Vilnius Karaim kenes a, 1998 (House of Prayer) Trakai T his exhibit tells about the history, cultural heritage, and current problems of the Karaims, who are the smallest ethnic group in Lithuania. The characteristics of this Oriental culture and its relationship with its Lithuanian environment are revealed through the photographs, texts, and graphics as well as audio video recordings presented here. According to the ethnostatistical data collected in 1997, there are 257 Karaims living in Lithuania. Their social activity is directed, first and foremost, toward the preservation of their distinctive culture, language, customs, and religion. 600th anniversary of the Karaims in Lithuania D uring the 600 years that they have lived in Lithuania, this small Turkic people have preserved a strong national consciousness. A rather inward-looking community life, firm moral principles based on the teachings of the Karaim religion, and steadfast adherence to tradition - all these things have contributed to the survival of the people, of their basic characteristics, such as language, customs, and rituals, and thus, of their national identity. What also helped the Karaims of Lithuania survive under difficult conditions was the tolerance and respect for them expressed during all those centuries not only in the everyday contacts between people but also in the official state documents of various periods.

Traditional Culture in Modern Lithuania The traditional clothing of each region is woven and worn in a particular way and has a specific pattern, color and style of tailoring. Photo by Henrikas Sakalauskas For many people, traditional song, national dress, calendar celebrations, and wedding and christening rituals are an important part of their personal lives. The Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 increased nationalistic feeling in Lithuania This resulted in the collecting of authentic Lithuanian songs, folk tales, dances and instrumental music. Young people resisted the stylized folk culture promoted by the state and started to take an active interest in traditional culture. They traveled around the country collecting folk objects and instruments. Folklore ensembles began springing up. The best folk artists from rural areas were invited to perform in cities during special celebrations. There were also frequent television programs about folk artists. Today there are hundreds of folk ensembles in Lithuania, based in workplaces, schools and villages. People are also experimenting with using traditional folklore as a component of jazz, rock, and pop music. Catholic holidays like Easter and Shrovetide had been suppressed during the Soviet occupation but have begun to be celebrated again. Other traditions connected with weddings and the harvest are also being revived now.

Our two countries have no common border, but we are neighbours, nevertheless. Culturally speaking, I would say we are close neighbours. Therefore, it is a great pleasure to receive you here today. I am a warm admirer of Lithuania and have visited your country twice, as artistic director of Nationaltheatret of Norway. Your visit here is therefore a very special occasion to me as Minister of culture of this country. And our meeting this morning proved that we as Ministers with artistic background have a lot in common. Through the theatre, I have had rich contact with Lithuania. As I see it, you have some of the best theatre directors of the world. Necrocius is special! The first time I visited Vilnius was just before Christmas in 1990, the year before your country regained its freedom. I will never forget the sightseeing together with colleagues from the Youth Theatre – to the old churches that had been closed for many, many years. This was the first Christmas people were allowed to celebrate in the church.
