Introduction [Top of Page] Current issues: The Abuja Peace Accords ended seven years of civil warfare in Liberia. More than 20,000 of the estimated 33,000 factional fighters gave up their arms to the Cease-Fire Monitoring Group of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOMOG). Free and open presidential and legislative elections were held 19 July 1997; former faction leader, Charles TAYLOR, and his National Patriotic Party won overwhelming victories. The years of civil strife coupled with the flight of most business people disrupted formal economic activity, but with peace restored and a popularly-elected government installed, the difficult task of rebuilding the social and economic structure of this war-torn country can proceed. Introduction [Top of Page] Current issues: On 25 May 1997, the democratically-elected government of President Ahmad Tejan KABBAH was overthrown by disgruntled army personnel under the command of Major Johnny Paul KOROMA; President KABBAH fled to exile in Guinea. The Economic Community of West African States Cease-Fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) forces, led by a strong Nigerian contingent, undertook the suppression of the rebellion. They were initially unsuccessful, but, by October 1997, they forced the rebels to agree to a cease-fire and to a plan to return the government to democratic control by 22 April 1998. However, the agreed demobilization of the combatants was not carried out by the rebel junta. On 5 February 1998, hostilities broke out in the outskirts of Freetown and ECOMOG mounted a major offensive, completely routing the rebels. President KABBAH returned to office on 10 March to face the task of restoring order to a demoralized population and a disorganized and severely damaged economy. Liberia's History
Joseph Jenkins Roberts (1809-1876), was a wealthy merchant who had emigrated in 1829 from Petersburg, Virginia. He became the first black ACS governor of Liberia in 1841. In 1848, he was elected the first president of an independent Liberia.
    J. J. Roberts, Liberia's first President, spent his first year as Liberia's leader attempting to attain recognition from European countries and the United States. England and France were the first countries to accept Liberian independence in 1848. In 1849, Portugal, Brazil, Sardinia, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Hamburg, Brenem, Lubeck, and Haiti all formally recognized Liberia. However, the United States withheld recognition until 1862, during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, because the U.S. leaders believed that the southern states would not accept a black ambassador in Washington D.C. Roberts was re-elected three more times to serve a total of eight years. During his leadership, the coastline was extended over 600 miles, and an institution of higher learning, later to become Liberia University, was established. By 1860, through treaties and purchases with local African leaders, Liberia had extended its boundaries to include a 600 mile coastline.

Liberian Political Geography Monrovia, city, Liberia Related Category: Liberian Political Geography Monrovia [m nr Pronunciation Key , city (1986 est. pop. 465,000), capital of the Republic of Liberia, NW Liberia, a port on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the St. Paul River. Monrovia is Liberia's largest city and its administrative, commercial, communications, and financial center. The city's economy revolves around its harbor, which was substantially improved by U.S. forces under lend-lease during World War II. In 1948 the first port capable of handling oceangoing vessels was opened; there are now several ports, including a free port. The main exports are latex and iron ore. The city also has extensive storage and ship repair facilities. Manufactures include cement, refined petroleum, food products, bricks and tiles, furniture, and pharmaceuticals. Roads and railroads and an airport connect Monrovia with Liberia's interior. The Univ. of Liberia (1862) and Cuttington College and Divinity School (1889; Episcopal) are in the city. Monrovia was founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a haven for freed slaves from the United States and the British West Indies and was named for James Monroe, then president of the United States. Life in Monrovia was severely disrupted in the 1990s by Liberia's civil war, which left thousands homeless and the city's economy in ruins.

Please be aware that WWW sites may occasionally be unavailable, may be reorganized, or may dissappear altogether. It is good practice to try the site at a different time before you assume it no longer exists. Also be aware that certain sites are graphically intensive, and may take awhile to view on your screen. Because of these limitations, certain exercises may be inappropriate for certain users and at certain times. Please let the site administrator know if you have consistent trouble with a site in these exercises. Exercise 1: One of the easiest ways to see how places are interrelated and interdependent is to examine how your home state or county is situated in terms of broader (national, global) issues. The Where You Live web site allows you to access environmental, economic, and political information about where you live. Go to the site, select your state (or a state you know something about or are interested in), and select the the "Campaign Contributions" link (under Politics ). Examine several of the elected officials and the nature of their campaign contributions. What is the ratio of in-state to out of state contributions? Why would out-of-state sources be interested in providing money to candidates? Look at the
