The Kansas Libertarian Party was formed in the mid 70¹s shortly after the national Libertarian Party was formed in Colorado Springs, CO in December of 1972 by David Nolan, Carl Hess, and other mostly disgusted young Republicans (Carl Hess had written speeches for Barry Goldwater¹s 1964 presidential campaign). At this time, there was a group of what was known as ³objectivists² at Friends University in Wichita. Objectivism is a philosophy espoused by Ayn Rand, author of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, among others, Rand was the central figure in the objectivist movement that became widely endorsed by many. Some of the Friends University objectivists were inspired by the formation of the Libertarian Party and proposed that the group form a Kansas Libertarian Party. Some in the group wanted it to remain non-political.
