After not speaking to each other for six months, they were supposed to discuss uniting their political parties in a bid to widen their slender niche in a parliament dominated by President Vladimir Putin. Then, less than 24 hours beforehand, Grigory Yavlinsky, leader of the Yabloko party, called it off. In a dismissive letter to Boris Nemtsov, leader of the Union of Right Forces, he said he knew the details of Nemtsov's proposal for a merger, and had rejected it. It was a typical deadlock between the two political leaders who claim to be the voice of freedom in a country they call increasingly authoritarian. "I will explain to you the problem," said Nemtsov in an interview after the meeting was canceled, waving Yavlinsky's letter in the air. "Ego. That's it. Ego." The feud is emblematic of the troubles of Russia's liberals as they prepare for the December parliamentary elections. That was how then-Chief Electoral Officer Jean-Marc Hamel described the effect of massive special interest advertising and advocacy efforts in the 1988 election. In that election, business groups spent an estimated $13 million advertising in support of the free trade deal, while the deal's opponents spent roughly $1 million. Other expenses incurred in support of the deal included company inserts of free trade promotional material in employees' pay slips and mailings to shareholders, and meetings with employees on company time to lecture them on the benefits of the deal. Given that only one political party favoured the free trade deal, and that the deal was the key issue of the 1988 election, these "third party" efforts were clearly partisan in nature. The Liberals acknowledged that their ability to govern effectively depended on fulfilling their pledge to restore Canadians' faith in political institutions. In June 1994, the Liberals introduced their ethics package as the hallmark of their government integrity pledge. However, the federal government's ethics package was unenforceable and rife with conflicts of interest, and should have caused Canadians to question the government's honesty and integrity. A fundamental problem with the package is the Ethics Counsellor position, which was promised as an independent, effective watchdog who "has the teeth to investigate and take action." I say that you may receive this notice; it is not clear as to whether this provision can withstand a challenge being brought under Federal law by another of the parties losing ballot status. Countless, frenzied websites of the flag burning left denounced the "misguided ness" of today's youth, after decades of romanticizing, lauding, and brainwashing campus students as the Scarlet Pimpernels of America's oppressed. "The 'whiz kids' behind today's right-wing political parties leave one wondering why youth was wasted on the young," sniffed one progressive website that I had happened to surf into. So, holding right wing views is apparently enough to chemically transform the Scarlet Pimpernel into Robespierre himself. One way to explain this illogical nonsense is through the theory of the "portrait worldview". Whereas a proper right-wing worldview could be best illustrated by a chalkboard covered with mathematical writings, a typical liberal one can often resemble a portrait. The portrait varies from liberal to liberal, but one overriding theme is constant: The Right is ugly, and the Left is beautiful. "Regressive" versus "Progressive", "war-mongering" versus "pacifist", "women-hating" versus "feminist", and "bigoted" versus "tolerant" are all rhetorical attempts by liberals to describe the contrasts that they see in their mental picture.

In the general elections in June, Trudeau won, with the Liberals taking a majority. This was the first election to use the electoral constituency boundaries of 1965. In the October 1972 elections Trudeau's Liberals won but failed to gain a majority. They were able to stay in power with New Democratic support, but in May 1974 Trudeau's government fell. Though many Ontarians may already have forgotten about Bill Davis, the past leader of Ontario's Progressive Conservative Party which held the reins of power for 42 consecutive years, it will not be as easy to forget or ignore the consequences and effects of his party's political philosophy. That's because the philosophy of the Progressive Conservatives has been adopted in its entirety by David Peterson and the Liberal Party of Ontario, whose electoral victory in September l987 virtually knocked the Conservatives off the political map. Has anything changed? Not really. Here's why: Being a conservative Liberal like David Peterson is the same as being a liberal Conservative like Bill Davis. Both are really socialists in disguise. Bob Rae, on the other hand, isn't in disguise.
