Prerequisite: Two years of high school math
This course introduces the elements of a laser, operation of a helium- neon gas laser, laser physics, optical-cavities, properties of laser light, and a survey of laser systems. Safety procedures concerning lasers and related equipment are presented in this course.
3 lecture hours, 3 laboratory hours. LFO-201 Photonics Materials 3 credits
Prerequisite: Introduction to Photonics and Photonic Safety (LFO-101)
Laser Materials is a course designed to provide the laser electro-optics technology and fiber optics technology students an up-to-date knowledge of the laser and laser peripheral materials. The material selection and characterization of different laser materials and peripheral materials, such as electro-optics, acousto-optic, and nonlinear materials, will be included in the course. In
the course the basis for material selection and suitability for laser application will be stressed. Laboratory experiments will supplement the basic non-mathematical theory. Practical applications will be stressed in this course.

Second and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) effects lead to a variety of useful applications in laser technologies and photonics. We are investigating NLO properties of many classes of potentially technologically useful materials such as organics (e.g. polymers), organometallics, inorganic glasses, metals, organic-inorganic hybrids, semiconductors, composites etc. Many of these materials and structures are being developed in collaboration with other Australian and overseas groups. Our experimental facilities allow us to investigate the NLO properties in a wide wavelength range and with femtosecond temporal resolution. 1b Spatial Squeezing

Ultimately, the quality of optical images and the sensitivity of optical scanning techniques is limited by quantum noise of the light. We have found a unique way of using the low noise, squeezed light generated in our laboratory to improve laser scanning, extending it from from 1 to 2 dimensions. The work is in progress with all the equipment in place. Additional projects are planned in microscopy using entangled photons. These experimental projects at the ANU provide opportunities for collaboration and travel to our collaborators in Paris and Boston. 1c Nonlinear Optics and Solitons

ready-made optics
Education-outreach programs aim to intrigue the young minds of photonics' future.
By Holly Andren
The formula for success in optics education may be in the presentation. People within the industry are developing programs, kits, and experiments designed to pull students of all ages into the world of optics. The following are a sampling of the ways the industry is reaching out to a younger population. Look for more in upcoming issues of oe magazine.
experiments in optics
The Laser LightLab Inc. Laser Optics Kit features a set of ready-to-use equipment that teaches the fundamentals of optical engineering. Gareth Williams, a physics professor at San Jose State University (San Jose, CA), developed the kit after running 21 nationwide teacher workshops for the National Science Foundation. "I was encouraged by the teachers to prepare and sell to them a ready-to-use set of equipment, but the cost of the HeNe lasers used at that time would have made it prohibitively expensive," Williams says. However, in 1998 he discovered that experiments run using the HeNe laser could be performed using diode lasers. The kit contains a diode laser, multimeter, lens, prism, filters, and more. Its components can be assembled to perform experiments in 18 different areas of optics ranging from laser surveying to diffraction. The main goal of the kit is to make physics more attractive to junior- and senior-level high-school students. "Optics should be given a more prominent position in the high-school curriculum," Williams says.

Please note:
The discussions in this section have been phrased so that both the novice and the expert can understand the principles involved. The novice will have to pay close attention so that a clear understanding comes through. The expert, however, must also pay close attention , even though much of what is taught is old hat, because we are accomplishing some very new things here. It's easy to slide over important points when reading too quickly. A missed point can even lead one to imagine that things that have been physically demonstrated in the lab, or are taught in texts that the reader may not be familiar with, are 'impossible'. We are presenting a step-by-step learning process for everyone on this road to the global conversion from electronics to photonics.
What is Photonic Computing?
Well, electronic computing uses electrons to perform the logic that makes computing work. Photonic computing uses photons of laser light to do the same job, only thousands of times faster. Electronic transistors are whittled into silicon wafers to make modern computer chips. Today's technology, however, is pushing the electron to its physical limits. As a result, the manufacturing processes are becoming increasingly expensive for producing even minor improvements. However, photons are manipulated using inexpensive computer-generated holograms made of plastic or glass. Photonic computers, therefore, will be far more valuable than their slower electronic counterparts, and far

Industries developing photonics and related technologies are experiencing expansive growthwith the market for laser sources for telecommunications alone expanding at the rate of $100-$200 million per year. These technologies will be impacting a wide range of applications, including medical and health care diagnosis and treatment, entertainment, information storage and computing, and the ever-expanding demand for higher speed and more bandwidth for telecommunications and computer services. The State of Washington has a growing number of companies pioneering these technologies, industries involved with image acquisition and display to optical storage and networks. Existing companies such as Boeing and Aculight will benefit from these technologies, as well as newer companies like Microvision, Lumera, and New Light Industries. Many of the technical challenges facing industry are forming the basis for research topics at the state's universitiesproviding an excellent opportunity for Washington State resources to have a pivotal impact on the continued growth of this industry. WTC created a Technology Initiative program five years ago for the purpose of supporting emerging technology research that is broadly applicable to Washington companies. WTC's first four-year Technology Initiative was in MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) technologies, built around a very successful annual workshop, 17 university projects seeded with WTC financial support, and WTC's Microfabrication Laboratory, which was upgraded through the Initiative.
