Sokal doesn t believe a word of it, but the editors of a prominent cultural studies journal do.

http://www.siu.edu/departments/english/acadareas/continental/
The Department of English at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale offers a PhD in English with emphasis on Continental Literature, Postcolonial Literature, and Literary Criticism and Theory as part of its doctoral program in modern literature. This emphasis requires a thorough study of English and American literature as well as further study of literature in translation, originating from Continental Europe, Postcolonial sources, and Literary Theory that has been written in or translated into English. This is a modification of the traditional comparative literature curriculum without the required advanced fluency and reading knowledge in at least two foreign languages. Two years of college instruction in two foreign languages with a B-or-better average is, however, required for any doctoral research at SIUC. The second foreign language requirement may be substituted by a defferent, approved research tool pertinent to the student’s field of interest. LAWYERS AND LITERATURE Four Warnings about Theory: " The way we read now partly depends upon our distance, inner or outer, from the universities, where reading is scarcely taught as a pleasure, in any of the deeper senses of the aesthetics of pleasure." [Harold Bloom, How to Read and Why 22 (New York: Scribner, 2000)] "I teach English in a distinguished university. In my distinguished department, which is like ll English departments I have known or heard about, we have virtually nothing in common, not even literature." [Frank Lentricchia, The Edge of Night: A Confession 11 (New York: Random House, 1994)] [Lentricchia teaches at Duke University, or so it is rumored.] "Since literature seemed to be about everything that there is about the human conditionI figured that a good literary critic would have to make himself expert at that big picture. It didn't take me long to realize that the professionalization of literary criticism has taken reductionism as its model, and that it too can lead to learning more and more about less and less until you're in danger of knowing everything there is to know about nothing." [Richard Powers, "The Last Generalist: An Interview with Richard Powers"]

Before You Buy Literary Criticism Literary theory and criticism is complicated. It can be your best friend, when used like a handy toolbox. Or it can be a nightmare, when slavishly applied to a novel, short story, or poem. Before you buy books about literary theory, read over some of my suggestions and you'll learn to love this essential part of any English class.
Learn the jargon
First of all, it's very important to get a grasp on the jargon that accompanies nearly all forms of literary criticism. You can't hope to write coherently about Derrida if you don't know what "deconstruction" means. In my opinion, there's one book that offers an excellent overview of literary jargon, and I suggest you buy it. It's called "A Glossary of Literary Terms," by M. H. Abrams ( compare prices ). Not only does the book offer definitions of literary terms, like "affective fallacy" and "stream of consciousness," but it reviews several of the most important literary theories, like deconstruction, new historicism, cultural studies, feminist criticism, etc. This is an excellent starting point for all students (including those preparing for the SAT or GRE).
