traditional patterns and bright colors make an interesting purchase to take home.

New African communities have emerged in the United States since the mid-1960s, joining older African-American populations in several urban centers including the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Each of these communities comes together in ways that maintain and re-define its identity and sense of tradition. Senegalese organize celebrations and traditional wrestling matches at local parks and invite friends to share barbecued lamb on the Muslim holiday of Tabaski. Over AM radio, communities whose members come from the Horn of Africa (Ethiopians, Eritreans, Somalians, and Sudanese) broadcast poetry about their experience of exile in America. Ghanaians of the Ashanti ethnic group appoint local leadersan Asantehene and Queen Mother of Washington, D.C.with the ceremony and regalia of the Akan tradition in Ghana. Nigerians establish houses of worship which are branches of religious institutions back home. These communities have grown in size and visibility in the urban landscape of metropolitan Washington, but the diversity and richness of their cultures remain largely invisible to most local residents. While the 1990 Census places the overall number of African-born residents of the Washington, area at 36,327, out of a total U.S. African-born population of 363,819, informal estimates indicate that both figures are probably higher. African immigrant communities vary considerably in size, in the length of time they have been in the United States, and in the circumstances that brought them to this country. Some individuals came with scholarships to American universities; others fled oppressive political situations with "only the shirt on their backs," as one Ethiopian educator/cab driver explains. Still others came as businessmen and women.

Country Info Lesotho Introduction Lesotho General Data Lesotho Maps Lesotho Culture ... Lesotho Time and Date Lesotho Economy Back to Top The economy of Lesotho is based almost entirely on agriculture, livestock raising, and the earnings of Basothos employed outside the country. About two-fifths of the adult male labor force works in South Africa. Gross domestic product, which does not reflect remittances from workers out of the country, stood at $874 million in 1999, or $420 per person. Tourism, particularly from South Africa, has expanded rapidly. In 1998 the estimated annual budget included revenues of $392 million with expenditures totaling $442 million. Lesotho is a poor country, and its few natural resources are insufficient for even the present population. However, unexploited uranium deposits found near Teyateyaneng, about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Maseru, could introduce a significant boost to Lesotho's economy. Its economy could not be sustained at all without the benefits it derives from South Africa, with which Lesotho forms part of a customs union and shares an integrated communications system. It has also depended heavily on South Africa for employment for much of the working population, although opportunities for Sotho there became far more restrictive in the mid-1990s. About one-third of the male working population is unemployed.

Politics, History, and Culture
For social science buffs, the time is ripe in South Africa for exploring the history and legacy of apartheid. Only 10 years after Nelson Mandela's release from Robben Island , the former prison has been transformed into a museum. Cape Town is a fantastic base from which to explore the history of South Africa's "coloured" and Muslim populations, especially at the District Six Museum and in the Bo-Kaap . The Eastern Cape 's small towns offer insight into Boer life in the stifling Karoo , while its capital, Port Elizabeth , boasts two of the best township tours in the country. Trips further inland reveal the story of South Africa's development. Stop in at Kimberley to see the biggest diamond mine in the world. The history of Johannesburg is intertwined with the story of gold in South Africa. Gaze upon long-standing monuments to Afrikaner culture in Pretoria , and visit the sites of the bloodiest battles in South African history in KwaZulu-Natal In Windhoek, Alte Feste
