Country Info Lithuania Introduction Lithuania General Data Lithuania Maps Lithuania Culture ... Lithuania Time and Date Lithuania Culture Back to Top In spite of such modern influences as television and radio, Lithuanian folklore continues to hand down a rich and original heritage from generation to generation. Lithuanian songs and a remarkable collection of fairy tales, legends, proverbs, and aphorisms have their roots deep in a language and culture that are among the oldest in Europe. Lithuanian folk art is mainly embodied in ceramics, leatherwork, wood carving, and textiles; its colouring (which tends to avoid gaudiness) and its original geometric or floral patterns are characteristic features. Lithuanian culture is noted for its vibrant oral tradition, consisting of folktales, legends, proverbs, and dainos (ancient songs). The country’s national literature began with the long poem Metai (“The Seasons”), by Kristijonas Donelaitis, written in the 18th century and published posthumously in 1818. Contemporary Lithuanian writers include the playwright Kazys Saja and the poets Tomas Venclova and Judita Vaiciunaite. The Soviet regime forced Venclova to emigrate in the 1970s, and he moved to the United States. The Vilnius drawing school, founded in 1866, has had a strong influence on the nation's fine-arts traditions, and the composer and painter Mikalojus Ciurlionis (d. 1911) also had a considerable influence on contemporary forms. During the Soviet period, a realistic note was introduced into sculpture and painting, and Lithuanian drawing, noted for the use of natural colour and a highly refined technique, has won international acclaim. Architecture has been affected by a rich heritage in monuments and old buildings and by styles, ranging from the Gothic to the Neoclassical, that have acquired a distinctive local character.

Content: Legend The language The religion The  first Lithuanian book ... Land of Crosses Lithuania stretches along the Baltic Sea for 99 kilometers. Especially beautiful is the scenery of the 98 km long (of which 54 km belongs to Lithuania) and 380 meters to 4 km wide Courian Spit, which separates the Courian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The largest objects of interest of the Curonian Spit are their sand dunes.
The sea was never friendly for people. There was always a fight of nature forces. A century ago the large forests were cut down here. The relieved winds carried and poured the high hill-dune. These dunes travelled and moved to the Courian Lagoon and burried about 12 fishermen villages.   The nature of the Courian Spit is marvelous. There are places, where one sees only sand and sea, where from the eye turns. It is a true " Lithuanian Sahara ". The majestic dunes achieve in parts a height of 50 - 60 Metren. Content Legend
In ancient times there lived, on this Baltic Sea beach, a beautiful virgin, the giantess Neringa. She had a good heart. She rescued the fishing boats from a storm, helping them reach the shore. She wasn’t always successful; many boats sank and fishermen drowned. There Neringa decided to help mankind by splitting up a part of the sea, where the Nemunas River empties into it. She brought entire dunes into her apron and heaped up an enormous wall.

History
The rich culture of Lithuania goes back thousands of years. Lithuanians are a branch of the Balts whose settlement dates back to around 200 B.C. Lithuanian is one of the oldest languages in Europe. The first written mention of Lithuania was in the Annales Quedlinburgenses in 1009 A.D. The first Lithuanian state was established by the Grand Duke Mindaugas in 1230. He converted to Christianity briefly and was crowned king of Lithuania in 1252. The Grand Duke Gediminas, who reigned from 1316 to 1341, is credited with founding Vilnius at the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers - and a dynasty that united Lithuania and Poland from 1386 until 1795. Lithuania reached its height under the Grand Duke Vytautas the Great, who ruled from 1392 to 1430. He strengthened the foundations for Europeanized and Catholic state. Driving back the Turks, he extended the grand duchy almost to the Black Sea. Map of LITHUANIA (14th - 15th century) In 1410, Vytautas and his cousin Jogaila decisively beat the German crusaders of the Teutonic Order in the great battle of Tannenberg. He celebrated his victory in his magnificent red-brick castle on an island at Trakai.
Lithuania progressively entered European culture. At the Union of Lublin in 1569, the Polish-Lithuanian kingdom was formally marged into a commonwealth headed by a monarch. In 1579, the region's oldest university, Vilnius University, was established by the Jesuits. It was one of the most important centers of the Counter-Reformation. The country now has six universities, academies and research institutes.

By the 12th century the Balt peoples were split into tribal groups, all practising nature religions. The two main groups in Lithuania were the Samogitians in the west and the Aukstaitiai in the east. In what is now south-west Lithuania and in neighbouring parts of Poland were the Yotvingians, also a Balt people, later to be assimilated by the Lithuanians and Poles. Title page. Vilnius, 1890. Pavel Kukolnik The painter Ivan Trutnev was the head of an art school and trained a pleiad of famous artists. Literature occupies a special place. It was created by people of different aesthetic orientations, religious backgrounds, and ethnic origins: Pavel Kukolnik who was of Austrian ancestry, Vasily von Rotkirch, who was descended from a line of German knights, Aleksander Navrotsky , who was born in St. Petersburg, and Aleksander Zhirkevich, who was an heir to nobles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Diverse in genre and theme, fables, tragedies and dramas, poems, novellas and short stories, sketches and memoirs make up a rich library. Between the world wars important contributions were made to the cultural development of Lithuania by the artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, the opera singer and director Teofan Pavlovsky, the writer and journalist Arkady Bukhov, the culture historian and philosopher Lev Karsavin, and the historian Ivan Lappo. Also noteworthy in the Russian literary life of Vilnius were such celebrities as Vyacheslav Bogdanovich and Dorofei Bokhan as well as the poets Vasily Selivanov and Konstantin Olenin.
