Welcome to the official web site of the Libertarian Party of Denton County Texas. This web site is dedicated to informing Libertarians and interested residents of Denton County about party activities, candidates and issues. Libertarians believe the answer to America's political problems is the same commitment to freedom that earned America its greatness: a free-market economy and the abundance and prosperity that it brings; a dedication to civil liberties and personal freedom that marks this country above all others; and a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America's founders. What began as a small group of activists in Colorado has become America's third largest political party. We are proud of our heritage and the progress we have made since 1971. Denton County Libertarians can be especially proud of the fact that we fielded candidates for all of the state house and state senate seats for Denton County in the 2002 election cycle. Without Libertarians, 5 of the 6 seats would have been unopposed. Libertarians also fielded candidates for US Congressional District 26, the US Senate, and all of the state-wide offices that appeared on Denton County ballots.

ACLU and Libertarian Party Ask Court to Correct
New Virginia Ballot Labeling Law
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, July 24, 2001
RICHMONDThe American Civil Liberties Union today filed a federal lawsuit challenging Virginia's new law governing political party labels on ballots as misleading and unfair. Under the law, major political party candidates will be labeled by party affiliation, whereas all other candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will be labeled "Independent." The lawsuit, filed by the ACLU of Virginia and the Southern Regional office of the national ACLU, asks the U.S. District Court to issue a preliminary injunction ordering the State Board of Elections to identify all qualified candidates on ballots by the name of their party. “In addition to favoring major political parties over smaller parties, this law is grossly misleading to voters,” said ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Kent Willis. “Members of the Libertarian, Green or Reform Parties are unequivocally not ‘Independents,’ and 'Independents’ are unequivocally not members of these parties.” “At the very time the nation is focused on election reform, Virginia seems to have taken a step backward,” he added.

DEFINITIONS AND HISTORICAL STATUS
OF POLITICAL PARTIES IN ALASKA
Updated February 24, 2002
DEFINITIONS
Limited Political Party:
AS 15.30.025 and 15.60.012(12) - A Limited Political Party is a political group which organizes for the purpose of selecting candidates for electors for President and Vice President of the United States. To qualify for this status, a Limited Political Party petition is submitted to the Division of Elections and must be signed by 2,878 registered voters to qualify for the presidential election in 2004. A Limited Political Party ceases to be recognized in the State of Alaska if its presidential candidate fails to receive at least 3% of the votes cast for President.
Recognized Political Party: AS 15.60.010(20) - A Recognized Political Party is an organized group of voters that represents a political program and either nominated a candidate for Governor who received at least three percent of the total votes cast for Governor at the preceding General Election or has registered voters equal to at least 3% of the votes cast for Governor in the last election. Until it qualifies as a political party under this definition, an independent political group may field candidates for statewide and district-wide offices only by filing nominating petitions as required by AS 15.25.140 - 15.25.205.

What is Libertarianism?
Libertarianism is a political philosphy. The term "libertarian" dates at least as far back as 1789, arising from the turbulence of both the American and French revolutions. There are probably as many "strict" definitions of the term as there are libertarians. But in general, libertarians combine the strong defense of individual civil liberties, due process, social tolerance (religous, lifestyle choices, etc.), open immigration, and nonconformity espoused by modern day "liberals" with an equally strong defense of free markets, private property, free trade, radically reduced government and international noninterventionism often espoused by conservatives. In the World's Smallest Political Quiz you can begin to see how this combination arises. The traditional left-right axis between liberal and conservative covers only part of the picture. Essentially both sides want government involved in a good deal of a priavte citizen's life, it's only a question of where. Liberals tend to favor government intervention and planning in economic matters, but leave social issues up to the individual. Conservatives tend to favor government direction of social issues, personal behavior, and "tough on crime" civil liberties intrusions, but leave economics to the private sector. Where does that leave people who want "free speech" AND "less taxes"? Or people who dislike both?
